View Full Version : "The Netipot" episode won't play in Miro (.mp4, should be .mov)
I use Miro to grab the HD Quicktime version, and the last mini episode wouldn't play properly, presumably because it had a .mp4 extension instead of the usual .mov extension. I had to open it in VLC to play it, which isn't a big deal by any stretch of the imagination, but was a bit annoying. I'm not sure if the change was intentional or not, but I thought you guys should know because I don't see a post for it anywhere here.

That sounds very weird! I had no problem playing it. And if you were able to play it in VLC it should play in Miro too, since it uses an embedded version of VLC.

yeah i had the same problem so i just went to the site and watched it online.
last week we were doing some wider-spread testing of some new codecs and fomats. While we will eventually be moving to an mp4 container for our h264 material, that hasn't been fully deployed- expect .mov for HD for at least a little bit longer.

Just keep in mind that it doesn't play well with Miro, at least not at this point. There's a lot of us out there that use Miro to get your shows. It doesn't really make much sense that it won't play mp4 files, especially when VLC is cool with them. I'd always though they had the same backend. Maybe it has something to do with how you encode them.
I also noticed you guys have some sort of deal going with Miro with a co-branded player, I don't think it would be very good for either of you if your programs wouldn't actually play properly in your branded player.
i think the miro issue is because we currently use the .m4v extension for mp4s. this was to make itunes associations "just work". Technically, m4v and mp4 are exactly the same file- once we start releasing with mp4, miro *should* "just work" as well. I'll make sure miro support works when we go that direction.
