I was walking downtown today when I came across an elderly lady with purple hair and i thought ... why?
I have seen old ladies with purple hair here in Japan and back home in the UK (usually with a grumpy face), but why do they do it ... a last act of rebellion? A dye accident? Its completely stumped me!

Answers or more ponderings welcome.

Well let me say this, I have 2 experiences that relate to this. I saw a older woman with pink kinda fade or something in her hair. She must have been 50+ or so. Anyway she was in front of me at a gas station and you could just see the contempt in the lady at the counter, she was giving this poor old lady the stink eye and looking at her hair and it was obvious what the problem was. Lady actually looked kinda cute, i mean so what if as 50+ lady wants to dress up like that and color her hair. Good for you for being different. But ill never forget the disdain that lady had for at the counter.

Second story was this older guy that shaved his head in a mohawk and dyed it green. While not as cute as the old lady, he got crap from the lady at the counter who told him " your too old to do that to your hair.

Ok wait a second, too old to be different and unique and stand out? F that man, go for it. Those people need to be admired not scowled at. This is what institutionalized minds like to do to free thinkers, try to cage them up like they are cause its all they know.

Anyway, if i was you i would go dye my hair and see how it feel if you wanna know. It takes real balls to break the norm and do something like that. If anything i would just be like " i like your hair " just to boos their ego. When you hang it out and know your against the grain, having a complete stranger compliment you for what your doing will not only make your day, but you just might remember it for a long time.

My thoughts on it.

Its called a "rinse". Typical for old ladies that don't want to admit that they are grey. My grandmother did it for many, many years (a purple colour). She stopped after she commented on how ridiculous a punk guy looked on TV with his bright blue mohawk. We pointed out that she was only a razor away from the same look :)

Yeah, like above said, its to hide the grey, but I don't understand why they don't use normal haircolors instead of primarily blues.

Why can't an old lady have her hair in whatever shade she wants. It's not like you're gonna think she's hot anyway.

There are stranger things in the world.

Old women are taught to fade into the background, like ninjas. Unfortunately the training grounds are forests with trees which have purple leaves and trunks the colour of tartan coats. These trees often have little trollies leaning against them.

I don't think Moonie was condemning the phenomenon, I believe he was trying to start a thread that tapped into interesting queries.
I think it's a great question. I mean a lady goes her whole life as a brunette, and then once she starts going grey, the logical next hair color is...violet #44 ?!
An unusual choice, but by no means wrong.
Plus, I think a gramma with blue hair is totally hot! LOL

I have seen a poodle dog dyed pink, and that to me is not right. Why would anyone do that to their animal?

I had very short purple spikey hair for a while a few years ago, I miss it. :(

Stupid real jobs.

Anyway, it could be a rinse to hide grey or maybe just an awesome grandma! I would love to see more people of any age experimenting with hair colours.

I swear I had more old ladies tell me how beautiful my hair looked when it was purple than anyone else. :)

Hmm...old ladies must be entranced by purple...someone should do a study.

Yeah, like above said, its to hide the grey, but I don't understand why they don't use normal haircolors instead of primarily blues.

First, who cares what color they want to dye their hair? Being "rebellious" just wasn't acceptable when these ladies were young. Beyond being not acceptable, your life could be ruined. Social standards were different and a "ruined woman" might not be able to marry or have an normal adult life for being rebellious when younger. So let them have their fun now. Why do young people today dye THEIR hair bright colors? For fun and because it can. It hurts no one.

Second, I've been dying the gray out of my hair for about eight years now (yeah, seriously). Gray hair takes regular dye very poorly, and the hair goes back to a gray or shiny silver within a few weeks. Cody's been here about six weeks and has already had to do my hair for me twice (yup, he's that awesome). Due to expensive conditioner, my hair's healthy, but silver is a pain in the ass.

You`re correct, I wasn`t condemning it, I was just trying to understand it. It wasn`t a serious question, by all means, dye your hair what ever colour you want. It seems like a strange colour to choose when you are an elderly old lady and its always purple, never green never blue.
(do the cuffs match ? ... )

Dying hair non-natural colors has never been as widespread acceptance among younger people until recently. So to me its a young trend, so these women are just trying to seem younger.

To me this kinda fails, they are not being honest with themselves

No one thinks they are younger. They are just enjoying life. Being old doesn't mean having to wear diapers and mumus. They are fully aware of their age when their joints hurt and they're applying denture cream. They're not dead yet, so let them have fun.

Blue/purple hair in the older set is rarely a colour choice, but more likely an oversight. As mentioned before, it's a rinse used...moreso in years gone by. That's why there used to be comments about 'blue haired old ladies'.

Edit: A google search brought this up: Answers.com (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080106223237AA4ieMM)

Let's not forget some people have had their skin turn blue due to messing with forms of silver to prevent/cure ailments.
