I have a windows vista pre. desktop, and about two weeks ago I started having problems with WMP11. WMP11 will not play avi files. Two weeks ago they played fine. I did some research and found I'm not the only one having this problem with Vista. I have downloaded codec after codec but still no solution. It would be great if you guys at Techzilla could explore this problem on one of your shows to shed some light on this situation. Thanks, and love the show

Re-install your video driver?

Yeah, reinstalling the video driver possibly. Also, have you tried playing an avi with any other player?

I would test this to see if the issue is with wmp11 or another issue on the computer? If it plays in like the divx player then you just have an issue with wmp11.
Also go to the control panel and select default programs or just start then default programs. Select "set your default programs" then just select wmp11 and again select choose defaults for this program. Lots of selecting. Now see if avi is checked.
Also, I recommend downloading the vista codec package for Vista. Its nice to just have one program open all my video files even if its wmp11 playing them.

I would just propose the K-Lite Codec pack.

or
the Combined Community Codec Pack

yea, try another video player to make sure it's not just wmp 11. Also, I highly recommend the vista codec pack, especially over the k-Lite or cccp packs.

My avi files will play on my vlc player, but I still want to the root of the reason this happened in the first place. This problem affects downloading vids. on my mp3 player, and also importing video files to make dvds. It's just a big pain in the ass. Vista is ok as long as you work within the vista ecosystem. Go beyond that ecosystem and your screwed.

Actually, sounds more like an issue with your codecs. VLC uses it's own internal codecs. Any that you installed on your machine will have no effect on VLC's playing ability. Also, it should be noted that MOST codecs won't completely uninstall. Your issue might have been caused by an older codec that you thought was uninstalled but hadn't completely. I once had to do a fresh install of XP way back when because of uninstalled codecs screwing stuff up.

I'm going to play devil's advocate by mentioning something that hasn't been mentioned...
They did change the encoding method, there has already been complaints about this about their HD feed and several others.. you might want to let them know about it. Though like others said, you'll probably have to use a workaround (like using VLC) or install a codec pack
