View Full Version : Viewer Input

Hi, Glenn here from Revision3.
The following is a thread I'd like to get some feedback from all of you on.
First, thanks for posting in the forums and letting us know your thoughts, we really appreciate the feedback.
In response to this feedback you've provided, we'd like to try out something a little different in the Gazette - letting you the viewers, decide what we cover and how we cover it.
To start off, I'll post a thread inquiring about topics you'd like to see covered. Everyone can post their input and then we'll choose a topic, based on the number of requests as well as what is feasible for us, slash me.
Next, I'll post another thread inquiring about what you specifically want to know about the chosen subject matter.
Again, everyone posts their input (specific questions) and then I'll cover the topic, asking the questions that you, the viewer, wants to know.
Simple.
Basically, the concept is, you, the viewers become the producers - kind of a 'by the people, for the people' sort of segment, in a way. Not only is this good for you, because you get to ask the questions you want to ask and learn what you want to learn, but we get to do less work - well, hopefully, we'll see.
So again, you produce - you make the calls.
Since we're not sure on how well something like this will go over, we're going to start slowly with content that can be covered internally at Revision3 - like what some people have been asking for. Then, maybe we can move to topics outside of Revision3, such as what happens internally at other companies - getting to know them. In this instance, it would be nice to have it not be your typical interview about what the company is currently doing but be more of a historical perspective on the company - like, where it started, who was involved, funny stories of what went into it to make it happen, how that company functions, who works there, what do they do exactly, why, how'd they gut funding and on and on and on.
However, again, this is all up to you since you'll be coming up with the content and the questions. If this does well, the content options are basically limitless. We can also add elements like - instead of me asking questions from behind the camera (you don't want me in front of the camera - just watch this last episode), maybe you can send in to me a webcam clip of you asking the question, and i'll put that up instead.
It'll be your job to make this show successful, so anything creative like that you can suggest, the better.
To start, I have read through the forums and have compiled a small list of some sample topics that you have already suggested.
For example:
- Brianatlarge - Ooh, and the server... You showed us a little bit of the server but we didn't get any specs! - In response to this: Jeff Rizzo, our CTO, would be happy to show you where our webservers and database machines come from.
- TheHumanEclipse - Could we possibly see a behind the scenes taping of an episode (for any show, it doesn’t necessarily have to be the Gazette)? Possibly see what goes on from concept to completion?
- dugahol wants to see the world of Rev 3 during that week - whatever that is?
- mrfluff thinks that we should make a show about the production side of Revision3. stuff like editing tips explaining the equipment in greater detail.
- jonspence would love to see more of the technical stuff, like wave form monitors and vectorscopes and stuff.
- Dotsona asks: PLEASE! do a behind the scenes of diggnation, I beg you! - (this last request will happen sooner than you think, like in the next episode).
- gmn314 - It would be cool if you could dedicate an issue of The Gazette to giving us a look at the Digg offices! It would be cool to see what the employees do behind the scenes of Digg, and perhaps how Kevin spends his day? Also, if you could interview some of the top Diggers...that'd be great! It would be cool to meet the people from both sides of Digg!!
These are all great suggestions. The last one, on Digg, would be a great place to start once we gain interest and momentum and can cover topics outside of Revision3.
Also - keep in mind, this currently has very few people that can help out on this at Revision3, so the more you can help out, the better chance it has of happening.
Other options that come to mind for me would be:
- an update on the audio in the studio (we're working on it! DR has it under control - you'll see).
- producing - we can talk with producers here at revision3 and you can learn how to produce - research, etc - so your questions then become more involved and thought out.
- audio episode - different mics, mic placement
- camera work
- lighting episode
- photography
- video production, etc
- behind scenes of shows:
- ex: new show releases
- ex: Diggnation, Tekzilla, Webdrifter, Internet Superstar, GigaOm, etc
- and on and on.
So, if this style of format does well and you are getting into it and like watching it, then we can vamp it up a bit and tackle more.
Anyway, let me know what you think of this as a direction for the Gazette - if you like it or not - and then we'll make the next move from there.
We're looking forward to hearing your input! Err, I am anyway.
Thanks!
Glenn

First off, I think we all appreciate you starting this and trying to make the Gazette into another great Rev3 show!
Pretty much everything that's listed in your post is something I would enjoy seeing on the Gazette. That being said, I would love to see episode production from start to finish (planning, filming, editing ect). An episode of Tekzilla (or TRS if you want to head down to LA) would be perfect for this. I would also like a 'day in the life' episode with someone at Rev3 the people know (Jay, Jim, Patrick, Marty, you or Prager)

Thanks, Glen, for listening to us and giving us a chance to be heard.
One thing I'd like to see in the gazette would be a documentary-style gazette that chronicles Rev3 from the early beginnings up until it's current state, complete with clips that hit the editing room floor and bloopers, if possible.
Once again, thanks for hearing us, and I look forward to seeing the new and improved Gazette.

Wow, some of you guys have some really great interesting ideas. My only concern is that some of these things look like they would be shows that could last hours, and some only minutes. Is there a length restraint of only 20, 40 minutes?

I have been hoping for a long time that Sarah does a revisit to the homes of Rev 3 employees (and digg if in the san fran area) like pat or Kevin and a few others that appear on the tech shows to see what their digital diggs are like what computers and gadgets they own and stuff and talk a little about it much like the old TSS segment she did digital diggs.

Being a developer/design/cinematographer I too understand how nerve wreaking being in front of the camera is. But good job bro,..I've tried that same thing with trying to explain RSS/XML and how it is useful to normal people (geezzz.,..I sounds like a dlido)
But,..anyways....You rock dood,..and thanx for making this show rock.

I think sometimes a 2nd camera to some of the shows that show other angles of the show, and the people in the show can comment on themselves. Like DVDs I guess...commetary.. people seem to like that. anything behind the scenes is always good, and BLOOPERS! A good blooper reel would great every now and then...

Would definitely love to see behind the scenes of the Rev3 shows like Diggnation, TRS etc.
This might be kind of ambitious but I would love to see a special show or even mini-documentary with various ZDtv/TechTV alum talking about the rise and fall of the network which then ultimately led to the rise of internet television.

Some behind the scenes stuff on Digg would be cool, although it does not fall under Rev3. Diggnation does of course! But it was mentioned that they could take the Gazette beyond just internal components of Rev3. Which I think could be worthwhile as well. Other than this I would be interested in pretty much all of the previously stated ideas in the thread.

It'll be awesome once they start going Behind the Scenes of other companies! Like Web Drifter goes "behind the website", the Gazette could go behind the company to film how a certain company works.

I am starting to believe that after the 3-4 "behind the scenes" that get done they will really run out of content. So going to other places and seeing how they run (like Jim did this last episode) will become a great idea going forward.
I can actually see an interesting "Dirty Jobs-esque" future for the gazette going "behind the tech-scenes" at Blizzard, or South Park, or even Pownce.

Equipment and Editing programs used. You guys shoot in HD and edit HD. I would expect for some sweet stuff! As a amateur editor, I would love to see how the pros do it on their rig!
Things I'd like to see:
- Editing and Production (I still want a Bert Monroy style show for editing/effects)
- History of Rev3
- Host/Techie profiles. "Hi I'm Patrick Norton, I worked for..."
- Demystification of the productivity of rev3. Show us some of the major (and being a video editor, I know they happen) mistakes that have happened. I realize the point behind video production is to hide mistakes and problems, but it's always nice to see the reality behind so many shows being put together.
- I'd love to see a non-confidential board meeting at revision3. I'm sure it's boring, but I'm just interested to see how decisions are made.
Also, Glen is adorable and should be forced on camera more often.

I love the variety of the gazette and how one show differs from the next.
I would really like to see what goes behind filming a show like Tekzilla or Gigaom inside the new studio, camera work and all.
An episode that would recap revision3 history, where it came from, who was behind the idea, how you finance and go to where you guys are now. Might coincide with some anniversary.
If you guys run out of ideas for shows you could do a kind of "A day in the life of..." I remember there was one were we followed Sarah, I'd like to get stuff like that about Jim, Patrick and Alex for example.
Keep the gazette coming, I guess it would be hard to sponsor but I always has to do with viewing numbers...

I would personally like to learn more about the people at revision3. We have seen most of the people in the gazette before, but I'd like to see a real detailed look at everyone and there past. Maybe some funny stories from there past. College stories... Basically a professional up close and personal interview with everyone at rev3. Not just a minute or two of talking with them.

I like the direction the show is going, but I don't like the current lack of Sarah Lane. I think her sense of humor adds an entertainment quality and would keep the show from being super technical. Maybe intersperse her perspective on the more social and personal aspects of working at Revision3 with the technical nuts and bolts stuff. I think it would give the show balance and be accessible to more people.

Glenn,
Ok, so let's say that you do an epi that has Rev3 staff in it. Regardless of the focus of the show, when Rev3 staff appear, do cut-aways to their personal MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, etc. pages and make fun of it during editing.
I'm basically saying to interject some random personal crap about each person appearing in the segment. It can even be a picture of their mother or pet. I'm talking about anything that will catch our attention and raise an eye brow.
This is easy stuff that can be added after a simple google search. And say just that in the commentary.... "Hey...look at what Google know about Jim Louderback or his mom."
Funny stuff Brother, I'm telling you!

I would be interested in an episode along the lines of... "What it takes to work at Revision 3".
-Talk to Jim, let him talk about what he does for the company, who makes the hiring decisions and the direction you guys are looking to take things.
-Talk to a few key people(Sarah, for example), detailing their tasks and what they're looking to improve on in the future, ways they're looking to expand.
Just general stuff like that. As a broadcasting student myself, I have an internship right now producing content for the web in a big organization and I really think Revision 3 has a great chance to really capture an entire generation of "broadcasters". So, show us what it takes!

I have to say, the behind the scenes with Glenn in StL was awesome. The Sarah and Marty show would make a good sitcom, but I think Glenn's eternal search for respect as he mans the front lines of Revision3 is one of the funniest things I've seen on the network.
Sure, seeing the tech and the toys is really cool, but getting to see the people in their element is just as cool. When Sarah ambushed folks for the Gazette, she seemed to get a cold reception (Except from Martin and Jay, who apparently live to ham it up). Perhaps Glenn's more "earthy" disposition makes people open up to him, who knows. I vote for more Glenn episodes.
Everybody has a story, and with Revision3's growing staff, I bet there are some interesting ones. Unravel the mystery a bit. Keep knocking down that fourth wall.
Keep up the good work!:D
i would like to see the type of software you use from filming to distrubuting it.

Any host change that excludes Sarah Lane. She was the reason I started taping TSS, that way I could forward through anytime she opened her mouth. Sorry guys, but I really dislike high maintenance woman trying to fake being into tech - I simple don't have enough testosterone to look past her whining voice. Jessica Corbin at least sounds like she knows whats up, and is much lower maintenance yet stills knows her fashion. If I wanted to watch stupid women prattle on, I'd watch the oxygen channel.
Other than that: I personally would like to see more idiot's guide to basics. I am not exactly a geek, more like a nurse, and some of the skill sets required are a little advanced for me. I like to watch Patrick, any car guy that can also talk computers, well, I'll watch. But, like trying to install freePOPs... I could not follow the young lady, and the install instructions from the website go over my head, quickly. I can't shell script and I'm running windows (need for gaming and ISP required).

Maybe I'm slightly stupid, but are the weekly download numbers ever publicly posted on the Revision3 site? If not my input is I would like to see some raw data and stats from the business side of Revision3. Actually why stop their, how about pownce and digg as well. O yeah one more bit of input. I hate how the spell check always underlines; digg, diggnation, GigaOM, Pownce, etc. Same goes for digg.com. It's no big deal, just a minor annoyance.
edit: The forum needs more banner ads like the "meet Christian singles" one. Hilarious! Maybe you would've found someone if you moved beyond the superficial!
edit2: I just looked at the Christian singles banner ad again, It says Christians join for free... is that legal? (reverse discrimination?)

to echo and refine a bit of all these suggestions for behind the scenes content, i think it would be great to do 'a-day-in-the-life' themed episodes for each show and even a few personnel.
without sounding a bit 'big-brother-ish', its intention or purpose would be to satisfy much curiousity by geeks who are interested in understanding the tech-media industry and its surrounding culture.
a camera would shadow a show host or staff member for a day to see what they do and the perspective of their particular job duties.
i've always been curious as to when and why on certain Gazzette episodes, you see show hosts sitting in cubicles instead of in labs or other areas. it would help get a typical idea as to see what they do behind a cubicle desk, what part is in the field (so-to-speak) or in 'labs', and what parts are studio-based in preparation and post-show wrap ups.
in other words, how much time they spend in each phase of show development. a work breakdown structure(wbs) of this 'process' would help too (from the visual perspective of project management).
also, crossovers would be cool -when do they have the time to visit other shows like twit, dl.tv, or drop-in to other revision3 shows? (sometimes you see certain people, like veronica belmont from mahalo or 1up folks, pop into 3 or 4 various shows in one week.) when do they have the time to do this?
it would also be interesting to see what the production assistants do -as i assume their work duties vary day-to-day as well.
this post pretty much sums up what i'd like to see in behind-the-scenes episodes as my curiousity extends from the technology to the process of how things work to give the final product -the show.
keep up the great work all you guys over there!
regards,
j.

Hey, I was mentioned in an episode of the Gazette by Glenn, dude, I’m famous, (LOL).
Anyway, I would like to see an episode that gives advice to anyone wanting to start their own video website. (Not that I am, I'm just curious).
For example, contact Morgan Webb at Webb Alert, or Veronica Belmont from Mahalo Daily, and ask them how they got their websites up and running.
It’s similar to something I’ve posted before about an episode of an R3 show from concept to completion, but this time, its about a website.
- How did they get such great graphics for their opening?
- Who did their music?
- How did they get sponsors and advertisers?
- (I know you’re not really supposed to ask people about money, but) Do they make a lot of money from their sponsors and advertisers?
- How did they get their videos on iTunes, Miro and etc?
- What about the legal issues of their content? Is there any?
You see what I’m getting at? If someone was planning to put together a website, specifically one like Webb Alert or Mahalo Daily, with news style content, how would they go about doing everything Mahalo Dialy and Webb Alert does?

Glenn, don't know if this has been said yet but what about a video chat room while one of the shows is filming? Then the hosts can jump into the chat room during some down time (like when Jessica and Sarah are tapping their fingers at the end of popSiren) and talk directly with the fans. All we would need is a schedule for a possible chat room sighting and we would be set.
Its a very powerful tool to get the hosts in front of the fans, but you know this through Diggnation. I know you tried through Yahoo Live, but maybe there are others.

Hey, I have a suggestion that I really, really, really would like to see on a future Gazette episode.. I have noticed lately that there are a lot of people around rev3 hq and I have no idea who they are. Sure we know you Glenn, and the Pregginator, and ofcourse Jim, and all the hosts of the shows... But I've been seeing a bunch of new faces, and know nothing about these people.... Please do an episode where you introduce all of these new staff members and what there contribution to revision3 is...
Just a few months ago Rev3 seemed like such a small "family operated" business so to speak. But now it seems so big and strange to me.. Please help me get to know everyone that's new on your team (say hired in past 4-5 months) Please help me refamiliarize myself with the rev3 staff.

so yeah, well, i haven't been on top of this nearly as much as i had anticipated. first off, well, this is like, my third post. pretty lame. 2nd off, well, i've been keeping track of what everyone has been saying in the forums. i really want to integrate what everyone has been requesting and will hopefully do so soon - we'll see how well the intern performes. anyway, glad you've been enjoying some of the latest episodes - pretty hard to go wrong when you've got people like Grace getting people like D Rando fun stuff to play with as well as, well, the whole PopSiren crew as well as, Jay and Marty, the ad staff folk, Seamus, the list just goes on and on - so yeah, would be cool to break out of the Rev3 "behind the scenes" realm soon, but still, tis a good time getting the internal stuff - lots going on. Anyway, thanks for watching and giving the input, you people are what make networks like this (ok, what's like this) thrive and grow!
Thanks - and integrating your input soon.

I'd really love to see an interview with Eden Soto on working on stuff for Rev3, the programs he uses, his animation rig, etc.
Another person would be Lawrence Scaduto, but he's in NY...
Ah yes, Eden and Lawrenace... the unsung heroes. Their work is awesome.

This has basically been said, but I'd be really interested to see a start to finish BTS of TRS. Like from planning, to execution, to editing, to release.
I would love to see an interview with Rev3's newest on screen addition, Ms. Veronica Belmont

Is it possible to set up a high definition feed of the show on iTunes?

Well for one, get rid of Martin Sgt! But seriously, he has really poor acting on his shows and when he speaks it seems too fake.

First off, thank you so much for even starting the Gazette, I love the podcast. That said, I'm pretty much up for anything you guys put out. I'd love to see 'behind-the-scenes' of various Rev3 shows as well as an in-depth look at the technical bit that goes into actually making the show into something that we can watch as a podcast.

I agree with Tiki. Some behind the scenes stuff with Veronica would be cool.

I think a great episode of the gazette would be all about the interns. The interns could just walk around the office for a day with a camera in hand and show us what they guys are doing. Even filming outside of Rev3 when you go on lunch.
I think that would be awesome and simple.

I love the Gazette too and its behind the scenes themes. I also understand why its hard for the crew over at Revision3 to crank them out compared to the other main content of the Network the Tekzilla and the like.
What I would propose is since the Revision3 now has a Revision3beta network that those shows perhaps try to do a Gazette. One of the positive things about the Revision3 network of shows is its connection to the viewers. There is less of a iron curtain between the people who make the shows and the people who enjoy watching. Having the "beta shows" try to produce some sort of behind the scenes stuff might be a another good project to test the newly minted entertainment producers dynamic content creation abilities.
Not all beta shows might have immense behind the scenes content to make available but maybe there would be enough to produce two or three Gazettes with several shows content in them.
The hosts, creators, producers could do a short FAQ to the camera at least. Maybe describe their show concept/inspiration to the camera. While a show should speak for itself if executed clearly its always interesting to hear what the creator wanted the show to promote, describe, provide, and entertain.
Just a thought, yall keep working hard there in San Francisco cause I got rid of my TV and Cable service several months ago because of content like Revision3, Hulu.com, and Netflix Streaming.
Revision3 media for me!
