Hi,
As you may guess, I am not American and American Football is something I have always wanted to get into and I loved Playmakers when that was back on in 2003, but that was hardly about football and it was a shame that it got cancelled.
However Friday Night Lights has made me a fan...I had a week off work and I think I went all the way through seasons 1 and most of 2. This has to be one of the best shows around (to be fair I think it was the only show on during the writers strike)....please go check it out.
Lets just hope it doesnt get cancelled like playmakers (Well I think the NFL had the biggest part in getting that show cancelled)...why dont Americans like football shows dammit :(

because it is pretty much total bs. i was a high school football player in a small southern town and that show pretty much gets every thing wrong.
people who really know high school ball don't like it cause it's so unreal and then on the other hand there isn't enough interest from people like yourself who is clueless about football.
oh btw the NFL isn't that powerful. playmakers was cancelled for pretty much the same reason.
go dawgs.

I too would like to recommend Friday Night Lights. Season 1 more so than Season 2 (not as much football in season 2). If you have about 40min to spare, check out the 1st episode at hulu or openhulu.

They suck and are usually full of shit.
And I really hated Playmakers as it was too much like that horrible movie Any Given sunday.
I am a big Football fan and these shows are like lets strip any realism about the game inject BS ..I remember Kieth Bulluck a OLB of the Titans was so sickened by these shows he took a video camera and did a justin TV thing for a couple days to see the day in the life of real football from the locker room to home life and such....they are just people like anyone.
And the NFL had nothing to do with Playmakers being canceled that is just tin foil hat conspiracy BS.
And While the book friday night lights was great the show is crap and the motion sickness moving camera makes it worse.

I really like the show. And I liked Playmakers pretty well. I heard it got cancelled b/c the NFL said it didn't portray them well. If that's true, it's a silly reason. It's just a show. Anyways, I'm a big football fan and consider myself pretty well educated in the sport. I don't watch these shows b/c I want to know how it really is to play in the NFL or on a small town HS team. I watch them b/c it's entertaining for me. I actually like them to be a little over the top, like Any Given Sunday. I see the real hits and whatnot every Sat. and Sun. in the real games.

FNL is one of the best shows on TV--but I'm pretty sure it's doomed.

I remember hearing about the hype and was put off at the idea of a show trying to sympathize the people in high school that I never really had a connection with and always thought of as shallow, but I ultimately gave it a shot and bought it hook, line and sinker.I loved the first season of FNL, the second delved more in to a sort of soapy kind of territory (the Landry ordeal, which I think was solved in the best possible scenario without making it too out there), but I think it got back on track towards the end. However if that was indeed the last of the show, then it left much to be desired.
I'm not sure about the "realism" of the show, and honestly, I don't think it should be a big concern. The show goes beyond football to depict the lives of the players and community in a very much fictionalized and dramatized version of life - this is TV after all.
