View Full Version : Spun out in my car!

The two scariest moments ever of driving for me both occured in the last week. Last Saturday, while heading through the Caldecott going to San Francisco (the Caldecott is this tunnel that would be pitch dark if not for the lights in it and it's long and a bit windy inside). About halfway through, the lights go out. I find myself driving in a two-lane tunnel, in complete darkness, hoping I don't hit a wall or another car, or another car hits me, panicking about what to do, when I suddenly click on my headlights, and the cars around me started to do the same. Clearly I wasn't the only one in shock to have had that happen.
The last night, while heading to my mom's place in Concord, I managed go the wrong way while in Mountain View, so I exited 85 at Moffet to get back on 85 the other way. The ramps for this are those stupid clover-leaf ramps, the ones with the tight turn in a full circle. As I was nearing being off the ramp, suddenly my back tired hit an oil spot (it had sprinkled, making the roads slippery) and I started going in a circle, like something thrust me into the middle of oncoming traffic by flicking the back end to make me go in a circle. With cars coming, I wasn't sure whether it would be better to be hit by oncoming cars or to slam into the barrier in the middle of the road.

You sound like Tom Green when he was just throwing random terms out about computers in his interview with K Rose.

Yes, I'm okay. By some freaking miracle, all cars managed to stop without hitting me or each other, and I got the car back under control and stopped before hitting the opposite wall. My car is a BMW and I love it. Needless to say, I've been kind of nervous driving for a few days. Normally one to drive 80 (in clear weather), I've been driving about 50. Just too scared.
The Caldecott really needs to have something done. What's been the hold-up on the fourth bore? The middle bore opening in whichever direction is to be busier is annoying as all hell when driving the opposite direction means merging four busy lanes into two, causing further back-up. I'm not sure how well maintained the tunnels are, but seeing a light our here and there is just common. But for the lights to suddenly all go out is not, and could have resulted in some serious harm. WHen something goes wrong when driving, we never expect to suddenly do without site, never have to think about turning the lights on because we're suddenly blind. Darked comes on gradually. Except this time.
However, under controlled circumstances, rather than with oncoming traffic and heading toward a barrier, spinning like that could be fun.

LOL to the extreme. This earned snorting laughter, embarassment, and my eternal devotion!
