Right, so here's what I wanna know, where all my Retrogaming dawgs at?!

Personally, while I DO love modern games, to me, sometimes nothing beats a good ol' fashioned game of Super Mario Brothers or Mega Man.

So what I wanna know is, what was your absolute, all time favourite game or series of games for any console before (but not including) N64...I'm talking 16-bit graphics as the very most advanced end of this spectrum, anything within there or further back, is fair game.

Also, Emulators, yay or nay? and if you use 'em, what do you use? Myself, I'm an emulator junkie. Hell, I'm planning to dedicate an entire hard drive to emulated gaming, possibly even a small fileserver!

Additionally, if you owned any of the original consoles, what was your first, and what was your favourite? NES or Sega...or maybe you were one of those mavericks that had a TurboGraphix 16 or were lucky enough to have a Neo-Geo or Sega Saturn.

"Mega Man 2" is probably my favorite game from that time. I had more fun with the SNES combined, though. SNES is the best console experience I've ever had, probably because I was just the right age when it was popular.

Some extremely good titles on the SNES, in my opinion: "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back", "Mortal Kombat 2", "Street Fighter 2", "Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past" (I think this is the best Zelda-game, actually), "Super Mario World". I've forgot lots of amazing titles for sure, but this is what I could remember right away.

I occasionally play some of them, always using emulators (SNES9x/RockNES) because my/our SNES died a long time ago.

Edit: Also, "Star Wing" / "Star Fox" was so incredibly awesome at the time, and still fun to this day. I remember getting sad because the rabbit (Peppy Hare) or the frog (Slippy Toad) died or something. I rarely think about how this is probably how the really young ones think about the current consoles and games. It's easy to forget how much your age has to do with that kind of thing. I will probably never get how you can get really attached to the characters in modern games, because I've sort of outgrown that kind of feeling. I'm definitely not saying that feeling is bad; just that I can never seem to get it anymore in modern games.

I love retro games. I was into emulators years ago, but now I just play the games I own or get new ones on the Wii VC. I just downloaded Startropics and Lords of Thunder.

All old games ever did was annoy me, and make me hate games. No save points, continues, everything killing you in one hit... blah.

However, I will say Solomon's Key. They really need to remake that sucker, that was one of the most devious puzzle games ever. EVER! God, I love that game.

All the cool kids are saying that nowadays. They also ask who let out said dawgs.

And oh yeah, my first and absolute favorite console was my Sega Genesis. That's basically the system that made me a "gamer". Many many hours of Sonic, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and MUCH MUCH MORE. I was definitely a Sega fanatic. Even though Sega doesn't produce consoles anymore, I still believe that "Sega does what Nintendon't".

And as for emulation gaming, I play pretty much EVERY system on my PSP and I use DGen for Genesis games on my computer. :D

My Super Nintendo made me the gamer I am today. I still have it. It still works.
It was the first console I owned to go online (via Xband modem).
My favorite game on that system is Mortal Kombat II.
I played that game soooo much. Then I was able to play other people on Xband, which kept me playing even more.
I have yet to play a game as much as MKII.

The Genesis game that still gets me all giddy is World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.
My favorite co-op game of all time.

I tried emulating, but I could not get the feel of the games without the correct controllers.
The only time I enjoyed emulation was when I hooked up my Xbox controller to my PC and got to play The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time again.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that even though my favorite game was Sonic 3 & Knuckles, my first and most influential game was Sonic 1. Pretty much EVERY SINGLE DAY after and/or before pre-school I would be sitting in front of our giant console Tv playing that game. Man, just hearing the "Green Hill Zone" music brings back TONS of memories.:D

Thinking back in chronological order from what I remember, my favourites were:

I think this was a ZX Spectrum (I was very young at the time):
Dailey Thompsons Decathalon
Bruce Lee
Winter Games
(These badboys were on a tape - I feel sorry for kids who never had to experience the ridiculously long loading times of the tape and the cool sounds they made)

Amiga Era:
Bubble Bobble
Rainbow Island
Speedball 2
The chaos engine
James Pond
New Zealand Story

Arcade Era:
Street fighter 2
Galaga
Snow Bros
Wonderboy in monster land

Home console:
Contra (pretty much all of them kicked ass)
Super Mario Bros and Super Mario World
Sonic1 and 3
Tetris on the gameboy
Zelda Links Awakening
Bomberman
Golden Axe
Sunset Riders (they really should bring this series back)

And no doubt a hundred others that I've completely forgotton about

I also have all my old systems hooked up to my TV. NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, Dreamcast, PS2 (which can play my PSone games), and Wii (which can play my Gamecube games). I also have an Atari 2600 which is playable as soon as I screw in the connector. My Super Pong is in the closet though. I also still have my GBAsp so I can play all of my gameboy, gameboy color and gameboy advance games. My Virtual Boy is a little broken, so I need to buy another one.

Bruce Lee

I actually played that game at a friend's house. The loading times were crazy. I remember we would start it, go do lots of stuff and return and be psyched about it, mainly because we had waited so long.

We also played lots of "Mega Man 2" there. I wonder why we even bothered to play the Bruce Lee game when we could just instantly play MM2. :P

I have Vectorman for the Genesis. AWESOME game. Also, pretty excellent graphics for a 16-bit system.

I hope it's ok if I list (quite) old PC games. Where I've put '(series)' I don't do this for those who don't know these were games series, but to illustrate that I liked the whole series, not just the first:

Wolf 3D
Doom (series)
Wing Commander (series)
Overkill (2D shooter)
Stunt Island
Sam & Max Hit the Road
Lion King (although this was just as good on the SNES I had it on PC)

I had a NES and a SNES but we all already know the best games that we had on those, so I won't list the carts that you all love.

My first game console was the Atari 2600 but I think I only owned Tank Battle and Astroblaster. The next thing I owned was a Commodore 64 which I used a bunch. The first system I bought for myself was the Genesis and I've had an empty wallet ever since. My favorite system (16bit or older) was the SNES.

I'd have to say that the one game that stands out as the one that impressed me the most at the time and is the game I'd show off the most was Out Of This World. Seeing that run on a SNES for the first time was amazing. Forget the fact that I can barely outrun the beast on the first level. It was unlike anything else available at the time.

other notable favorites:

SNES
Chrono Trigger, Super Mario World, Desert Strike, Jungle Strike, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, David Crane's Amazing Tennis, Out of this World, Pilotwings, Super Mario Kart, Super Off Road

GENESIS
The Lost Vikings, Ecco the Dolphin, Flashback, Road Rash, Sonic (1 & 2), Starflight, Comix Zone, WWF Wrestlemania:Arcade,

NES
Star Trek 25th Anniversary, Super Mario

NEO-GEO (didn't own but played arcade)
Samurai Shodown (ALL versions), Metal Slug (ALL versions), 2020 Super Baseball, Shock Troopers

ARCADE (OLD SCHOOL)
Warriors, Tail Gunner, Omega Race, DKJr.,

ARCADE (90s-ish)
All Samurai Shodown games, MK & MK2, SF alpha 3

Colecovision:
Donkey Kong Jr
Rocky

3DO:
Road Rash
Need for Speed

PC:
Aztec
Castle Wolfenstein (the original, not 3D)

Old, old old school.

I'll always have a warm spot for the first castlevania (Symphony of the Night is also amazing... does that count as retro?), Mega Man 1-3, and Ghosts & Goblins (but damn that fucker is hard!).

My first system was either an Atari 2600 or an Atari Video Pinball system. I'm not sure which one I played first, but some of my earliest memories are of playing those systems.

There is no possible way for me to decide what my favorite classic games are. There are just too many. A lot of my most played videogames were provided by Capcom and Konami.
