Instead of freepops you can use ePrompter to get text versions of emails. Links don't always appear in the email nor do pics, but it's nice to have all my emails retrieved every 15 min.

If you are using Thunderbird, try webmail (http://webmail.mozdev.org/) extension. Works similiarly to freepops and only runs when thunderbird is.
It supports multiple sites.
Also Gmail, Aol, & Aim all support imap and pop natively, (you only have to change account settings for gmail).
Also if you are using lightning(calendar for Thunderbird); you can use Provider for Google Calendar (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/4631) to sync your calendar back/forth to Google.

The first time I needed this kind of service was for my old Hotmail account. I was using GetMail, and it seems to work with the new Windows Live Mail as well.
