aww, this slide show bit is darling.
I love Professor Cannata's enthusiasm to his class, all snuggled in blankets.
There IS a crayon physics demo out there, but it isnt deluxe, so you cant do the cool stuff like swinging kicking shoes. still fun though.

I watched Macross II, Macross Plus and Macross Zero.
Macross II and Plus were like....my childhood.
the first anime I saw while knowing it was anime was Ninja Scroll
then I realized that Speed racer..Voltron And the Street Fighter Animated movie. and all that other stuff was anime..

I wasn't even aware that there was so many more versions of it until I saw the boxed set when I was working retail. And yet still have not watched any of the others.
Huge Voltron fan too back in the day. Even had the die-cast lions set. Until I totally destroyed them as a child.

Microsoft screwed up "Halo" gameplay? They delayed it, but I'm pretty sure it ended up being a disappointment because it just wasn't that good.
If you're talking about how the game changed from "Halo" to "Halo 2", Microsoft already owned Bungie before "Halo" was released, and that was the point where they screwed up.
Also, I think Epic releases Gears with Microsoft Game Studios, but aren't a part of that group. I'm not sure, though.

I thought that the Wii would come up in conversation during the show with the topic of being left handed. I will say that when I tried playing some Super Mario Galaxy with my other hand I was kinda wierded out. Has anyone else here tried to play Nintendo with their other hand since the Wii is the only ambidextrous controller out there?

I used to watch Robotech sporadically as a kid and loved them, but never remembered when it came on (yeah, I know). But in college, a friend of mine had them all on tape--taped off the TV, vintage 80s commercials and all. So a bunch of us had a total geek-out and watched them all in a row. While drinking, etc. It was awesome.

I've used the mouse on both hands, but most mice are made for the right hand, and the right hand only. It makes me pissy, but what are you going to do?

I'm right-handed, but I had a roommate who used the mouse as a lefty (even though he also was a righty) because his dad is left-handed and that's how he grew up using a mouse. Since his was the only computer in the apartment, I became an ambidextrous mouse user. It actually comes in pretty handy at work nowadays when I need to work on a lefty's computer at their desk.

I also play guitar right-handed.

I too, like our hosts, watched Robotech and Voltron back in the 80s. I remember that I loved those shows, but unfortunately I dont remember much about them. I remember those badass Cyclones from Robotech and wishing that was a real thing you could buy.
I'm sure many of you already know that Toby Maguire's producing the live action Robotech?
yssman
02-27-2008, 05:20 AM
Awesome intro guys, I was very confused at first, but it had my brother and I in stitches in the end!
Per the question of Anime, although I'm old enough to remember Voltron and Robotech, it was shows like Dragonball Z and movies like Ghost in the Shell that brought me in... And consequently, have kept me in. Thing is, unlike American animated shows, they are so incredibly complex that I often have a hard time understanding just what the hell is going on. Shows like Bleach and Death Note come to mind on [Adult Swim] right now...
On the question of Gears of War 2: I'm in agreement with ya'all, keep it the same, and I wouldn't be sad. Thing is, my GOW1 disc became scratched shortly after I bought it, and I never finished it. Ruh-Roh. Still, an awesome game, and I can't wait for more!
...And one more thing...
My Dad is ambidextrous, and I am to some extent as well. Although I do almost everything right handed, oddly enough, I play the Wii with my left hand. It just makes more sense that way?

Not a problem for left-handed mac users.
Another left-hander here! I do almost everything left "side" dominant, but I do bat right-handed and use my mouse right-handed (I never tried it the other way).

Well, after watching the who show and seeing a comments about how awesome the intro was, I was dumbfounded by it and had to google it. I feel like a douchebag for not seeing the movie it was from yet, but I do have it and the subsequent sequeals on DVD and will be watching them this week. =) Only took most of my geek life to finally see them. =/
As for the show itself, it was just as funny as the rest of them. Nothing is standing out for me because I can't remember things for that long after I see them. =/ I usually have to take notes while watching something to remember what I watched. =/
Anywho, keep it up guys. I'll be sending ya'll a video question soon. =)

The videogame segment was great agreed and I liked the slide show. Good job by Jeff for retaining all the information he covered a lot of ground.
In terms of Gears of War 2. I would be happy with more of the same. Like the guys said the original Gears raised the bar by which most games are compared so I expect more of the same innovation that Dan said best "Guys like me could never ever think of.'

Video Games - I'd be interested to know if Dan or Alex every tried playing SW KoTOR. I always thought that was the best Star Wars story only to the original trilogy, and come on, it's the star wars universe. You can be whatever you want (gunslinger, jedi, sith). But most of all, the story.
Also, a weird question, but where the hell was Dan's lav mic? Well done whoever hid it sir. :)

It was hilarious to see Dan list Akira, Ninja Scroll and Guyver as his first Anime experiences - as they were for sure mine too.
I remember Teletoon used to play Ninja Scroll SUPER late at night, and that's what got me hooked on anime. I also remember them showing this very very strange Anime about a cat riding a train to the end of the universe... If anyone has seen that, or knows what it is, please let me know haha.
I'd be interested to hear if anyone else on here has played Lost Odyssey, because I have yet to play an RPG on my (new) Xbox 360. I'd be stoked to try it, as well as FFXII.
Also, I will likely go see Be Kind, Rewind this week.

Just when I thought there was NO way to make that "He doesn't like you" scene fresh again... the "death sentence on twelve systems" bit was INSPIRED.
"Be Kind Rewind" has been making me think of the few little home movies I made when I was a kid, they look so bad but there's always some little thing that was inspired brilliance (case in point, my sister and I did a Star Trek flick in 1993 and we used the static off the TV for the transporter effect). A friend and I also did a CGI animated Beowulf with Kid Pix Studio, which we had to port over to his computer on a half dozen floppy disks, and since there was no way to port computer images onto a tape back then, I had to cam it like I was bootlegging a movie while my friend did the soundtrack live. No cuts, brilliant.
Any of you guys in the forum do stuff like that? I wanna know if the TRS guys did that when they were kids, it would be awesome given how often they do that now and how much they talk about the idea recently (with BKR, Son of Rambow, the kid-made Indiana Jones flick). Might make an interesting segment.

How amazing would it be if he HAD done the prequel trilogy, years before it came out? There were all those books and so on explaining the backstory, he could have come up with a cockamamie "Episode Zero" prequel about how things came to be. That would be brilliant.
Either way, Dan, you gotta include that! Show us a scene, then recreate that scene with the TRS guys, recreating the performance as KIDS rather than the performance from the original movie. That would be interesting (I want to do the same thing with my old flick). And keep it gloriously junkpunk.

Another great episode guys! Loved the opening!! As soon as Jeff said "He doesn't like you" ...I got the opening :)!
I have not played any RPGS (Japanese or Western) since the old Final Fantasy days. I've never really enjoyed them all that much, and I have a feeling I'll be agreeing with Alex if I ever played Lost Odyssey. It's awesome that the TRS guys finally mentioned some anime! I've been a long time fan but the only ones I've seen that they mentioned were Akira and Ninja Scroll. I guess I'm a bit too young to have seen Voltron or some of the other classics.
I have yet to see Be Kind, Rewind. Loved Eternal Sunshine though, one of my favs. With Akira getting remade into a live action flim, I'm a bit nervous about it because I really loved the anime but it should be interesting to see a different take on it. And I'll definitely watch it when it comes out in theaters.
Jeff - Great job with the powerpoint! The blurry picture of 'Visual Clarity' was too funny.. there's something about ironic pictures that I find absolutely hilarious :D ! I'm a bit jealous you got to play SSBB, I've been dying for it to get released! And Dan "Babyface" Trachtenberg was very fitting :) haha.

Just a quick piece of "South Paw" trivia.
the Latin word for left-handed is sinister.
the Latin word for right-handed is dexter.
When you are left-eye dominate you are ocular sinister.
When you are right-eye dominate you are ocular dexter.
This concludes today's pointless trivia.

Great episode! I laughed out loud on multiple occasions. I'm a bit ashamed to admit I didn't get the opening though. It has been a while since I've seen the originals . . .
I completely agree with all of you about Be Kind Rewind. There were definitely flaws. I felt like the direction of the movie changed too much in the last act, it kind of threw me off. But it had so much heart, and character, that I just couldn't help but love it.
And I too was wondering about how you all play the Wii, since I don't think I've ever heard that come up in any of the reviews.
And finally, I have to mention that I finally got around to watching The Shield. I just finished Season One, and although I was somewhat uncertain at first, now I'm blown away by how great it is. Thanks TRS (Jeff)!

"I can't lay on my right side and I'm seeing shadows and have to pee alot, what is it doc ?"
"Hmmm, it looks like you're in old school anime mode, do you have black lines coming out of your back when you run ?"

Alex's right handed drumming rang true with me... I'm right handed and use my left on the hi-hat (w/ no cross over). It makes a lot of things easier, but sometimes it's hard to play other peoples stuff. I also throw right and bat/golf left. weird.

That's normal for beginners, I learnt that way. It's not easier though, it does seem like it is to begin with.
Alex means playing crossed-over, right on hi-hat and left on snare, rather than him playing a left-handed kit and playing left on hi-hat, right on snare. I know a left-handed drummer who has to flip the kit to play.
I know left-handed guitarist who can play right-handed guitars, upside down. He plays it natural to him, right hand on the neck, left hand strumming, strings upsie down, it's so weird. He said his older brother had a guitar and would beat him up every time he chagned the strings so he could play, so he adapted.

Yay Left-handed people pwn!
I just met a girl in my class named Shannon (same as me), and she's also left-handed... weird. I think we are taking over.

I just happened to come across this again... while right handed cross over is certainly the norm it isn't limited to beginners. I'm no professional, but i've been playing 10-15 years. listen to some billy cobham, then tell me it's for beginners only :-)

I'm sure someone else has pointed this out but did anyone see Jeff on Mahalo Daily 062? At 1 minute 31 seconds the Mahalo crew is walking through the crowd at the GDC and there goes Jeff! It was pretty crazy.
