View Full Version : Shameless Self-Promotion for Fun and Feedback

Hey kids. I just put up a cover of Music C from Tetris for the NES on my Virb site (http://virb.com/erickinch) and I was wondering if I could get some feedback from you guys. It's just a simple 3 instrument cover (drums, guitar and bass) of my favorite Tetris song. Anyway, let me know what you all think.

Its not bad, but C? Come on dude, A is where it's at.

I've always loved Music C. While everyone and there dog knows Music A, Music C is just so relaxing. There's nothing too complex about it, it's a simple arpeggiated repeating pattern and I've always liked it better than the other Tetris tunes.

fun stuff. what do you use to record, both hardware and software?

I used Guitar Pro 5 to map out the tab and make the midi file, then imported it into FL Studio 7 and created/added the sound plug-ins so this is all digital. No actual instruments were abused in the making of this short track. I'm actually still working on learning it legit.

Hey, I didn't write the rules and I don't want to defend them in this case.

Suffice it to say, if Eric was a newbie, this thread would have been deleted and he would have been banned.

Since he is member of the community and we often observe an exemption for artwork from members, I'll only whine about it...

But, calling attention to a thread about "Shameless Self Promotion" does put into focus this apparent loop-hole. More litigious members of the community will only bring this thread up later when we attempt to control actual spam like Digg submission links. I would have preferred a more subtle title.

Posts like this are against a strict reading of forum rules. I considered deleting Aria post, but decided to extend her the same exemption I give you.

Was that a mistake?

I don't think so. It's not like I'm planning on doing this often. I guess I'll keep stuff like this to my Pownce feed from now on.

EDIT: Or better yet, can we change the policy so that members in good stead can post personal websites/whatnot for non-profit, feedback purposes only? I mean, it's not like I'm making any money of anything I produce.

Eric, please. I think you should post your art. Honestly.

I think the spirit of that particular rule does not have posts like this in mind. I will never delete posts about forum members personal artwork.

However, there are certain forum members who don't have a sense of subtlety about how the application of different rules can be subjective and vary from case-to-case. This is what I was lamenting.

Or better yet, can we change the policy so that members in good stead can post personal websites/whatnot for non-profit, feedback purposes only? I mean, it's not like I'm making any money of anything I produce.I think the mods already have that flexibility. However, the rule is not about money, It's about stopping spam. Good-standing members are given latitude in this regard. As long as you're not spamming. I think you'll be okay.

Why do I keep linking to Yahoo every time I try going to the Google.ca site?Bah. I feel like an idiot, because I'm tech savvy enough to know it's very likely this isn't a "virus". There have been studies done that show that after a certain amount of time playing Tetris, a substantial portion of people will dream of it. I will not even begin to describe to you the epic dream I had set to your song when I fell asleep on the hour and a half bus ride home today.

do you practice ?

you need to sing regularly to be able to sing well on demand

sing easy songs that are easy on your voice but do it regularly like at least every other day

i sing along to jazz classics or musical theatre and i sing ah ah ah (on pitch) to operatic pieces

fortunately you don't have to practice for hours a day like with an instrument but you have to practice some

Exactly, especially when singing, it's based largely upon the background sound and overtones that your ear picks up. I don't have perfect pitch at all (damn you Jeff Martin!!!) but I can tell when I'm fucking up.

that's why you have to practice the more often you get it right while not under pressure the more likely you will get it right when you really need to

when i first started singing i couldn't match a pitch under pressure at all

but i had good teachers and i worked hard

it is amazing how exhausting singing for five minutes is

my greater problem was breathing

Just an update for those that may actually be wondering if I'm recording or not. I'm having all sorts of throat and chest issues right now (might be bronchitis again) and I'm in no condition to record/work on any vocals. Joel, I really appreciate the high praise but I don't consider myself a genius. It's all very simple. I started working with FL Studio four or five years ago (when it was called Fruityloops 2.0) and have a pretty good working knowledge of the program. The recording and mixing? Also very simple with the right equipment and software. In fact, I do all my mixing in FL Studio. As for the drums, that all comes back to the fact that I used to play (but haven't for a lot of years) and I know basic patterns in various time signatures and used FL Studio as an elaborate drum machine.

As for lyrics and guitar, that stuff is hard. You can hear me fall off the rhythm a couple times in the song. But this song, the lyrics were easy. Like I mentioned in the other thread, they more or less wrote themselves which made my job a whole lot easier. I just had to find the right melody.

Haha! The Dude abides. :)

you totally underestimate your skillzorz.

very very few talented musicians can do all that without distracting themselves from their actual singe instrument. You have an understanding of so many concepts of the whole thing. you are a "holistic" musician. You get the whole sphere of the production from square one, to mix my metaphores. I got huge high hopes for you. You just need confidence.

and dude, you got tweaks to make to the song. make em and repost them! ever see "let it be" movie?

Maybe I do, but to me, when I have an idea and I can hear the majority of the song... I can crank it out in a matter of a few hours. Hell, that one was written Thrusday night and recorded and mixed Friday afternoon. You have no idea just how high on it I was. Like for someone who had been listening to Rock music for years, to hear something that could very easily be played on the radio (is that a bad thing? ;)) that I made myself, from scratch: was just amazing. Truly a special moment in my life.

Never saw the "let it be" movie. I'm not the biggest Beatles fan in the world. I love hearing their songs every now and again and enjoy it but I wouldn't consider myself a fan.

I've actually been really inspired by Johnathan Coulton's hour of breaking down what he does on TWiT a few weeks back. Really great insights there and he does a lot of the same stuff I do, just in a Mac-centric world.

But Pat on MacBreak Weekly eh? I'll have to put that on the iPod and listen to it tomorrow on the train.

This has been discused at length. Rules aren't selectively applied in light of seniority. I would, again, point out that this thread is still open. It was a *gentle* reminder that there is a rule, specifically, against advertising in the forum.

edit for full clarification:
Look, here's the final fuzzy word here. You're an example being made because you resurrected a thread that looks, smells and feels like spam with more spammy looking goodness. I delete dozens of threads that follow the exact same format of this thread on a daily basis. This is me pointing out a rule.

That said, we haven't deleted the thread. We naturally support sharing of creative works but please be aware and cautious of the line between sharing and sharing for personal gain (I'm not saying that's specifically what you're doing but it's rather ambiguous).

Again, your thread hasn't been locked or deleted, this was pointing out that this is not a spammy forum.

If I post a pic of one of my paintings on flickr, who also advertise, it's cause I wanna share it with you. Not cause I want flickr to get one more hit. When a guy on the diggnation thread posts his comicbook of kevin and alex, gonna ban that too, no matter where it's hosted.

we are all friends here, in a community, and want to share stuff we do. with our friends. No one is spamming nothing on this thread. talk to the other mods about this, please, cause If I can't , we can't show our friends our stuff here, there are tons of other places your customers, er, viewers, er profit margin can go to.

Rules aren't selectively applied in light of seniority.

actually, they are. Great Mods here. spam vanishes instantly. Non spam among us friends gets to be shared amongst us. and also, dammit. With this whole thing going on... still aint even heard the song yet! and that was the point!

I *will* say this, with no ambiguity: Rules are NOT to be selectively applied with regard to seniority.

We are not elitists in this respect and this has been the cause of some great consternation in the past.

Thank you! Yes it has. Forum politics, blech.. Circle-jerking elitism, I can do without. I'm glad at least the staff has their heads on straight.

i would rather you be part of the commuinty rather than popping in every now or then to post more of your stuff.

I seem to remember my last post before this fiasco was me asking for help about some network issues in the Windows forum...

Jesus. GimpBully is staff. He made a point, a valid point, listen to it. You're being blatantly disrespectful and it is totally uncalled for.

Eric put "Self-Promotion" in the thread title because, obviously, he wasn't sure if it was allowed or not. It was allowed, and staff doesn't think it should be. Deal with it. Just because mods allowed it before, doesn't make it right.

This could have been closed, or even worse Eric banned. Instead it was just mentioned, and we're all left to post. Eric is more than welcome, as per forum rules, to update his signature and tell us each time he uploads some more stuff to virb. Try complying to staff rather than resisting.

You guys are all pointing out exactly the kind of elitism Gimp is talking about, and again, just because it goes on doesn't make it right.

the mods set a precedent, and this aint the only thread they did it with.. the "donate to my baby thread" "look at my comic thread" "here's my art " thread.... this is my podcast thread. we aint selling anything. just sharing with frieinds. THAT IS WHAT COMMUNITY IS ABOUT!!! yes I meant to shout. this is rediculous. we are all friends here. I wanna know what you are doing, eating, vacationing, creating, ...
Iti is absolutely totally ludicrous to bitch at eric for shariing hs talents among friends.

and if it comes to blows, then fuck rev3. fuck the forums. and fuck the mods. I can make my own forum for those who want to share. but most of us wanted to support rev3. and be part of it.

seems just cause it is music, it's verbotten, but If I put a poem here, no one would blink an eye

I think we've clarified things clearly. Watch the line between sharing and promotion. We're all for free flow of ideas and creativity but this is not the appropriate place for promotion. This post clearly rode this line as closely as it could. Again, the thread is STILL open.

I want to assure you that other threads like this have been taken into account. Some of those are even closed for completely separate reasons, some of them rode the line even closer, hell, some even stepped clearly over it but we were lenient (VERY much like this instance).

Lost power when this first started and just got it back hah...glad it didn't too far out of hand.

Like it or not I would think staff members have more say then mods. No drama needed it only causes more problems got to have peace around here to keep it a fun place to be.

Rules are rules if we didn't have it would be chaos and digg stories being posted every other post.

So I hope it can be let go, he didn't delete the links nor did he close the thread. Just stated it was breaking a forum rule, which technically it is.

The rule has always been there and enforced. Sometimes they let things slide by, but not always.

Keep it in the sig and keep things peaceful round these parts.
