You mean the torrents from Rev3 or other torrents you find on the internet?

how many seeds are there? If you don't have the sources you won't get any speed. Torrents aren't constant, sometimes they are really fast, sometimes they are painfully slow

Torrents that actually go quickly are annoyingly rare.

Yea...sometimes even when there are like 2000 seeders, it's still gonna be slow.

Regardless of the number of seeders, it seems like the only things that download in a reasonable amount of time are CDs. Seems like if I want to check out a song or a CD, it downloads in about 5 minutes. Anything else and I just have to leave on it for days.

Who's your ISP? you might have been throttled - Optimum Online does that without telling you for example.
Or your ports arent forwarded. Could just be bad swarm (Little/no seeds or an absurdly high number of leeches)

If you have researched all the possible technical issues and you're still getting slow speeds, I would suggest trying to get an invite to a private torrent site.
Your speed problem has nothing to do with your platform. It is all networking.

What bit-torrent client are you using?
I use Azureus, and I get the max speed my ISP will allow on most torrents. I'm using a MacBook on WiFi too...
Azureus 2.5.0 Download (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/azureus/Azureus_2.5.0.0_OSX.dmg?download)
It's the best client I've ever used, and it's open-source too :) .

i have dsl 1.5 down and 346klb up...
go into preference and reset your upload seed to at least 25 kilobytes( bits or bytes?) upload, may not increase download but help you find more seeders. it doesnt seem to matter and it doesnt slow my download.
the last thing i torrented was "the doors" 2.5 gigs took several days to get and got between 35 and 75 kilobytes topped out at 125 kilobytes.
"mtu" settings on my ibook g4 are 1349, not standard 1500.

the 1500 mtu default is with DHCP(Usually found in cable and fiber connections) - my PPPoE connection has a 1492 (usually found in DSL or with people who signed up to Verizon FIOS prior to 6 months ago)
As for changing upload speed, its best to have it 2/3 the max. Though it could also be the number of connections used that is causing problems.. Azureus handles this automatically now - which is best for most people who are not comfortable setting it up. Last thing i got, not mentioning it, but maxed my download speed out at 2.6mb/s down, and then was seeding at 550kb/s up.

Client wouldnt matter, All OS X clients handle the protocol itself the same - so it would just be a matter of setting it up properly to get speeds. Besides, uTorrent + Crossover runs better then any OS X client does - if you have an x86 mac.

try enabling encryption in Azureus. your ISP is probably throttling bittorrent traffic. also, try enabling UPnP. it usually helps getting around any weird port forwarding problems.

A while back Paul Stamatiou posted a great tutorial on his blog (http://paulstamatiou.com/2005/10/02/how-to-configure-azureus/) [which I believe now spans about 4 or 5 posts] on how to effectively set up Azureus. A really great resource that explains a lot as well.

A few weeks ago I would have been disagreeing with all the Azureus recommendations as its Java-reliant memory footprint seemed to end up being rather Sasquatchian by the end of the day.
But ever since the latest 2.5 release things seem to run MUCH smoother. Not only does it not bog things down after a couple hours (or days) of running, but it also seems to be playing nicer with other aspects OS X in general.
On top of that, it seems as though virtually every other Mac Bittorrent client is being banned by the trackers I've come in contact with for various "unreliability issues" (read: lots in, not-so-much out).

I totally agree. I was using Azureus [because I love the SafePeer plugin; it gives me that warm, fuzzy "I'm safe" feeling] on a dedicated Windows machine because I didn't want to bog down my mac.
But I recently tried out the update for the mac on a whim, and I have to say that you can actually multi-task with Azureus in the background now. Although, you really need to tame down the upload/download speed [which I believe is set to "maximum" at default] or it will feel like you have dial-up internet.

I didn't know that ISP's may be throttling BitTorrent action and that using incryption could help out. How common is this?

I saw this thread and have been having a similar issue. I recently just downloaded xtorrent and my speeds have been horrid. I'm not sure what the issue could be and am debating sitting on the phone with customer support for my ISP but I don't know if they're just going to dick me around or not.

blame xtorrent first. it does not support encryption and some trackers have banned it. the new version of transmission (the program xtorrent is based on) will get around the bans supposedly, but Azureus is still the only client i find that works really well (despite being a java-based resource hog)... it allows encryption and download of selective files within a torrent, and no other client offers those features for macs yet. go with Azureus, enable encryption, make sure you are doing your port forwarding right, and you'll be golden.

Does this still hold true with the new update? I noticed that the whole screen is different and I didn't really like the interface. I use Tomato Torrent and It seems to work really well.

I've been using BitRocket (http://www.bitrocket.org/) for a long time and have been very happy with it. Depending on the torrent I can get d/l speeds of a couple hundred KB/s. At least, I think it's KB/s. I'm not downloading anything at the moment, so I'm going by memory. My ISP is Speakeasy, and I'm pretty sure they don't throttle bittorrent traffic.
I just tried Miro (http://www.getmiro.com/) today, and it does a really nice job with the Rev3 RSS torrent feeds.

There a lot of people using Azureus on here, but I've found that that Azureus cripples my bandwidth. I love the program, but I can't doing anything else online while its running, even if I limit the upload speed. Any suggestions on what I can do to fix this?

Yeah use Transmission, it is very fast and simple.

So I downloaded some torrent files. I get a '.torrent' file. I put them in pretty programs. In Azureus, I get an little infinity symbol, and Transmission just kinda sits there and makes '.torrent.torrent' files. What am I doing wrong?

With Transmission you should just have to drag the .torrent file into the window, then the actual file or folder should appear on yoru desktop or where ever you have it set to go.
Also be aware, when you go to a torrent site, there needs to be some seeders of the file or your never going to download it. I would say dont even mess with files under 10 seeders.

Huh. Dragging worked better than File:Open. Strange. Thanks!
Next question: Why does one say it's downloading while the other other say it's uploading? They're different, and I want to download the second file.

To be honest, I've had better experience with BitTorrent on the Mac than on Windows (even with the criminal absense of a version of uTorrent available on the Mac). However, the speed is much more dependant on the .torrent file, not the OS, as well as what client you use.
On Windows, I'd say use uTorrent and on the Mac use Transmission (a quick Google will find download links to both).
I really like Transmission on the Mac. Very light weight, but still does everything I need. I'd advise staying away from Azureus in any form, just because there are better alternatives out there. If you really want to use Azureus, use the classic build (2.5.0.4 on the Mac) and not the new Vuze infested shit.
BitTorrent has definitely changed, and improved how I get my television content :)
