dang, I love Claussen kosher dills. When they are all gone I use the leftover juice as the secret ingredient in my pasta salad.

Yeah. I'm on a food jag again. eat me. haha.

that's why I like those places where you get a burger and then have a "fixins" bar. bunch of pickles on the burger, but, oooppps, how did that gigantic pile of pickles land over there next to the cheese fries?

I love them for exactly the opposite reason. They save me the time of picking the pickles off when they inevitably forget I ordered my burger without.

How many here make their own pickles? If so, what types? As a kid I helped mom make bread and butter, dill and what was called Kosher dill. My lady and I tend to make bread and butters when we can find the right dill.

I don't like them on a burger, I do enjoy them as a side with a sandwich though.

I thought this thread was going to be about that treacherous bird, Joey.

But no, you've all just built my expectations up only to trample upon them once again!

Pickles? American style kosher pickles are bleh. Can't stand them.
Pickles on a burger? Curiously, I like them on a Chick-fil-a chicken sandwich, but pick them off a burger. I actually don't mind the "hint" of pickle that picking them off leaves behind, but don't like them on the actual burger.

Gherkins (cornichons) on the other hand I love. These are a french style pickle made with small (pinky finger) sized cucumbers. I also like pickle relish (either sweet pickle relish, or mustard pickle relish) ... awesome with ham or cold silverside/corned brisket.

I like pickles AND relish on burgers, and I like to drink the juice straight from the jar.

Pickles ftw. Good thread. I realllly like them. Digg relish as well.

I find that when like, playing wow, halo, or working on video, I like to munch on something.

It's definitely tons better for you to do so on something like a pickle, then chips or something along those lines. You are still getting that crunch you are craving, and at the same time some veg.

Good stuff.

I am going to add that back in my dim, dark past (high school), at the scottish hamburger chain I worked for, we used to clean the grills after houses with a mix of pickle juice and stuff called "sealite" (probably mispelt) that was basically crush seas shells (calcium carbonate). The acid reacting with the calcium carbonate got the grill spotless. We then coated them with vegetable shortening to keep them from oxidising overnight.

Pickles are great!
I used to hate pickles on burgers until I had real fresh crisp pickles on a burger then it tastes good...fast food places then yeah it's nasty.
And I love pickles to snack on.

Fast food pickles are the worst. Theyre always so soggy. A fresh sliced pickle isn't as bad, but still not really my thing.

As Token said, I like the taste you get after you pick them off the bun.

I was just thinking about that. I come by a lot of cucumbers, and it would be cool to pickle some of them instead of just using them in soups and stir fries. I've made some fermented foods so I imagine homemade pickles would be just as easy and delicious!

Remember, you can pickle almost any veggie, cucumbers are one of the most common. You can find several recipes at Foodnetwork.com, check for Alton Brown's recipes.

stir fried pickles?

I meant I stir-fry cucumbers. The fried pickle is a beast I have encountered but once before, and I hope to never lay eyes upon it again--although it was a fast food fried pickle. "Fast food" is like a huge multiplier for the grossness of food, turning even a miniscule amount of grossness into something that can make a man vomit up all their stomach contents on sight.

Mmm, it's true, although the high salt content kind of worries me--I tried to . I guess I could use vinegar instead of brine, though, and unless I started pickling things like crazy it wouldn't be that big a deal. I'll check those recipes out.

Some pickles use a vinegar base others use a brine. Certain recipes use one or the other based on what the taste is supposed to be. The sodium content doesn't bother me because I don't drink the brine nor do I eat five pickles a week. Heck, I just wonder what the sodium load is on salted pumpkin seeds?
