There comes a time in every semi-intelligent man's life when he must acknowledge that he doesn't know the definition and he's concerned that everyone else does. So he sits and stews and says nothing so as not to embarrass himself.

Fortunately since I embarrass myself on an almost daily basis I'm not afraid to ask:

What the hell is a McGuffin already?!

What the hell is a McGuffin already?!

Hey brettville,

so a Mcguffin is something within a story that moves the plot along yet holds no real purpose or significance. The closes thing i can think of, if i am right, is the suitcase in Pulp Fiction. It's cool that it's mysterious and such but the events of the story really dont have a direct relation to it.

Every time the guys said "The Wire" ...my heart fluttered. When I actually read the notes and you said the best show ever..my heart skipped a beat. because for some reason I naively though that you would dub The Wire the best show ever....

anyway....

Can't wait for the wire discussion. Last episode of the wire is next week.

good thing I saved The Shield..cause I'm gonna have another daughter in less than 2 months and on those sleepless nights it's gonna be great to have seasons of a show to watch.

Due to Jeff's constant plugging of 'The Shield' I decided to watch the series over the last couple months.

CAUTION: Mild spoilers may follow.

I almost agreed with Dan's review of season 1 -- I would rate it about 50-60%. It was just good enough to keep me watching. The show is ugly to look at, the production quality is lacking, the lead actors are somewhat weak and the supporting actors are even worse. If Jeff had not been touting it as "the best show ever made" I may have given up on it. The one thing it did have going for it was the greyness of the characters -- but the first season limited this to only a handful of the characters (Mackey, Vendrell, and Aceveda to a degree).

I felt season 2 was similar to the first but maybe about 10% better.

Again, season 3 was another 10% increase over the second. This season we really start to see the moral ambiguity shining through.

I felt season 4 is where the show takes off. I really started to get emotionally involved with the characters. By this point I had pretty much forgiven Mackey for killing an innocent cop in the first episode of the series, I hated Vendrell for being the cop that Mackey trained him to be, Aceveda's true character really comes through after he moves on from the barn, and then there's Mara (let's not get started on her). Seasons 4, 5, 6 are about as good as television gets.

So in summary, I'm not entirely sure season 1 is a great endorsement for the show overall. You probably need to watch it or some important plot elements later on might not make sense, but there is a good chance you might not find it great right from the start.

Anyone else feel the same?

I haven't seen the episode yet, but how did they pick 5 for each category?

I thought the emails we sent were just nominations, and that everything was up for votes. Then again, if that were so, we'd just nominate every single segment. So I guess they tallied or something.

I voted for Austin Powers cause of the high production values. Maybe the London thing made me think it was better than it actually was. Surprised Big is up there. No Wayne's World?

I just got up to the N+ segment.

I've played the freeware version (a couple of years ago, I think. It's a really old game. Just like World of Goo, which I've also played many years ago, but that's a different story altogether. It's just weird that it's being talked about so highly at GDC when it's old.) and the game, if it's anything like the original, gets HARD. There was a reason the old game had a suicide button, cause you would trap yourself behind a wall that you couldn't open, or a switch would lock you out of the end door.

Is the new N anything like that?

Excellent show, as always men. Congrats on the 50th!!!

I was really happy to see you guys talk about The Shield at length. It really was deserving of its own segment. That being said, I have to agree with Dan. I've never been much of a fan of the show because of that "ooooh look what we can do!" factor that tries to make it edgy every time. And while I really do enjoy seeing the different characters go through these transformations, I kinda get to that point of "why do I care?"

Oddly enough, people could say much of the same about one of my favorite shows, Nip/Tuck, also on FX. They both debuted about the same time as I recall, but I always found Nip/Tuck to be much more entertaining and often more interesting... Maybe thats because some of my lady-friends really like it?

No bad feelings Jeff. I like The Shied in that "Oh, The Shield is on, I guess I'll watch it" sense. Stack it up against other shows like Nip/Tuck, Torchwood, and House... I'll pass on it.

===

Side note: Tried to convince the quasi-GF (long story) into watching TRS tonight, she turned it down in favor of American Idol. I guess...

I got her started on Digg and to some extent a mild interest in Star Wars, next stop is TRS and Diggnation.

And yes guys, she thinks all of you are "cute."

I have no idea what Dan's "No" was but both references were throwaways, so to speak: (what I took to be) the Tommy Boy reference was when Alex does the "not so much here or here..." bit at around 4:15 and the Clue reference was Jeff's "sweat on the side of my face" at 57:44 à la Madeline Kahn's "flames on the side of my face" hilariousness.

The emails were to nominate segments/shows/intros and whatnot. Through the process, the boys (Jeff) tallied them by hand (Jeff's) and the top five vote getters as counted by the boys (Jeff) were placed on the ballot so that the masses could vote on the best of each category.

This episode? Epic. Loved the intro.. Loved the surprise Shield talk. Loved the contentious discussions.

Decided to track down a copy of the original N for my mac at the hotel last night and I couldn't agree with Jeff more. What a frustrating game! I'm growing tired of puzzle games in different clothing. Puzzle Quest? Awesome game. The Puzzle portions of Drake: Uncharted Fortune in which I die because I chose to jump to a platform I had no business trying.. or because I didn't see the X button prompt in time.. or because the controls were a bit wonky and decided my hero needed to pop up from behind cover for no particular reason.. grrr.. give me an action game that isn't stunted with faux puzzle solving.. if I wanted to play an "action puzzle" game, I'll play that japanese box game.

<for the record.. I completed Drake. Loved the game.. wanted to throw my controller through my TV a few times out of sheer frustration with design choices, but that didn't stop me from needing to finish the game..>

Loved hearin' the nominees. So many epic memories.

On the subject of Knight Rider, you know what? I wouldn't WANT them to do it in the style of Battlestar Galactica. I'm kind of tired of that kind of show, you know? There's too many of them, Lost, Bionic Woman tried it (and failed so you know how well that worked), Greatest Show Ever, Heroes... what's wrong with deciding a show can be trash? Why can't there be a show on I can stop thinking and sort of half-watch?

The Knight Rider pilot to me felt like if they grabbed all the crew guys and directors from the 80s, brought them to today, showed 'em a quick demo reel of everything that was cool in the last twenty years, and put 'em to work. You could go through a CHECKLIST of things to do and they did 'em all kind of like clockwork.

Incidently, the plane was because they were sending Kitt to another country. The car itself is apparently incapable of flight, for all it's nanotechyness.

Now I gotta get back to trying to get new backgrounds done for the second season of TRS.

It hurt my heart to hear Dan give the show a thumbs down. As I was listening to Dan's critique, the look on my face probably matched the look on Jeff's face.

Amen, brother!!!! One thing I noticed that they didnt bring up was the creative camera work. If you watch the show strictly on a camera angle basis, I think that you will find, that the photography is brilliant. Just some of the camera angles with certain characters being included and without any dialog (which is rare) sometimes tells so many mini-stories that it is unreal.

If only everyone on the forums could have seen my face and hands while Dan was overly critiquing yet again and again not making\finishing a valid point why the show is not good. I think that his only valid point towards the negative was that he didn't care about the characters. Really?!?, Dan obviously doesn't care about the fact that there are people that go through real turmoil in their lives. Self-created turmoil or not, this show is exactly what Jeff said about every character having to deal with both ends of a problem and allowing the audience to judge what is right from wrong, which in a sense makes it somewhat interactive. Not to take a stab at Dan, he has had some funny moments on the show, but I think that he might need to take off the Hater Pants once in awhile and start enjoying something for what it is and not what it is not. In all fairness he does have a right to disagree, but come on, try to enjoy the good things in life a little, you're depressing the rest of us. Not really, but it sounded good.

I will agree with Alex's point about not being as realistic as "The Wire", but i think the budget issue between the two shows clearly shows which one has a higher budget, but to his point I will agree. Although, two different cities, Baltimore and LA, hmmmmmm interesting. Which is more gritty?

I have favorites that I love and movies that I know are good and I respect, and I generally like comedy more than other styles, but The Ususal Suspects is the perfect movie to me. Every facet of filmaking is perfect in this flick. Watch it with no distraction and try to absorb everything that's displayed. You will still want to watch it again as soon as it's over.

I don't have my Hater Pants on bro cause your wearing 'em. I wish you would stop watching this bad show called The Shield and enjoy the good things in life, you're depressing the rest of us.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.... settle down there, cowboy. First of all, it's "you're wearing 'em", not "your", and second of all, I think he was kidding about the "good things in life" bit, bro. Either way, you gotta leave TGSE out of your little dispute here. You don't really think it is a "bad show", do you? ...do you? And even if you do... telling someone to stop watching? <tear> You hurt me. In all those little ways, you hurt me.

I was just trying to put perspective on subjectivity (i.e. not telling him to stop watching, rather, parroting his statement).

...well I don't think it's a "good show" ;)

I just started watching "The Shield" and i must say that it is fantastic, although i dont think that its "the greatest show ever" it certainly is an amazing show with great small bits of humour when the drama gets too deep.

the greatest line in any show ever is from the shield it made me crack up laughing so hard...

"I saw this suspicious looking white guy and..."
"Wait what made him suspicious looking"
"...well he was white"

<3 you guys for introducing me to this show

I don't understand, why is no one saying anything about the David Cronenberg film Videodrome?

The movie came out in 1983 and was all about a signal that was put through TV that brainwashed the viewer into doing nutty things.

As this cult classic been seen by no one?

These guys are going off on it being so amazingly original yet the entire concept of the film had been done over 20 years ago. I had to register to post this, the episode they are going off on it being such an original concept, talking about Stephen King, yet not a single mention is being made about Videodrome.

Hi and welcome. Glad you registered!

I don't think Dan was saying the at the concept was original, but rather the filmmaking itself. It is not the idea of the story that is original, it is the tone and way it is told that is original. Dan and I both mentioned that the idea of technology as the "monster" has been done.

Hope that clears it up - and I hope you hang around and keep posting. :)

I really need to start watching The Shield soon. I bought the first 5 DVD seasons last summer because of Jeff's non stop recommendations. I was planning on waiting until Season 6 was released, so I could just watch them straight through.... but maybe it's time to start and I'll just download Season 6.

Trying to avoid spoilers is a hard thing to do. I was nervous watching TRS 50 and I'm even nervous reading through this thread. Especially after seeing Jeff's reaction to Dan finding out some big spoiler on Youtube a while back. I want to go into this show knowing nothing. (Not that I'm saying the spoiler is the reason Dan didn't like the show.)

I loved Videodrome. I watched it in a hotel room in Kingston a 3AM. One of the creepiest movies I ever seen.
