So you have to read Lord of the Rings and Hitchhikers Guide. And see at least the original three Star Wars movies. To not loses you geek cred. What are other things you've got to do (or not do) for full geek cred?

Yeah, I've seen/read all of those. I think watching and enjoying TRON is a part of it too... but like that other Albertan said, it's like indie cred: All bullshit. So what if i didn't see Modest Mouse before they were signed or that The Moon and Antarctica isn't my favorite album. I love it all.

I think I have to say "bullshit" in one of Aria's threads to add to my geek cred... wait I just did!

well, I'm not a geek anyway, but does one have to actually 'read' hitchhiker's guide? I listened to the audiobook narrated by Douglas Adams...

Badger - I taped H2G2 to Video. Not the TV series, but the original radio series when they were doing it as a marathon on the ABC (Australian national radio network, not the US TV network). Why a VCR? Because in long play mode I could fit it all on a VHS tape, rather than needing to swap 60 or 90 min tapes every 30/45 min. Is that geeky enough?

I can unroll a DAXBY into hand optimised assembler if that adds anything to the debate.

And I like Star Trek have LOTR lots of Rev3 and digg clothes and gaming shirts and games and figures and plushies...even my keychain lanyard is about gaming and I have a Phoenix Wright plushy keychain..tons of movies on DVD..maybe 200 or so and so many blue LEDs in my front room and glowy things..gah I could go on forever I consider myself a geek and have fun doing so.

When I was a kid, I watched The movie "hacker" 30+ times (Don't really remeber the name, Angelia Jolie stared in it).

Is that geek cred or just retard cred?

That may actually stifle geek cred more than help it... that movie was just bad...

and so many blue LEDs in my front room

I never understood the draw of blue LEDs...but then I don't care for a lot of light, so I prefer for red readouts when possible.

I can't speak for others who use Blue LED stuff...I just love the look of technology and like to imagine I am in the future on a ship in space...yes a 25 year old who loves imagination acts like a kid in that way ..I never outgrew that part of me and hope I never do.it's fun;)

There's a difference between geeks and dweebs. If the criteria are things such as reading LotR and HGttG, you are speaking of dweebs. The kind of people you see playing with their wooden swords and capes in the park, who cower in the corner when normal people walk by.

Shit you reminded me of this fat guy who was a customer when I worked at Gamestop..he wore a cape was like my age and came in with his mom and he smelled like shit he always bought bargin bin fantasy games from the PS2 bin...he was not clinicly mentally handicapped or anything but I did sorta feel bad for him at the same time he annoyed me because of his smell and always yelled when he talked and he talked a lot....customers left when he came in.

Mike Markkula: Steve Wozniak's employee number one, you're number two.
Steve Jobs: Wait a minute. I'm employee number one. Woz?
Steve Wozniak: Doesn't matter to me.
Steve Jobs: I'm employee number one around here.
Mike Markkula: I'm not saying anything. I wasn't implying anything.
Steve Jobs: All right, then I'll be zero. Woz you can be number one. I'll be zero. okay?

Ballmer: Oh yeah, like you go around reading Plato! You're the only guy I know who can make furniture out of Playboys. Look, you got enough to make a chair. You don't have to worry about 'em moving around, 'cause they're all stuck together
[laughs]
