View Full Version : Have you ever truly hated a game that was a critical hit?

Because I hate Gears of War. Borrowed it from a friend and I gotta say... it's awful. Like truly, gut-wrenchingly, terrible? The controls are clunky, the story is horrid, the dialogue is insipid, the characters are ridiculous stereotypes, and it's just plain not fun to play. How the eff is this a hit? After trying desperately to choke an iota of fun out of this mess for about an hour, I went back to re-playing Crackdown.
Not the first time this happened to me. I'm told there are people who think the Ninja Gaiden disc is good for something other than a coaster or a frisbee. I found the game on the disc to be button-mashy excrement, with no depth at all to the combat. (You hit while the CPU blocks, then the CPU hits while you block. Rinse, Repeat.) I bought Ninja Gaiden Black, thinking that some of the game play issues would be cleared up, but in my opinion that was just an exercise in turd-polishing. (I quote the poet laureate Oran "Juice" Jones: "You can pour syrup on s**t, but that don't make it pancakes.")
On the other hand, the game I've had the most fun with on my 360, by far, was the previously mentioned Crackdown, which got decent reviews, but nowhere near as good as the reviews for Gears of War, Ninja Gaiden, etc. It's gotten to the point where I wonder if I should pay any attention to game reviews at all. Is it just me?

Well, I know that in the end you gotta go with what YOU think is a good game or just do a bit more research. I definitely know that Gamespot sucks when it comes to game reviews. IGN is usually a little better.

I do remember one IGN editor, I think it was one of the Wii team guys, mentioning that he thought Ninja Gaiden was awful. Not overly-difficult, which a lot of people say, but just a bad game. And it was a light bulb moment for me because I was like "Oh, it's not just me!"
But I've looked around and I can find barely a negative word about Gears of War. What everybody loved the most about the game was what I hated: the game play. It's just boring. Granted I'm only an hour in, but it's the most boring level design I've seen in a triple A title. Compare the first hour of GOW with the first hour in Half-Life 2 or Call of Duty or Halo. It just doesn't measure up. And granted, I have a standard definition TV, but that can't be the only reason I cannot, for the life of me, tell the difference between the guys on my team and the aliens I'm supposed to be fighting. Every second of playing this game for me was a second I wanted to be spending doing something else. But it's like the best reviewed game for the 360!
And while I'm digging a hole here, I also gotta say I don't get Smash Brothers. And I'm a fighting game guy. Played that on the Gamecube for about an hour, and that was enough for a lifetime for me. (Though I do plan to try out the Wii version.) Maybe I just have to face the fact that I'm a weirdo.

I think everyone has their moments, and it always depends on whats going on. Some more memorable ones for me:
- Gran Turismo 4: What in the bloody hell happened? I absolutely loved 2 and 3, and I was so eager to buy 4 with all of the press hype and all of my friends getting it. It just felt like Gran Turismo 3.5, with slightly more polished graphics, and otherwise no improvements. Nothing but shining reviews as I recall, and that is not to say that it didn't deserve them (because it is still the pinnacle of racing titles), but my God it really wasn't that good. I think Forza and PGR have ruined me for life.
- Ninja Gaiden: Maybe I'm not "hardcore" enough to appreciate the game, but I don't think I've had as frustrating of an experience as I did with that game in any other. I literally threw my controller at the floor several times in absolute anger, it just felt like a "broken" game to me. Maybe I "don't get it," but it just wasn't anywhere close to what all the hype had suggested.
- Metal Gear: I've never liked it. I don't know why. I don't know what I can say other than that. I should like it, I loved Splinter Cell and the like, but I just can't get it right with the MGS titles.

That could be because of the whole 'lives' thing and it being more about knocking people off the edge than getting rid of their health - it's a pretty unique system in a rather stale genre (but that's coming me as a massive fan of the game). As with any game, it takes a little bit of time to get a feel for the intricacies, and it's also a much better game with four people playing - I don't know what you did with it but if it was the single player or even just one on one it's not the same.

How the eff is this a hit?
Did you play co-op? I never had fun playing the game alone, but with a friend it's much more fun. I understand what you mean about the controls being clunky. They are very odd, and feel almost sluggish at first. Once you get the hang of it, the game feels fine. It has a slow enough pace that the controls work with the gameplay. I recommend trying to play co-op before making a final judgment on the game.
I hated Ninja Gaiden the first few times I played it. I agree with you that the game was just attack, block, attack, over and over again. It was difficult and boring. A couple of my friends kept telling me how much fun they were having with it, so I kept playing it. I wanted to figure out what they saw in the game. I don't know how it happened, but one day the combat system just sort of clicked with me. I was always playing it like it was just a normal fighting game. Turns out the game is way more fun and far less difficult if you just kick ass. Blocking is almost completely unnecessary.
I never understood the allure of the Metal Gear Solid series. That's another game I kept playing because I thought maybe there was something I was missing, but there isn't. I think the games are complete shit. Even if I didn't think the game mechanics were dull, the stories are so insipid that I'd rather watch an Uwe Boll movie.

Rainbow Six 3 (and on)
aside from that, I don't think I 'hate' any game, but there are a number of them I didn't like that people rave about. I have Gears of War for pc, wasn't a big fan, though I did finish it. Didn't like Half-Life 2 Episode 2 either (I'm really not a fan of 'defend this spot' sequences...that one had at least 3, HL2 had one I dreaded too.)
Bascially, I'm more interested in story and progressing in a game than any 'challenge' of a battle...Gears of War seemed more about endurance of constant battle than any real story (and requiring three headshots most of the time on some of the enemies didn't help me to like it at all)...and don't get me started on respawning enemies.

THANK YOU!!! And people say Japanese RPG's are tedious! At least in a Japanese RPG I don't have the possibility of going a HOUR w/o seeing a person or enemy. The game is pretty, massive, open ended and that's it. Clunky controls, glitchy gameplay and an unrealistic story mixed with an awful combat system, level system, magic system, weapon and armor system.

I've heard that opinion on Gaiden, that it's fun once you get really good at it, but IMO there's something wrong with a game that takes many, many hours of play before it's any fun at all. Plus, the levels in that game are just ugly to look at. It needed a continuous world, but instead it played like the PS1 Resident Evil on some levels. Don't get me started.

I thought Mario 64 was not all that enjoyable.
I really have no idea why despite disliking the game, I owned it on N64 and DS and completed it on both. I really didn't see the fun in replaying the same levels over and over again to collect 8 sodding red coins or to try for another star. It was a bloody chore.
True it revolutionised platformers and 3D games in general, but for me, was it fun... nope. (Having said that I do like Mario galaxy)

On an opposite note, I know a lot of people despised Assassin's Creed even though it got a good rating, and I loved the game...I could understand what everyone on here and the TRS guys were saying, but I really enjoyed it.
Devil May Cry 4 is getting some flack as well, I am enjoying it but think the level up system is crap, and when you finally get to play Dante he should be a bad ass, but he's at level 0 and you have to start all over. *grumble* I know that the DMC games are purposefully made for replay though. Just like any Capcom or Konami game.

I'm with Chepito and Jsatt. I've given BioShock a few attempts to grab my attention. It just doesn't do it for me. Maybe I wasn't enamored with the 360 controls and I'd prefer it on my PC, but I doubt it.
I suppose Oblivion is on my list too. I loathed Morrowind and it's creaky combat. I had high hopes for Oblivion and while combat was better, it still felt clunky. I suppose I'm not a huge fan of first person melee games and I know there was a third person view available in ES4:O, but that felt awkward too.

I know that I'm probably going to caught endless amounts of flak for this, but this is the whole point of the thread to begin with.
I could never derive any fun of any form from the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask. I always felt the gameplay to be overly simplified and shallow with the various temples being bland and endlessly tedious. I couldn't get into the storyline and have always had a hard time getting over the fact that a kid is supposed to be the one saving the world. That being said, I did enjoy the later parts of the game as adult Link, although all of the same gameplay issues remained. If I had to rate it I would probably give it a 6 out of 10, maybe a 6.5. To me, it was a huge letdown after hearing all the hype about it from friends at the time and overall, a fairly bland experience without any of the character and gameplay depth I enjoy.

Ok, I'm pretty sure people are going to think I'm nuts, but I couldn't stand playing super mario galaxy. First off, the game starts of with ridiculous amounts of text. That was one strike. I also found the gameplay was really annoying. It was all pretty much the same, waggle wiimote to spin, jump on dazed enemy, collect stars. Same thing over and over again. Strike two. And the most annoying thing I hated about it were the spherical worlds. It just seemed like the developers seen too many episodes of guko on king kai's planet in dragon ball z and thought it'd be cool to make a game just like that. Strike 3. I think I collected 10 stars then couldn't take it anymore.

First, welcome to the forum...Second, I don't think we ridicule here...We are all like minded in a way and respect everyone's opinion, unless they are being negative/annoying.
I agree to an extent with your feelings about the N64 Zelda games...to me, they felt a little rushed and unpolished for being a part of the franchies. I am probably one of the minority that think Majora's Mask was better than OoT.
My question is how do you feel about the last few Zelda's that have been put out...I personally think that Wind Waker was under appreciated b/c people thought it looked "kiddie," and Twilight Princess was a perfect masterpiece in my book, the last battle alone was worth every dime. I've also played the Minish Cap which was very good, and Phantom Hourglass (a bit tedious).

Yes. You are correct. Eff Mario Galaxy.
I can see why it's good...but...as I come to realize that I've never beat a mario game in my life..it's because...i don't find them engaging enough to finish.
Mario is so difficult to control. in n64 and in galaxy. Especially in Mario 64. not to say that he's difficult to control in the senes that he doesn't fell good to control, but there are so many moments where you just want to turn and when mario turns around he turns all the way around in a semi circular motion. Which justmakes you fall off stuff. Gravity between different platforms pull you in so many unpredictable ways.
I dunno.../sigh

Plus, the levels in that game are just ugly to look at. It needed a continuous world, but instead it played like the PS1 Resident Evil on some levels. Don't get me started.
I didn't get really good before I started to enjoy it. I just started playing it differently. I became fed up with how boring the combat was, so I just started slashing, evading, jumping off walls and shit with no real purpose or direction, and found that I started having fun and doing better.
I hate when a game isn't fun right off the bat, too (friggin mandatory tutorials in games now days...). If it doesn't grab me within fifteen minutes, I'm probably done with it. If the beginning of a game has horrible design, how am I to believe that it'll get any better? That it'll be worth putting some time into? There definitely is something wrong with a game that makes you do that. However, there can be times when the beginning of a game isn't fun not because of bad game design, but because of bad choices I'm making as a player. Ninja Gaiden bored the hell out of me because I was trying to play it, well, I don't know if incorrectly is the right word-but it was my fault the game sucked. I love CoD4 and Quake, but playing CoD4 like I would Quake would ruin the game.
I guess it could be said that it's bad design to even have the option of playing Ninja Gaiden in such a boring way. Maybe if there was no block button at all it would've been more fun, or if instead of having a block button, a parry button would have to be pressed just as you were being attacked. Shit, think of how hard the game would've been then!
Anyways, I forgot how much I hate the Half-Life games, too. There's just soooooo many boring areas in the games. I feel like if Half-Life was a movie, it would've been a really awesome movie if 2/3 of it had been edited out.

Disagree while WoW is using systems and ideas that have been established in other MMOs like EQ the thing that makes it special is the refinement and polish Blizzard put in to it. Thats why WoW is the monolith it is and will remain that way till WoW 2 or World of Vikings, what ever Blizzard makes next.
Obviously, these are opinions and depend on where you are coming from, but I can tell you honestly that I feel the very opposite of what you just wrote. In my opinion, the systems aren't polished, well though out, or integrated in a smart way. If Blizzard could actually design abstract systems as good as they design rendering and netcode, we wouldn't even have any other games, apart from some MMO that actually tried advancing the genre, but ultimately failed due to Blizzard's marketing.

Can I mention any games that include words 'Tomb' and 'Raider'?
Christ, i hated tomb raider really despised it...
and final fantasy 10 and 10-2 were awful i loved 1-8, 9 was cool but 10 and 10-2 turned me off the FF series for life

EDIT: These are just my opinions, obviously im not stating that these are BAD games just that I disliked them intensly incase anyone gets the wrong impression

Anything Mortal Kombat that's in/on anything other than an arcade cabinet or is a 3D fighter.
Sonic The Hedgehog 1 on the Mega Drive. Sonic 2 onwards is fine, Sonic Adventure I love.
Super Mario Bros. 2
Angry Nintendo Nerd anyone?
On a side note has anyone else seen this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxY8yQRJW08) ?

Most Recently:
Halo 1, 2 and 3:
I just can't get into these games. I don't give a shit about any of the characters the game play feels sluggish to me (especially now that i have played COD4) I didn't think the story was that great.
Mass Effect:
Could have been amazing but has to many technical flaws. The texture pop-ins are annoying but i can deal with them. What i cant deal with is all the frame rate problems during combat and the save function. I played it for 2 hours today. I kept trying to save but it wouldn't let me...so i assumed the auto save would cover me. Well it didn't. I ended up getting into a battle where i died and i had to start over from where i was 2 hours previous. I wanted to break the disk in half.
