I use the free version of LinkedIn. Useful? Meh ... not so much, but it has connected me back with guys I worked with 20 years ago.
I wont promote my linkedIn id here, but PM me if you would like a link.
Surprising thing is that I found a common connection between myself and a colleague via different routes that were totally unexpected (I had no idea that they knew each other - especially since one is east coast, and the other west).

I use LinkedIn. I check it a few times a week. Helps me stay in touch with friends and co-workers, but not in a social networking way. More like a way to keep tabs on potential work connections.
I upgraded to the lowest tier of the paid service for a month and didn't see the value.
It did allow me to send an InMail to a friend I'd lost touch with. Other that there wasn't anything I couldn't do with the free version so I downgraded before the next month's payment.
I found LinkedIn really useful when I was interviewing for jobs. It let me check up on my interviewer. Just an added layer of preparation which payed off eventually.
it seems like a 'six degrees of separation' in business type of thing
i joined because i read that bill gates would be posting something about social entrepreneurship and i am interested in combined profit/social ventures
this place is very interesting
i have asked some questions and gotten some really good information
it is very useful very practical people
'met' some interesting people
found a grade AAA corporate lawyer

this place is very interestingI have been reconnecting with former colleagues on three continents. Its funny that we started together at a mega-corp, went in vastly different directions, and have started to reconverge on the same area, but after having picked up hugely different skill sets.
PM me if interested in linking me - I keep the professional stuff seperate from the personal.

i have made two connections with people in the fashion industry
one is an american in japan
both yves st laurent and valentino had long term business partners that is why we know who they are
you could do it too
you gave legitimate talent and skills
you can get someone to back you
you just have to think that way

i started answering some of the questions (it is just like school) :D
then i started asking some questions
i found out that even though you cannot copyright an idea you can patent it
and i connected with a patent attorney in i think the netherlands
you can get free professional information
now i have a good idea what kind of return angel investors would be looking for and in what time frame
and i have an idea of what my 'over the top' website will cost
i have four connections and through them a network of over 100,000 people
three asked to be connected to me and the fourth i wanted to discuss his question with so i got introduced
not everyone who asks do i respond
but as one person i spoke to on the phone said 'you can't be a secret' if you want to do real business
it is practical information much different from school knowledge
i'll pm you soon and add you thx
