View Full Version : Rogers just cancelled The Lab...

From Leo's twitter: "Rogers just cancelled The Lab - reruns will continue until the end of the decade. I'll be ramping up video production from TWiT now." http://twitter.com/leolaporte/statuses/767748113

Who thinks Rev3 needs to hire him and get the ENTIRE gang back together? Well, I can hope.

Since I live in the US I only saw bits and clips on youtube and I have to say I thought Leo's Lab was far better than call for help and I LOOOVED CFH right behind TSS and I guess this was bound to happen as that POS G4 cancled the last anything good and that right there further puts the nail in the coffin of Leo ever working for Rev3 because he already hated the "suits" and working for another company ever again is now 100% out of question and it was never going to happen before anyway.

However there is still some possible good news for rev3 fans out of this,he did say on Twit a while back he would not mind a cameo guest host or something with Pat.

So he has more free time and though still slim he may now consider more heavily doing one show or segment on Tekzilla but as for full time rev3 employee..forget it.

Rev3 and TWIT need to stop dicking around and join forces!!!

Revision3 is doing just fine without him, so I don't see what the big deal is about him staying on his own network.

Honestly, there is a deal. I don't want the community to have to choose over networks. Why can't we all live together in harmony?

Is someone forcing you to choose between networks? Thats the beauty of the internet - its all on-demand!

Not meaning to get into his personal life, but he says it doesn't matter, just for the loss of a paycheck......

Is he well off or something? Rich??

Yes it is "on-demand" but remember that there are only so many $$ out there that sponsors are willing to part with. Advertisers have a lot of options today in regards to where they spend their $$.

Leo is VERY jealous of Kevin's success. Its apparent if you listen to TWIT everytime Kevin is on, or Digg/Revision3 is brought up. When Leo asked Patrick Norton if it was "weird" working for Kevin after they helped "bring him up" Patrick replied, "I don't mind working for smart people"

I also think its funny that Leo says hes going to be focussing on video...whenever people talked about Revision3 on TWiT, Leo said people don't want video, they want audio!

I suppose I wish him the best, but I was never a huge Leo fan.

Hey, I would never insult Leo! How can you say such a thing? All these guys have success. Everyone can be wrong sometimes, and I see no reason for you to 'say' that Leo is jealous. Thats a comment from you and not Leo. Actually I would say Leo is proud of Kevin, why shoud Leo be jealous? He has given the gift of interest of technology to all of us. Kevin on the other hand has helped us to continue that. Both Leo and Kevin are great people.

ryudo

I don't see it as a jealousy thing I see it as an age difference generation gap thing as one has one style and era they came from both are fairly different.

I think the only person who really is upset with kevin is John since Kevin never showed up for his last scheduled appearance on Cranky Geeks with out explanation.

It's bullshit saying that Leo isn't jealous. I'm jealous of Kevin Rose.

From a simple idea to making $63mil in 18 months, who isn't?

I think the reason why they cancelled the Lab with Leo is probably because the mass has hopefully learnt that the internet is the only help they need. ( Not to say that I didn't enjoy the show - I live in Sweden. Judging by the clips of YouTube, the set was awfull, most of the times he didn't even have internet access, which makes it the networks fault, not his)

TWiT is presumably giving him enough money to pay the bills, buying groceries, and continuing on his obsession with gadgets.

Once again - It's bullshit to say that you're jealous of someone who made it!

So can anyone run me by this. Kevin still owns Digg right? so how does he have 63 million dollars?

Kevin never made 60$ million.
That was BS by the mag and Kevin has often put down that BS.

Who knows?! If you've followed Martin Sargent and his shows, you've probably seen pictures of him appearing on "web 2.0". Millionaire kid or something like that.

He probably lost a lot of money in the Yahoo/google/apple stock ( I sure hell did).

*cough* earning money back on a chinese company. I'm telling ya, Invest in china*cough*

Yet again I say Kevin said himself both on diggnation multiple times and on Twit HE NEVER MADE 60$ MILL.

It ended up being an out of context quote that got twisted around into making everyone think he became a millionare when in reality he didn't.;)

ryudo

From Wiki
Kevin explained that Digg is still not a profitable website (at the time of the article), stating, "I still have to save up for a couch", though Rose hoped it would be in the near future once Digg establishes the right advertising partnerships. The '$60 million' stated by BusinessWeek was obtained by assessing the value of Digg.com and taking Kevin's 30-40% ownership.

Basically it was just Business Week making a guess at what digg was worth if he sold it but they twisted it into putting a quote on the front page to sell the magazine.

Ok, he hasn't sold Digg yet but when he does he'll get his $60 million. Same thing practically, hes sitting on a gold mine.

Then I apologize.

Still, it would be totally kick ass owning digg =)

I hear the jealousy at times too. I think the real problem is that Leo just doesn't get Kevin's rock star status among his fans. Ryudo is right, its just a generational thing.

That aside, TWiT focusing on video would be AWESOME, especially if it were, say, live video? Can anyone say call-in-show?

I find it redicilous how you get offended by us talking about Leo being jealous off Kevin Rose. Stop bitching. We all miss the Screen Savers...

I'm a big fan of Leo. I really like his podacast's.
But, people have a right to speculate, especially in forums :)

techliveadmin
03-07-2008, 11:49 PM
This sounds alot like backbiting against Leo. Backbiting is simply saying something behind someones back, knowing they wont like it if we said it in front their faces. Even if it is true, it's not right.

Slander? yes. Don't claim he is jealous. Many people 'speculate' and it just ends up hurting all.

Bitching? - I don't insult anyone, Leo got me interested in Tech and Kevin is actually pretty cool to me. They both are kinda like people whom I look up to. Kevin appeals to me because hes like of my generation.

Leo appeals me to because he is knowledgable and understanding. He breaks stuff down for the simpler folk.

BTW, no one has a right to speculate about other people, about games, music and movies, YES. People, NO!

Check out practically all the Revision3 bashing in the TWiT.TV forums. It's ridiculous. I also hate when Leo says that they can't remake the Screen Savers without him. Who says so? He wasn't there the whole time and they didn't just stop the show because he left.

I have to admit... I find this a terrible loss to Technology TV programming. It means the only "Made-In-Canada" solution we have is "Dotto On Tech" and that guy is fucking useless. The Lab will be missed as it is one of the LAST watchable shows on G4techtvCanada that isn't animated. We'll miss you Leo.

Fuck Ted Rogers. Never liked that douchebag in the first place. It's SKYDOME and will always be SKYDOME.

But, people have a right to speculate, especially in forums :)

You'll discover here (http://revision3.com/forum/showpost.php?p=12218&postcount=1), that you actually have some pretty well defined boundaries on how much you may actually speculate.

I think Leo's stuff is first class, I also like some of the Rev3 stuff but Im not a fan of Kevin. Nothing personaly against him and he has done well by taking Slashdot's idea and putting a user edit/contribute/vote twist on it. Sometimes all it takes is someone to see beyond what is already there, imagine if ARS, Toms Hardware or HardOCP had done it at the right time.

I have to say that I haven't been watching the show consistently on TV. G4TechTV is a weird channel that struggles to find an audience.

I hope Leo finds his voice on the web, and his new Saturday Night Live Tech Show idea.

Why didn't I watch it on TV? With podcast and on demand I can't stand appointment TV shows, On demand is the new black.

It takes all the patience I can muster to resist throwing my iPod through my car's windshield when Leo speaks during Security Now. He continuously interrupts Steve and he completely butchers it when he tries to reiterate Steve's points. Just listen and count the number of times you'll hear Leo say "...interesting" or "...well that's too bad". If I had enough time, I'd edit him out of the podcast entirely before I loaded it on my iPod. Would prolly help my blood pressure, too. The content is great and incredibly educational. Leo's commentary is not.

Leo Laporte: Jack of everything, Master of nothing (well, maybe broadcasting. The guy's got a good grip on that. And a voice like butta).

Leo's not my favorite person and I think it would be foolish to bring him anywhere near Revision3. It would be a culture clash and just all-around bad. Rev3's young and fun and really, really smart. Leo's old, goofy, and just FUCKING ANNOYING. There's just no way. It would not work. I mean, I get it -- most of the Rev3 hosts used to work with Leo before on TechTV, etc. And some might think it would be nostalgic to hire the old geezer and put his mug on camera again. It would suck. And deep down, you know that's true.

Leo's perfect for the Geek Cruise crowd. Where tech gods such as the Video Professor keynote and explain Cut/Copy/Paste to the hordes of new computer users.... And there's nothing wrong with that. But he would be entirely out of place on Rev3.

There's a reason The Lab got canceled. Let Leo roll his own video on his own website. But keep him the hell away from Rev3.

I like Leo but I can respect someone not liking certain hosts because everyone is entitled to have their own opinion.
The highlighted bit...don't EVER EVER EVER EVER try and speak for me or others as if your opinion is the only one that is true that my friend is more annoying than anything to me.
I also feel much of your post intentially flaming and insulting where it didn't need to be.
If you don't like him fine but that post was WAY too harsh and over the line.
