View Full Version : Revision3 on broadcast television?

I have been noticing a trend that more and more shows are conforming to. The "hour" shows are running around 40-45 minutes and the "half-hour" shows in the 25 minute range. Now, those numbers are exactly what you'd expect from a show on broadcast television because of the time needed for commercials. Plus, the interstitial advertising in Rev3 shows already cuts them into "segments." So, is it just me, or does anyone else think that Rev3 is priming their shows to be on the TV?

I think there just adopting the more traditional format. I figure that maybe the sponsors have their own pre-made ads that they want to run during the rev3 shows. Adopting a more traditional format would make it easier to find a spot to place an ad. Then again maybe a cable network bought a few syndication rights for a some of the shows. I noticed many shows on rev3 only show ads before and at the end of the program and shows keeping that format don't really need a uniform time limit. the Digg Reel and Tekzilla however show ads in the middle of the program and probably benefit from a more traditional format.

Why would you want to put the future of content put on a dying model?
Traditional TV is dying.

the actual tv is still useful to view internet content but the broadcast tv medium is essentialy history

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it doesn't say anywhere on site site that "Tekzilla is a one hour show", or "internet superstar is a 30 minute show".
It doesn't really matter if a show is 25 minutes instead of 30. The content is suitable for time being. Making a 5 minute segment to a 10 minute is just bad, especially if everything worth knowing can be said in those 5 minutes.
Waste of bandwidth. Sure, it would be cool for us, keeping us busy for the extra 5 minutes, but not worth it - financially.

I recall saying, months ago, that I was worried that they were trying to emulate traditional TV.
Part of the reason I love the shows so much is they're NOT formatted like traditional TV (and the ones that head in that direction, I stop watching.)

I disagree. It's changing but I wouldn't say it's dying. How many other sites are there such as Revision3 and what is their target audience? How many non geeky people do you honestly know that are using bit torrent to get their shows? Hell, iTunes is the easiest thing to use in the world and I can say I honestly only know a few people that use it to get television shows (and to my understanding- this isn't a common accurance). Traditional TV is most definitely changing but its way too early to say it's dying.

it has been dead for me since september 2001
i got tired of seeing those towers go down so i gave my tv away
actually that is the second time if gave my tv away the first time was when i started college as a music major - i figured it would be hard to be truly creative if all the information in my mind was exactly the same as everyone else
i hate tv except for bbc tv now they got tv right everyone else failed imho of course

What he said.
We're moving into an age where DVRs and Apple TVs will become common place, but we're still far from it. Traditional TV is far from dead. The millions of people tuning in each night tell me so. I'm a geek, and I still rely on traditional TV for my television, and my VCR to catch anything I miss.

Does that count as + or - geek cred points?
In my opinon:
Setting up a VCR: Always +
Relying on TV an VCR to catch shows as opposed to a DVR: I think thats a -...
I'm from the school of "It'll be on the torrents so I'll grab it there" because I don't actually own a TV... but that's just me.

I refuse to torrent.
Edit: Not because its illegal or immoral or anything. I just don't like it. Takes a lot of time and effort when I could just record it, or wait for DVD. I do download music.

The distribution model is changing and Rev3 is pioneering that. TV's are far from dead but intenet on your TV is a reality now and is certainly the future. I feel that is the future and the traditional model of how shows are done and commercial breaks is being rewritten to fit the format for the internet. But you can download several podcasts right now with a Tivo or AppleTV. As those devices become more comman place, and as the xbox or PS3 transforms into a full media center I think we're going to find what Rev3 is doing will become the norm for several niche markets.
I don't want Rev3 to be it's own channel on TV because I don't want them to have to compete with that crap. If they did it would certainly go the way of TechTV because, lets face it, the big corporate heads just don't get it. Hats off to Jim, Jay, and everyone else in the decision position at Rev3. I love what they're doing and I wouldn't change it, enhance as their doing, but don't change it.

It'd be hard to coordinate the times of these shows. The shows I watch from Revision3 can be 15 minutes longer so I'd say they were not trying to be broadcasted. But Kevin Rose seems to want to mimick these shows with that gimmick of him skateboarding; the logo looks bad and it is just amateurish. I'm glad they moved the Revision3 logo to the top right corner cause it was annoying at the bottom.
because, lets face it, the big corporate heads just don't get it
they look at things in a rear view mirror
they can't project into the future
in the music industry they have finally admitted that their business model is broken and they don't know how it fix it
in 2003 i told my music business teacher everything would migrate to the net
and he thought i was wrong
i couldn't believe it
it was beyond obvious
i could tell them how to fix it
but it won't be cheap
