From the Telus perspective

Spet. 15th 2008 it will be shut down. They have customers a little more of a look-ahead at the shutdown time.

I fear it will become what is probably happening in the states, where companies that use Faxing, are no longer able to do so.

The popular Motorola Fax/Data interface box was a HUGE commodity in Canada for a long LONG _LONG_ time, and is now going the way-side.

There is yet to be a "reliable" digital alternative, over cellular networks, to replace such a device... It doesn't look like there will be a readily available, or even (free) alternative to corporations and oil companies in the future.

I have not seen ANY kind of device, and all my internal questions have been ignored from inside Telus. I cannot get any information on such a device, and I have given up looking as of NOW.

Here is the problem. Analog receives in a series, line by line, data bit by data bit.

Digital doesn't. That's why you get digitization. It re-assembles things at the end. However, the fax machines on the other end aren't used to this (whereas a cell phone is), so either it totally doesn't work, or you miss vital pieces of information.

The first company that comes up with a digital (or other means of global coverage) fax solution (other than VoIP) wins. You will make KAJILLIONS I am not joking. The oil field wants it, they need it, and as of the 15th of Sept. 2008, they will _NEED_ it...
