Any tips how to make logos involving few colours, text and maybe a simple image?

I was wondering if there is an easy way to do this cheaply (free would be great ;) ) The biggest problem I have is text or image has lots of jaggies.

In inkscape the logo looks great until I export it to a bmp.

Any tips?

Just a thought, but instead of exporting it to .bmp you could always do a screen capture instead. That way it will look just like it did on the screen.

But if this is to be blown up for say a banner or sign you will want to use a vector output instead of Rasterized output to file.

Just a thought!

*Sorry nothing comes close to illustrator, thats partly why its so damned high*

Hi there. I couldn't replicate the problem, as my test exported to PNG without the jaggies... but I'll try to assist...

Without seeing your original files, it's hard to tell what's going on, but "jaggies" usually means you're working in raster. If you've imported (not cut and paste) a raster image into Inkscape (or any vector program), make sure the resolution is high enough. Screen resolution is 72dpi and print should be set to at least 300dpi. If you're going to eventually print your logo, I recommend keeping your logo in vector format (PDF or EPS) and not converting it to BMP.

Also - when saving your file to send off to someone else (like another designer or a printer), make sure you convert your text to outlines. In Inkscape, use the pointer tool to select the text, then choose Path > Object to Path.

Good luck!

ya bizzare I had this problem with previous version of inkscape but I just did a quick drawing and exported.

2 surprises

1. defaulted to png great
2 got no jaggies.

I guess I was a problem in older versions that dosnt exist any more.

So, Im a happy camper.

Thanks :)

now Im just playing with circle shape but I keep getting a pac-man shape :(

When you first click on the circle tool, make sure your Start and End are both 0 or click the Make Whole button. Inkscape will remember the last used settings so once you fix the Start/End points you won't have to mess with them again unless you want to make a Pac-Man.

Thanks... I like happy campers. And it's nice to see more people chiming in on tips and tricks for Inkscape. I think a lot of people will appreciate little tutorials/lessons (including myself)... so if you have 'em, keep posting them.

Ah! I never seen the "Make Whole button"
I have a UMPC and its fun taking pictures then spending sometime just tracing the photos ;)

I have no skill at drawing but this is fun ;)

I have to admit I much prefer Illustrator, but here at work where I have no need to use it, Inkscape is my only option, being free and all. It comes in handy now and again.
