i have xp and vista on 2 different machines . every time i open a file the settings is to details . how do i get it to open all files to the list setting and keep it at that setting ? in the past if i set it to file setting and if i close it , it would go back to details .. this is very annoying

I cannot speak for Vista (It might be the same or similar), but for XP
Open a File window (I use My Computer)
Go to the View menu
Select the view you want (Thumbnails, Tiles, Icons, List, Details)
Go to the Tools menu
Go to Folder Options
Click the View tab
Click the Apply to All Folders button
Click Yes to the message box that pops up.
That should do it.
