MacBook hell?
They didn't mention that.
Question! Why didn't they/you use the GUI version?

If you're going to buy a Vista license anyhow, unless you know that you have software or hardware that's incompatible you should install 64-bit. 4GB or more of RAM is definitely worth it. Games have become so bloated that 2GB RAM isn't enough to keep from having to swap out to disc, etc. It's sad that Microsoft didn't have the nerve to tell Intel "we didn't invent AMD64 and won't you buy an Itanic?" to take their 32-bit-only Core Duo CPUs and Aero-incapable chipsets and get over themselves. Then all Vista installs would be 64-bit and vendors would have a lot less Vista testing to do. It might even have improved Microsoft's testing efficiency to the point that Vista wouldn't be such a steaming pile to this day.
BTW, if you bought a PC or notebook from one of the big OEMs and have a Vista COA (Certificate of Authenticity) sticker, you can replace the stock 32-bit Vista installation with the equivalent 64-bit Vista version (ie 32-bit Premium to 64-bit Premium) legally for free. See this thread: Clean Vista install WITH NO ACTIVATION (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=120228).
Edit: Better yet, install 64-bit Linux, 4GB or 8GB of RAM, and run 32-bit WinXP in a virtual machine if you're not into video-intensive Windows-only apps like gaming. If you're really lucky your Windows apps will go well with WINE (http://www.winehq.org).

macbook hell?
And also, first GoDaddy was a sponsor and we were told they were the best, then Domain.com was a sponsor and "they are the best", now we're back to GoDaddy...

I'd rather trust domain.com, since GoDaddy are a bunch of wusses.
- First they take down ratemycop.com without letting the owner of the site know of it.
- Then the whole myspace incident.

I'm not going to support something that withheld freedom of speech, net neutrality and so much more.
Hope to see suggestions on domain registering/hosting sites :)

Great episode and glad they showed the 360/Apple Tv segment.
And the Macbook Air getting tossed with the newspaper is the funniest thing I have heard in ages and adds another reason to not buy that overpriced thing.
B
So far on Tekzilla I have seen a new Macbook Air have a screen of death and get thrown away mixed with newspaper.
So quite literally your are throwing 3000$ away. haha!
Last note BTW I actually use service called ORB and stream media Wi fi to my Wii and watch it..granted you can't do HD but it is an option.

Another way to watch your favorite Tekzilla episodes is by streaming them via xbmc from a share on your computer.
My current setup uses itunes to store the videos in a network share (on my qnap 209). I can then fire up xbmc and stream the show via wireless to my big screen tv.
Also another way would to to use Twonky Media
I wish they woudl do a show testing the Ps3 capabilities.

If you've been following tech news you already know that Godaddy.com is no stranger to taking down (without notice to the owner) domains by request of nearly anyone (http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2007/01/worst-practices-online-service-providers).
You don't even need a legitimate legal cause or formal take-down request (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cease_and_desist); but rather, just an angry company (calling, emailing, or writing) that is upset with the content you've posted. Godaddy.com apparently will not stand up for its customers' right to free speech.
In January Godaddy.com took down SecLists.org (http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2007/01/myspace_alleged.html) and recently they took down RateMyCop.com (http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2008/03/godaddy-silence.html).
I recommend that you check out those articles and do your research before you do business with them.
Sure, they have millions of dollars to spend on fancy advertisements (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6930045/), but will they fight for you when someone comes with a DMCA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMCA) sword?
Please give it some thought before you support this sponsor and let's ask the good folks at Revision3 to do some due diligence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Due_diligence) before asking them to be a sponsor on this network.

Roger/Pat,
Dudes, you guys missed Tversity as a solution for streaming to the 360. It's a media server with an rss aggregator that supports multiple platforms. It also transcodes media on the fly. I've been using it to watch all your shows on my big screen for over a year now. It's free too.

WOW! Glad to see Linux get some love!
While your on it, you might want to take a look at "MythTV" ( http://www.mythtv.org/ ). It would also be nice to see more Linux on Revision3 in general. Maybe y'all could get Chris DiBona to do a Linux podcast??? You know how us Linux users are, once a month would keep us happy, weekly would be heavenly :D  Linux is much more n00b friendly now than it was just 2-3 years ago. Here's another link that you should give to people that are using Ubuntu for the first time. It has "cut & paste" commands that makes Ubuntu even easier/better. http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Gutsy Tons of stuff from game emulators to servers, and everything in between. One of the best Linux how-to's I've ever seen!!!

Anyone else having issues registering on m.revision3? I enter my iphone's number and check the box then I get this message "Invalid phone number entered. Please check and try again." I've tried entering it in different formats (1714928 5555, 1 (714) 928 5555, 1-714-928-5555) but I get that same message every time. Even when I try on my laptop I get it. Solutions? or even similar issues?

I wonder why it would work on the iPhone and not the iPod touch?
They're essentially the same platform when it comes to the web..
Hmmm...

Yeah. But most of the mobile sites say they are "iPhone optimized".
Meaning, every device identify itself when visiting a server.
The server then in some cases generates a special site for that device.
I think MacWorld demonstrated a site that was "optimized for iPhone" but didn't show the site on the iPod touch, because it identified itself in a whole another way.
I assume it's a bug. Just watch tekzilla on the small-quick time video?
Maybe not as iPod/iPhone friendly, but does the job.

I have used others and they seem to have no problems...I have used upto 500gig with no issue...but I have found on some older laptop drives you still have to use a normal sized to the laptop drive with power to access them.
Real handy little device...if you find you need to access the data, pop this little baby out and hook it up and you have the old drive and data quickly available...I can normally dump most of what the user needs off to a thumb drive quickly.

A quick way to get an RSS feed to auto-update your podcasts on your 360 that the guys overlooked.
You can install the Zune software (yes even without owning one, who does lol?) and subscribe to its RSS feed, turn on media sharing with it, and your XBox will see the Zune software as a server, you can stream the podcasts through it!
Saves remembering to download manually every week,
Great to see Rog & Pat back together on-screen as well, great episode guys.

Why not just use the GUI install on the Live CD? I think it would be a lot friendlier to people who might be unfamiliar with Ubuntu and it gives people the advantage of being able to try out the OS without making the commitment to install it.
Also, it might be nice to see a new MythTV install. The one they did on Systm a while back is pretty old now.

well, i noticed that, it does run an relatively old machine.
The ubuntu livecd need around 256mb of ram, to run, as it loads the OS into the ram. So anything below that is not recommended.

Blackberrys are hit and miss unfortunately depending on how your administrator or carrier configures their BES server. From our FAQ:
My Research-In-Motion (RIM) cell phone gives me a HTTP 413 Error when I attempt to play back. What is wrong?
Older RIM devices were shipped with a limit of 128K on HTTP/GETs from the browser if the browser is the internet browser. Changing this limit to 1M chunks solves the problem. The default needs to be changed using the BES Management Console - it cannot be done on the phone itself.
By default, the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) limits the response size of a single HTTP response to 128K. If you try to fetch anything bigger the application will receive a 413 (Request Entity Too Large) response code from the server. To get around this you must use the BES management console to change the value of the Maximum number of kilobytes per connection field to a higher value, up to 1024K.
Have your IT department log into the BES Management Console and do the following:
• Locate the MDS_CS properties
• Change the session limit to its max of 1024K. (This can be higher if you wish.)

Should work. I'm watching Diggnation now on iPhone over EDGE (40 minutes). It is a large fil to download, so perhaps your cache is full? You can go to settings --> safari --> cache and clear it .

I use the same method Djoutlaws uses and my content comes in fine. I recommend the large WMV or Quicktime HD. I convert the wmv for my zune and can still watch it on my 360 if I want to. Also this method works with itunes or miro but you have to set your podcast folder as shared in windows media player and share it with your 360. You dont have to use zune to share with 360 unless you want to.

i went to m.revision3.com on safari in iphone and had no problem with it..
as i was watching tekzilla on my computer .. i selected a diggnation episode that was over 43 mins. long (the one with bella.. the diggNdog!! ahah..) after my selection.. i hit the pause button .. let the screen go to black.. finished watchin tekzilla then to my surprise.. the episode was already done downloading.. didnt even know iphone would continue the download after it went to black screen mode.. very cool ... i love this idea.. cause now i dont need my laptop to connect to the internet for my favorite shows!! hope all websites start doing this.. cause youtube gets boring .. and iphone will be my only source for internet and video .. no more comcast for a while
i would like to thank

One RSS reader you forgot is the new cross-platform Amarok. It's more then just a media player as it will download files to a directory you specify and can be set to only keep the most recent version or upto any number you want.
I have it download all my webisodes to my server so I can watch them on my bigscreen with my Mythbox.
The new version that comes with KDE4 will run on all 3 OS's now and it may just convert you to using its' other functions.
And while you are it, why not try K3B for you disk burning needs. :P

I have to say that the mobile streaming is awesome great work. But I have an issue with my iphone after playing vids. When I lock my phone it makes the locking click sound, but it sounds bassy and muffled and distorted.
Only way I can find to restore it to the normal sound, is by going into the ipod settings and change the equalizer from default to anything else, then playing a song, and final then set ipod settings back to default.
Watching every vid put out by revision3, doing the reset once or twice everyday. It gets annoying, but still worth watching. :p

Was it just me, or did Garnett Lee say during the Ubuntu installation: "Friends don't let friends do Ubuntu"?
I suppose we know his opinion on Linux then. :)

It looked like they were possibly doing the ubuntu install in a virtual machine. I as trying to figure out why the mswindows xp screen flashed. It would also have been nice as someone said if they had done the gui version ubuntu install also.
If you run osx, you are getting closer to a unix based system. If you put down linux, you are also putting down os/x also almost sort of.
The people who hate linux and or bsd, usually become it's most fervent supporters. Been there, seen it happen, They have not had time to get to know it yet. I remember back when I first started installing windows95 at work. The secretaries and quite a few of the instructors raised a rant about having to use a mouse. They wanted dos back. We encouraged them to play solitaire so that fear would eventually go away. Excluding people who are command line oriented, not many people would probably want dos now.

TVTonic is a free add on to WMC. You can subscribe to a predefined list of podcasts or from your pc you can add custom ones.
Another option I use is iTunes on my Macbook Pro. I hook it to my tv via a dvi to HDMI cable and watch the podcasts using front row. No need for AppleTV in this setup.
I really wish someone would elaborate on the Macbook hell text which was not covered. As you can tell from my post I use both Vista Ultimate and XBox 360 as well as a Macbook Pro.
Thanks to everyone for other ideas on getting podcasts to the TV!
Now I can see the site (http://m.revision3.com) the same way as the iPhone on my iPod Touch. Thank You for the fix.

Grim, I've had trouble like this on a couple machines, but not many. Most will load up, but there are some video cards that just don't "play nice" with Ubuntu or Linux in general. I'd recommend a couple things if you haven't gotten this figured out already:
>>make a few searches through ubuntuforums.org and/or google. it's gotten me and countless others out of countless tight spots. type your error message in your search, if it gave you one.
>>download vmware server & create a virtual machine or download vmware player & a preconfigured virtual machine from here: http://www.vmware.com/appliances/ Ubuntu *will* run on a virtual machine.
>>backup your data & run the text installer like they said on the show. it can resize your windows partition & install Ubuntu into the unused space.
>>try another version of Linux. there's a lot out there. distrowatch.com can help you find the right one for your level of experience and your system, or they'll at least get close.
>>try a different computer. Aside from using a virtual machine, it's possible Linux just might not work with your particular setup. There are some video cards that just will not work with Linux (ATI historically has been bad about this, but they're getting better). there are also some wireless cards like that, too (my wife's laptop has a wifi card that won't jive).
Good luck! If you're weary of Windows and you can make the switch, you'll be glad you did. I was the same way and I wish I had switched sooner!
P.S.--Just to be sure everyone knows (PATRICK! ;)), Miro works GREAT in Ubuntu. It used to crash a lot, but it works like a charm now.
