I know, this is going to come off sounding like I'm bragging, but most movie fan sites have a thread dedicated to pictures of their DVD collections, there is one in my favorite movie website Joeblow.com . After all, don't we all love DVDs. Geekdrome is, was, and always will be highly movie oriented, so it is only just that we have a thread dedicated to our DVDs and for once in my entire life. I can actually tell another man. Mine is bigger than yours ha ha
seriously though, post up your pictures show everybody what you got. I'm sure Jonathan will have his Men in Black Men and Fudge Pack Mountain.

I know, this is going to come off sounding like I'm bragging...
You have over 1,100 DVDS!
It does sound like bragging.
Personally, I think the drive toward massive DVD collecting is pretty insane. I own about 50 DVDs of movies that a like to watch often. However, I just can't condone collecting thousands of DVDs. I do not have the room to store such a huge collection and even if I shopped from the $10 DVD bargin bin at Walmart I would spent over $10,000 on DVDs. That's at least 50 years of Netflix.
With 1,100 DVDs I could...
...watch DVD movies continuously for three months not counting special features or stopping to eat and shit.
or
... have time to watch about 2 DVDs per week. I would take over 10 years to watch all of them.
Owning that many DVDs is just... insane.... my complements.
Nice TV ... BTW

For those of you who hadn't seen the geek den yet... http://www.hullion.com/images/GeekDen/100_0109.jpg
I think my collection is nearing the 450 point, because I was thinking about getting one of those DVD carousel players that holds 400 DVDs and didn't know how I'd pare my collection back that far. I have shelved that idea for now, because a lot of my titles are 7-disc TV series seasons, which makes my disc count MUCH higher than 400.
Honestly, I'd rather spend $14.95 on a DVD than hire a babysitter, spend $14 on two tickets, $10 on snacks, and sit in a sticky, stinky movie theater. If I don't like the movie, I ebay it, Barterbee it, or whatever. Yeah, I'm a bad movie geek, but you try finding someone you trust with your 8 year old in a new city.
Plus, there's archival factor. Assuming society doesn't fall apart in the next zombie apocalypse, my daughter is one day going to wonder about classic movies like "Footloose" or "My Dad Married an Alien". This way, she can view any movie she likes, just about, for her Thesis on ancient films when she's working on her master's degree. :P

I don't have time for either of these pastimes anymore. However, I'd gladly pay the $17 on tickets $50 on dinner and $30 on baby sitting just to see a movie in the theater.
However, the choice is not between ownership and movies. The choice is between ownership and renting.
For a movie that you'll only watch once in five years, owning just doesn't make fiscal sense. It's about the act of collecting, not saving money.
I DO have a collection of about 50 videos that I really like on a regular basis. I compress them to DiVX and watch again and again while I commute on the train.

Nevertheless, I can't really understand the need to invest thousands of dollars on media that will be obsolete in less than ten years. Your daughter will be able get the super-platinum ultimate directors cut super special absolutely final edition of "My Dad Married an Alien" in superior extended HD. She'll rent the thing.
I think collecting a thousand DVD videos is awesome. However, can only be justified as an irrational passion.

I am with mascher on this. I have collections of stuff I really like - but I rent everything else. I occassionally pick up a bargain bin DVD of a movie I enjoyed once (like Firefox, Point of no Return/La Femme Nikita, etc).
So, my collection is around 50-60 individual titles. Not huge, but as I said, most of my collection lives at the video store ... or increasingly on Movies on Demand on my cable box.

I'm with the people who rent movies, and who'd rather watch them at home than in a movie theater. I used to buy a lot of DVDs, but I'd end up spending cash on a movie that I'd watch once and know I'd never want to see again, then selling it on eBay or my local used record store. Eventually I gave in and realised that it would just be cheaper to rent movies and buy the ones I loved, and watch them a lot. So my collection is actually shrinking as I get rid of ones I no longer want.

no matter what you do or where you are, and i'm in the majority of "i don't buy, i just rent", cause i don't really watch movies THAT many times anyway, and the select few i do, i buy...or borrow from my roommate (he has like 500+ himself), you MUST acknowledge how ****ing AMAZING Zim's collection LOOKS. That and the toys and the tv and the couch and the stools. Ugh. Man. That is awesome.

I've got about 300 DVD's and I thought my collection was impressive. I guess I got put in my place.
I worked at a retail store for two years and got a killer discount on DVD's, especially used ones so about half my collection came from there. I can't afford to buy as many now but I can't help myself sometimes.
I actually just picked up the Transformers Special Edition today and it is sweet.

I refuse to buy film-only DVDs. I'm an extras whore, so I keep a select amount, at around 40, but all of that at least double-disc, or the occasional 1 disc with dozens of extras (like Ghostbusters). I'd rather pay 25-30 bucks for a movie I'll spend several hours on bonus footage for. Yeah, I'm a geek, guess I'ma t home.
Pictures to come later.

I used to do the Columbia House DVD club system, where, if you worked the system correctly, your DVDs worked out to be around $7 each. It got to be a pain after a while though... cancelling memberships and rejoining. So I quit. But that's where a big chunk of my collection came from.
Then hubby got a decent job and just got a raise... plus I sold a few jewelry pieces of my own... so my "allowance" has been raised. That's what got me into buying season sets again.
But just tonight my "archive" reason was given a bit of a boost. It seems my daughter's music class recently played the theme from "Ghostbusters" for some reason... probably because shouting every once in a while is fun for kids... so we watched "Ghostbusters" tonight (she hadn't seen it yet) and she giggled for an hour straight. And she thought the Stay-Puft marshmallow man was the coolest. :D

I've got a bunch of DVD's, most of which I bought while I was in college and spent money for spendings sake. They're all still in the same box they were in when I moved back home 3 and a half years ago though. I just flip through the box and pick the movie I want to see, and when I clean up they just go right back into the box. I think I should get a rack or something.

On the left are my favorite movies, ordered with my most favorite to the left (Back to the Future) and the hilariously awesome action flicks on the right (Armageddon, Transporter 2). And below the awesome $1 Terminator figure I got at Goodwill is the ever growing Arnold DVD collection, again, the most awesome on the left and the worst on the right (I had to get End of Days in order to complete keep up with the man's movies).
