Hey,

I know theres tons of threads and vidcasts about this stuff, and I do promise that I've read/researched fairly extensively and still have some questions and problems. I'm fairly proficient with computers, but I've now spent upwards of 50 hours and wasted enough blank DVD-R's to make me cry. Trying to do this on my own has led to nothing that has turned out right. So I have some childhood friends and it's now that time where were all forced to go off in different directions. I've been saying for a while that I was gonna throw together some funny video stuff for everybody on DVD. The videos range anywhere from my friend getting kicked in the nuts to a few clips from our favorite movies.

Theres 7.99gigs total of videos with about 1782 minutes or 29.7 hours of runtime. There all .avi (I thought It was a good idea at the time) and and I want to put these multiple vids on hopefully 1-2 DVD's but if thats an unreasonable number I'll have to understand. The quality of the vids range from crappy handy-cam to DVD quality, but the overwhelming majority (~95%) land at [352 x 240 resolution, with MPEG Layer-3 Decoder for the audio codec, and DivX Decoder Filter for the video codec], I really don't care about the DVD stuff suffering as long as it's all still viewable. Thats really as extensive as I'm worried about. I've never really done this kind of video converting before(I've done nothing out side of basic opensource converts and ripping/”dvdshrink”ing/burning) so I'm hoping you guys might be able to help. I'm looking for this to be played on a Standard Definition TV from an ordinary DVD player....but I'm really starting to get desperate and I'll settle for the ability to be played in another computer just by dropping it in the drive ( I'm fairly tech savvy, but these guys get confused using a microwave). Also I'm willing to leave out everything thats not in :352 x 240 resolution, with MPEG Layer-3 Decoder for the audio codec, and DivX Decoder Filter for the video codec. There doesn't need to be chapters, I'd like to be able to, but I'm completely willing to splice them into 1 or 2 (depending on how many DVD's need to be used) full start to finish videos. I figure that depends mostly on the program used.

Which brings me to the last part of this now epic question (Sorry). I'm an incredibly broke and unemployed med-student. Which means that unfortunately I'm looking for Freeware. I'd like opensource suggestions because I have no money and don't forsee myself doing something like this again anytime soon. I'm willing to use programs that add a watermark in the corner because those can be relatively ignored. You can recommend any pay programs you want, I most likely won't buy them but, I'll spend a lot of time trying to finding a good replacement. I have no problems using multiple programs to get the end result (as long as there not multiple pay programs).

Absolutely any advice/programs/tutorials/websites/directions you can point me in would help. I hope I've explained it well enough that any questions are answered (But I'm sure I'll check back near hourly to answer anything I can). This project is very important to me; I need to see this get done and I'm getting desperate. Just incase your wondering/concerned I'm not using any shady videos, unless u count my friend getting booted in the crotch.

On a side note,(or maybe in hopes of convincing you I'm not just posting for quick help and running) I love the Rev3 community and have been avidly watching multiple vidcasts and occasionally trolling the message boards (even if I don't participate very often) since the birth of Diggnation and with it the Rev3 network. Thanks again for any help you can give.
