I saw the viewer email about this on the last episode, and I actually ran into this dilemma myself around 1 month ago.

Most people will tell you to pull audio from the headphone jack, and use a normal charger at the same time. This is not the way to go as the headphone jack is already amped by the iPod. You want your car stereo doing the amping with line-level audio, like you get from the docking connection.

Here is what I did, and I think it works great.

Product 1: http://www.sik.com/imp.php
This will plug into your dock connection for charging and also provide a (female) 3.5mm of line out audio.

Product 2: http://www.radioshack.com/sm-belkin-7-ft-3-5mm-to-dual-rca-y-adapter--pi-2263428.html
This plugs into the 3.5mm line-out and converts it to dual RCA, to be plugged into the auxiliary ports in my stereo.

It works out like this... with less terrible paintbrush work.

I set my ipod to keep the display always lit and velco it to my dash.
