Include Nice, Rome, Athens, and Venice. Create a trip itinerary for one for the summer of 2009, between one and two months.

Aaaaaaannnnnndddddd...GO!

Treat it like a game. I'm going nowhere.

FWIW - I am a huge fan of bus tours. Sure, the better ones have a large number of retirees on them, but as a way of seeing the most in a country that you possibly can in a short period of time, they are brilliant. You just don't do all the "optional excursions", and go adventuring by yourself.

Case in point, while the rest of our tour group were grabbing sandwiches at a local cafe in Munich, my wife and I ducked off to the Hoffbrau Haus fro an early lunch. I don't normally drink beer before noon, but made an exception in this case ... ditto in Pompei were everyone went to a tourist restaurant for lunch, but wife and I took off down a side street and found the best napolese pizza we have ever had.

My wife and I have been doing them since we were about Aria's age. They are a LOT of fun.
