View Full Version : Large Male Fan Base

I don't understand why there is such a large base of male fans for this show. Looking through the post I noted only about five non-staff female posters and one dad and daughter post. I'm 18 and my dad introduced me to the show. I saw the second episode first. I like this show because I can actually understand most of this stuff. My dad watched the screensavers on tech tv and I could do with Patrick and Leo, but any of the guys beyond them never really got through to me.

A show full of intelligent and attractive women...covering fun and interesting things...no idea. ;>

I don't think the gender of the hosts really matters... as long as the show is informative and entertaining, I'll watch. Contrary to popular belief, not all guys are chauvinists. :)

Hey FanGirl,
We're thrilled to have you on board! I suspect that there are a lot more of you who just haven't spoken up. Now Lord knows I love me some male fans, but I'm really excited to open the forum up to everyone. So welcome, and make sure to let us know what you want to see in upcoming eps!

chauvinist

1. Militant devotion to and glorification of one's country; fanatical patriotism.
2. Prejudiced belief in the superiority of one's own gender, group, or kind

I think you're whipped.
I don't think anyone here thinks they are the superior gender nor just watches just for pretty girls...if all they wanted was just pretty women I think they would be watching other things that are a bit more r rated and learn nothing.

I think they are watching because it's a great show and having beautiful smart women is just a bonus.

I don't really understand why you are getting defensive about this, in all honesty. I believe you just made the same point I did... that people are watching the show because of quality, and regardless of gender. I, in fact, used the word chauvinist correctly and I don't understand why you are highlighting its definition and linking to a useless clip. Maybe you do not understand the operative word 'not'? And that smiley face following the post underscores the fact that it isn't exactly meant to be taken with serious intent.

edit: If you wish to continue this conversation however, PM me. No reason to take this post into off-topic-land-otopia and take away valuable forum space :D

Forget about us all being male... I'm just stoked we got ourselves a f'n BASE!

All we need now is a headquarters... or a LAIR... or maybe a Batcave!

Oh this is gonna be good...

Would it be coined BLaH (Batcave Lair and Headquarters)?

I myself haven't gotten into the show but I could see why male folk would.

Well, Rev3 itself has always had a large male fan base. Also, you can't really go off of the forums as a representation of the fanbase. There might be tons of girls that watch the show, but just not using the forums.

Practically took the words out of my mouth (or off of my keyboard in this case). I'd only add the adjective: "hot," right before the geeky girls part.

Looking at hot girls just for the sake of that is okay in small doses, but to watch hot girls that are also smart and geeky. Well that's just like a slice of heaven there.

That said, I do wonder if the high estrogen factor of this show might be letting it get away with things other Rev3 shows can't get away with.

That is to say: all the posts on this forum have been very cordial, including the criticisms (seriously; compare this to the systm, or tekzilla boards). I'm hoping it's because the show has been good so far, and not just because of all the girls on camera (i.e. fans afraid to hurt the girl's feelings).

Oh well, the real test is going to be when we get a bad popSiren episode (statistically one can't fire on all cylinders every time).

As long as the forum fans are willing to tear into the show for its missteps the same way that they do other shows at Rev3, there shouldn't be much to worry about.

If you think that we're being cordial because of the estrogen on the show, you should read the criticisms over the Rev 3 Gazette, and the Digg Reel.

The first show was hosted by Sarah, the second by Jessica. Both were equally ripped hard.

Also, don't forget that Tekzilla used to have Jessica as a co-host.

That being said, the ladies have put together a great show in PopSiren. Informative, fun, and interesting to watch. The bloopers at the end of the credits are also a fun additive.

the thing i love most about the show is you see the girls have fun making it. I enjoy the interviews, love the DIY stuff, Kiki's just plain awesome and Heather's just so far out there that it's intoxicating.

BTW I'm so building a fire-tube for my next BBQ, thanks Kiki =D

I admit they are pretty hot. They have all the hot girl specs.. But I don't really find myself very much attracted to them. If anything Dr. Kiki is the hottest. But for me, they couldn't even begin to compare to say, Morgan Webb. And I'm not even talking about what g4 has made her do, but go to youtube and type in, Morgan Webb Gets Caught Off Guard. How Adorable

I think Dr. Kiki is awesome. I just have trouble getting into the "Mr. Wizard" segments. I just a personal thing though. I think Dr. Kiki has a delightful on screen presence and her delivery is funny and entertaining. I just don't think they had me in mind when they included the segment.

It returns me to a point in my life when I was an awkward freshman physics major who has never even touched a woman. Twelve year of college, two graduate degrees, two kids and tenure as a college professor later... I don't like being reminded I was such a disaster.

I throughly enjoy the rest of the show.

Okay so I had to wikipedia "Mr. Wizard", clearly before my time. Although not by too many years.

I agree that Dr. Sanford's presentation / delivery is superb. Admittedly I do pick up some info from her segments, actually they are great. I especially liked the segment on ear balance + demonstration because it was new to me. At least in my opinion the "Rad Science" segment needs to be increased in length and perhaps allow for a little bit more depth to the subject. I think the current approach is good in that it can be understood by almost "anyone". But it would be great if after giving a short introduction so that "anyone" can say "Thats Cool", to a more detailed explanation thats less "Mr. Wizard" like and more like a crop from a lecture done by a really fun professor (they do exist, I know from experience). The current presentation is indicative of Dr. Sanford's ability to achieve the aforementioned. (although I agree with Masherscf on the "Bill Nye or Mr. Wizard format" I must say that the "Rad Science" is my favorite part of the show.)

Although I like to stay caught up on almost everything I much prefer to leave a show knowing something new and not just tiny bits and pieces of something. But I am not suggesting that you break up the popSiren flow / formula too much, I mean I am not asking for Nova. Nor should it jump to say Grad lvl solid state physics that perhaps Masherscf would appreciate / comprehend.

After watching the most recent episode of Tekzilla, a show that thrives on really short bits and lots of ad filler, I hope that popSiren will continue to move away from this model ( to be harsh I dare say really common tech knowledge that almost any geek should know . . . the danger of course being that it isn't given in a complete enough manner for a beginner geek, i.e. David said "... lead solder, if you value your life you won't use", okay so not so obviously he is talking about almost pure lead solder?, if that exists, but they should have mentioned that 60/40 is 60% Sn, 40% Pb ).

(being pedantic) It seems to me that Sarah and Jessica express to the audience that the material presented in "Rad Science" is way over their heads. If it really is then fine, but I feel that it might be discouraging to young viewers, i.e. you might be "roll models". Your show is targeted at a female audience and considering the pathetically low numbers of girls in science and engineering its probably best if you don't show an ignorance towards science at least for their sake and for your roll model status. Oh and that reminds me, although you didn't really have bleach in that spray bottle, you really should have been wearing safety goggles, I mean you are pretending to spray bleach! Now I don't think anyone wants sodium hypochlorite in their eyes.

I agree. First I should say that I already have an understanding of how the LEDs work and what happens when electrons change state. I've had classes in college where we discussed these things. That being said (shout out to the Totally Rad Dan), I felt like Kiki did a really good job at explaining it in simpler terms to where almost anyone could understand it. Sarah and Jessica's reactions, whether real or not, actually kind of made me think that perhaps the average girl won't even understand the simple version. I've met plenty of girls in college that I would consider "dumb blonde" types, that have turned around and have aced upper division science classes. So, perhaps those girls aren't "average"

I watch because I was a TechTV fan... and to have Sarah AND Jessica hosting is like WOH! ... then add Dr Kiki, Heather and Neha all doing their thing... it all adds up to a very nice package.

It's not just about them being pretty girls (doesn't hurt) but it's about the content and the presentation/production value... so far in every episode I have learned something cool.

That pretty much sums it up. At the end of the day, if the content wasn't good, the fan base would be virtually non-existent, no matter what gender hosts the show.

I'm a male who likes popSiren. The gender difference doesn't really affect me. I just like a good variety show. Plus I'm 20, so that means I grew up with TechTV, and to a lesser extent, ZDTV. Nerdy since the day I was born. :p :)

My dad commented that they make a lot of "chick" jokes on the show that females get but a most percentage of males don't. Like Heather's reference to The Princess Bride. As soon as she quoted it I instantly knew that it was from The Princess Bride. My father and brother were both confused, even when Sarah and Jessica continued to quote. It wasn't till the visual was shown that they got it.

If there are more of these types of references I see the males possible getting frustrated.

I'd have to disagree on the Princess Bride thing. 1) I know more men who have seen it and quote it than women. 2) It's a reference to a comedy movie, how is it a "chick" joke? Your brother and dad must of either not seen it or not remember it or never had people around them quoting it.

I knew the quote! It was a great movie and it had Andre the Giant in it!!

There's just different types of guys out there. Real jock types who only watch action films, for example, probably wouldn't see The Princess Bride simply because the name doesn't sound masculine. But, it's really a kids movie/comedy. If they haven't seen it, they're missing out.

Inconceivable!
