Hello Folks,
I know a number of you have been rather upset about the recent change in compatibility of our XviD content and PS3s (ok, they're broken). Unfortunately the PS3 we have is at old firmware and is a dev box, etc, long story but we can't really test them at the moment. If some folks would try the Tekzilla 25's large XviD on their PS3 and confirm the compatibility, it would be greatly appreciated (note: this was a new encode done just today which replaced the old one). A (semi) direct link:

If you have any funky devices (ie: not a desktop/laptop) that like xvid's please feel free to leave a comment letting us know if it broke your device. Thanks!

are you able to play it from the ps3 w/o any middleware? what firmware version are you on? Could you please confirm the md5sum of the file you're trying to play? Thanks for any help.

So the new PS3 update broke Xvid support? Because I tried to play an xvid (non Rev3 file) off a thumbdrive on my PS3 and it didn't work. It worked on my 360.

Well since ps3 is a upnp system, you need middleware to my knowledge just to connect a network so it see's it. The file im using is the file you posted. Let me see if i can get nero on my media server, i had good luck with that in the past.
Oh and the firmware is the latest... 2.20 ? I think thats it, but whatever it is its the one that just rolled out a week or so ago.

No, the ps3 update didn't, I did :)
I'm currently working on a project to streamline our encoding workflow and one massive part of that was to move our workflow to a single arch instead of using disparate ones (we used to shuffle files around from mac/x86 to netbsd/x86, etc). When consolidating to the macs, the xvidcore build we used was aparently not... appreciated.. by the ps3's

The latest version of the software, version 2.20, was released on March 25, 2008 (wikipedia)

Data type not supported.

I haven't the slightest how to check the md5 on a PS3 though.
(and it's the 2.20 update)

the md5 *shouldn't* matter, it was just to make sure the copy i pushed to bitgravity was the copy you got. I've confirmed the copy that BG has is right. We've got a few more ideas and I've tracked down a non-dev PS3 so I'll get testing done and hopefully we'll have some good xvids soon..

Nope, wont even work through nero, which will transcode it on the fly i believe.

I thought this was just a TRS problem, but I've finally found the thread. Yes, I'm having this problem too. Using TVersity. It works if you set it to transcode of course, but then I wouldn't be able to pause or FF. Please get this working! Thanks.
Just wondering if there was any update with the XviD problem us PS3ers are havin'?!?
The old XviD Rev3 shows before the change over still work on my firmware 2.30 PS3.
I'm using AutoPodder on Vista Ultimate to DL the shows and WMP11 media server to stream over my network. I changed my AutoPodder DL to WMV large, but even the WMV files errors out 'bout halfway thru a show.
Nothin' is workin' right!!!... it's tearing the arse outta me!!! I needz my Rev3 shows!!!
Pls fix...cause I need my fix!!!
I'm a Rev3 junkie, and Rev3 is my dealer.

We're still working on this (more pressing matters have taken precedence). Is there a particular reason you're trying the XviD over the h264's, out of curiosity?

sure it does. Our qt large and small are simply h264's. from http://www.cdrinfo.com/sections/news/Details.aspx?NewsId=18779:
VIDEO
MPEG-1, MPEG-2 (PS,TS), H.264/MEPG-4 AVC, MPEG-4 SP
MUSIC
ATRAC (.oma .msa .aa3), AAC (.3gp .mp4), MP3 (.mp3), WAV (.wav)
Please ensure you're at the latest firmware rev.

that's really odd, we tried it several times and with different formats, *.WMV was the only one that'd play without getting "unsupported format." Could it be a difference in the older PS3s? I know he specifically went for the one that still used the PS2 hardware emulation rather that the software ones.

Quicktime works I have tons of music videos in quicktime and works on my ps3...
Also get this fixed as soon as possible,I really wish the ps3 had a podcast client....
Also while where on the topic... I have a ipod classic...and when I do any rev3 show it really out of crop can you also fix that...I use the Itunes download...
Hi guys, I'm a bit of a of a PS3/video nerd and I registered an account to talk about this stuff.
As far as I can tell, the reason Rev3 HD videos aren't recognized by PS3 is because they're .mov. I have a 60GB model and I watch HD shows on my PS3 all the time, but I first download them on my Mac, open them up with QuickTime Pro, and use File->Export and Save to MP4 to essentially copy the audio and video streams into an .mp4 container that PS3 can watch fine. Since it isn't re-encoding, just copying the data into a new file, it only takes a minute or so even on my old and weak Mac Mini. Then I have to get the shows over to PS3 with a USB stick or some other media. It'll also work on Xbox 360 this way, I believe.
Point is: I really, really wish Rev3 would switch containers from .mov to .mp4. That way I could download shows in the PS3 browser and have no conversions to do. I'm currently downloading a "high quality" XviD through PS3 to watch now, I haven't tried it before. Again, this can be done by the users, but since .MP4 is more widely accepted than the QuickTime-specific .mov container, it would help if the shows were released this way. Old shows could be converted the way I mentioned above, and on a powerful machine would probably only take something like 15 seconds an episode.

Now if only someone could tell me a way to do that on PC that works for me...(I try that using Quicktime Pro on windows and it takes an hour or more)
Edit: Interesting, the h.264 and passthrough options aren't selectable. (Fixed it)

Hey Peeps, I know this thread is over a year old :P but I was still having the same problem. The best way I have figured so far is to use divx7 converter (free) to 'convert' the files to divx. I have then streamed from my pc to ps3 using tversity or transferred to memory stick and watched with no probs :) Conversion process is not great at 10 mins for a 45 min episode but better than nothing I think!

Old news buddy. All the formats already stream through WMP11 and TVersity without additional conversion. This thread was buried for a reason.

nope. I have a release PS3 that plays all the quick time videos I've thrown at it.
