My friends, these days hype gets thrown around with reckless abandon, like beads from a Mardi Gras parade float, and nine times out of ten the hype is completely and totally without merit.

Gears Of War is not one of those.

My god, it is the most violent, crazy, heartpounding, and beautiful game I have ever played, period. Running from one point of cover to another in the midst of flying limbs and bullets is something you have to see and experience to believe. It's amazing. Locusts erupt from the ground all around you, and you often have to alternate between brutal melee moves (the chainsaw bayonet is a thing of beauty) and blindfiring over your shoulder, all while grenades are going off and your squad mates are dropping. It is the closest I think I've ever felt like I was in an actual war, and I love it.

Anyway, if you have the means, go and pick this game up. You will not be disappointed.

Now, I haven't played it yet. BUT...

This game doesn't look very good.
It's beautiful like nothing I've seen before, ****ing amazing graphics. But it looks like this game will sell, and be good, on that only.
The gameplay is soo standard, the game looks very linear, and the story is kinda dumb.
It's a game where you move from point a to point b, and shoot everything in between.

It gets a lot of good scores and people are praising, but if it were the third or fourth game out on the UE 3.0 engine, that probably wouldn't be the case.

It's hard to compare it to other games, as it is fairly unique. It is NOT a run-and-gun game, so you can't compare it to those sorts of games, and it is certainly not a stealth title, so you can't go there either. It is a game all about placing yourself stategically in the battlefield for maximum cover and minimal exposure while firing. You really do have to play it to get the idea.

And yes, the controls are tight, and surprisingly pretty straightforward.

I had heard such horrible things about kill.switch that I actually never played it, so I couldn't do a direct comparison. I've of course seen it and read about it, but I've never been compelled to spend money and/or time on it.

I never played it but recall knowing of it to not be too shabby. Maybe in the future I will play it and Gears and be able to compare. It would be interesting if they are both similar, then all that innovation they say Gears has is out the window.

Earlier this afternoon I went up to a Gamestop I work at one shift a week to check out a copy of Gears of War and we were already sold out of every copy that wasn't already presold. There should be more tomorrow but damn that's a lot of sales for just being open 2hrs.

I also found out that we're currently preselling Halo3 in 3 different sku's. 59.99 regular, 79.99 collectors edition, and 99.99 comes with a helmet and a 4 dvd box set. I forget the name of that one, titanium or something but I heard it's got all the red vs. blue stuff on the DVDs.

ebgames blows i put 5 dollars down for a pre order and went to get it today and wwas told I have to wait till tomorrow they have to see who paid more for preorders comes in to claim them then they can pass them out to others. what a load of crap. So i went next door to virgin and got a copy waiting till after jericho and lost to fire it up.

I thought so too, and for big chains like Best Buy is most certainly is. But for the game stores that's how the company decides what allotment they get for each title. If they only presold 1 Gears of war they'd probably only get 4 total. If they presell 90 they might get 150 for the day of release. They'll most certainly be getting 90 at a minimum, if needed less will go to stores with lower numbers that would be getting more than they presold. Its a great way for stores to be competitive and get sales before hand.

For consoles and certain titles like GTA, Zelda, and apparently Gears of War I think pre-selling is a great tool for gamers to take advantage of. Nothing sucks more than a game selling out that you want, which is hardly the case anymore but it could happen like it did with Vice City and Windwaker.

I agree it's great for the stores--but it's a hose job for gamers. I know, literally, a half dozen people who got boned out of Gears today because they "secured their copy" at EB/GS weeks ago. Meanwhile, when I went to Best Buy to pick up CoD3, I could have bathed in the locust-encrusted sum*****es.

Not to mention, you can frequently find games much cheaper, especially in the first week of their release, at places like Circuit City and CompUSA, where they use them as loss leaders to get you in the shop.

I just got past the first Beserker fight on Hardcore. Loved the achievement name.

This game is effing amazing. The visuals are far and away the best I've ever seen on a console and the gameplay is incredibly fun. Whoever said the game looked boring because it was just move from point A to point B and kill everything in between needs to try it themselves. When you're trying to strategically move around cover to flank the enemy or throwing a grenade to scatter embedded Locusts you'll see there is much more to the game.

Also, who doesn't love guns with chainsaws attached to them.

That's only what people say when they just see the very limited promotional footage. I haven't gotten my copy yet because fedex is run by a bunch of sausages, but I've heard from reviews that the environments do indeed change. I hope someone who has the game can verify.

I was curious. What difficulty are you guys playing on? I heard that it feels like there should be another variation in between Casual and Hardcore. I usually play games on Normal the first time through. Which would that be in this case?

I'm not too far into the game yet but the environments have been pretty same-ish so far. That's not really a bad thing though because they look incredible.

I'm playing on Hardcore. I haven't tried casual so I can't compare the two but I will say Hardcore presents a pretty heftly challenge. It's not so hard that it seems impossible or makes you want to throw your controller into the TV but you're certainly not just walking through the game either.

Ugh... I hate when that happens. I think something similar happened to me with Final Fantasy X... starting over sucks.

Back to topic... when we went looking around Best Buy tonight for Viva Pinata and they didn't have it, I looked for Gears of War instead... but all they had were GoW faceplates for some reason. Plus about three people were standing right in front of the 360 section and it was getting awkward trying to really dig through the display, so we gave up and bought DVDs instead.

I *am* looking forward to renting it when my "short wait" is over on Gamefly after all the positive comments here.

So my friend got a second 360 controller. We had a blast playing co-op last night. Our gripes about the game: AI for your team members suck(expect for Cole Train...anyone else think he is visually modeled after and sound like Terry Tate (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4q4jb-kXebQ)?). Your AI teammates regularly break cover and charge in. I thought this was suppose to be a cover based game? They die or rather get incapacitated always when you need them the most(in single player, there are scenes where you need your teammates alive and trying to help, e.g. having them distract a turret while you flank it and take out the gunner). The cinematics were you have to walk are sooo slow. We wish they were skippable. I understand from a story and presentation standpoint but still...just let us play the fraking game.

Yeah, we're cruising(on a very bumpy and pothole filled road) through difficult. I hope there is a big leap in difficulty on Insane like Halo 1&2's Hardcore.

Gears of War holds true to the hype. And for those of you wondering, "Is it better than Halo 2 online?" yes. This will hold anyone over until Halo 3. Never have i played a game that was this viseral and action packed. Also other games could take note of what GoW does, makes for even setup for either team, and it puts the weapons at choke points in the game. this is the first game in a long time where tactics and skill wins...not who has the whore weapons.

I like the game and everything, but the single player was too short. It's like games that are really good are like short as hell, and really bad games are like way too long. Maybe they just feel that way cause they're good and you want to play them more. With characters and places that you like to be a game should be longer, bad games should be like 10 hours long. Good games should be like 30-40+ hours.

Multi-player is good. It would be fun to play co-op and see what it likes, it'd probably easier maybe.

If people think that this game is the killer app wait till Rainbow six vegas comes out. It is built on the same graphics engine and the guns feel more real. My biggest problem with GOW was that the locust were bullet sponges. I understand they do that to make it last longer and to give casual gamers a more even playing field but it makes the game feel less intense. Think about having a grunt in halo take an entire clip of your assault rifle to kill.

If Rainbow Six did not have tom clancy's name on it or have an established stereotype, Everyone would say that it blows away GOW.

I just spent the past 5+ hours playing GoW in co-op at my friend's place. Man is that game ever fun! I was actually shocked when I first saw the blood hit the screen, and damn if it ain't the coolest effect I've ever seen! When I grind up some ***** locust with my chainsaw-gun or get jumped from behind and a shotgun blast from an enemy tears me apart all over the camera lense, that's intense! I know there's been games where blood hits the screen before, but for some reason this just seems WAY cooler. It's almost seems... thicker? Anyways, it was some great fun, that's for damn skippy!

The only thing I found kept tripping me up, was when there was a lot of cover all around, sometimes my guy wouldn't grab the cover i wanted him to grab. But of course as time went on, I seemed to get better at it, so it could have just been me.

OMG I am having the best time with it! Viva Pinata *will* suck up a lot of your time, and my daughter and I now have to work out "deals" over who gets the 360 and for how long, lol.

So pissed I ended up getting it at 3pm on a Friday, heh heh. If it had come earlier in the week, she would have been at school all day.

There's so much in it for just about anyone. My daughters are loving the whole caring, nuturing angle and, of course, all the cute critters. I'm having a blast building the perfect garden (and giving the pinatas demented names and making them hook up with their parents. ;) )

Once I discovered the conditions necessary to make the Syrupent stick around, I renamed the Mousemallow to "Bait." :)

I just got my 360 and Gears on Friday. Holy crap its AWESOME. I don't know if its the game or if its cause Ive been playing computer games instead of console so much the past year but I'm terrible at it right now. I think I need to mess with my controller settings cause I can't aim for crap. Anyway I'm "capncutlass" on Live, feel free to add me to your lists for some co-op madness.

I'm planning on getting Double Agent, Dead Rising, and R6 Vegas for Xmas. Are there any other must have titles out there I should look at?

I already beat Gears of War, and it wasn't all that interesting. It was like a combination of Halo and Half-Life, with some new "Hide behind shit" feature, which isn't all that innovative. The graphics are good n' all, and I like the fact that I can get someone on my friends list to jump right into the game with me, but that's not all that awesome.

So one of the problems i've been having is getting into games on-line but when i would finally got into some games i faced cheatting @$$ mofo's trying rack points. my story was after 2 rounds 6 of the 8 people in the game had cheese related names!

I've tried to play online a few times (maybe five sessions of sitting there and trying to connect and re-connect to servers lasting about 10 minutes each try) and only really connected once. It can't be the best online game ever if I can't ever connect to it, or it is really buggy when I do get in. The one time that I did get to play, I would freeze and wouldn't be able to change weapons.

I should be on tonight as well. I played some co-op this weekend with a friend and it was one of the best gaming experiences I've ever had in over 25 years of gaming.

Stupid 360 question...does voice chat over Live work when you are not in a game so you can figure out what game you want to play etc? Or does it just kick in when you are in the same game?

I suck at the torque bow. What makes it worse, is then dying by the torque bow. Does not make me happy... at all.

Haven't played multi yet... hoping to beat the single player first. I'm trying to do it on Hardcore, and I'm just starting Act 4. It's pretty hard for me. Is the difficulty going to get too frustrating for me to continue on much longer? Should I bail out and just do casual?

BTW: My tag is bigwhiteryan, if anyone wants to kick my ass with the torque bow, too.

It was good playing with Danny T and Alex and i dont remeber the other guys name(jeff?). This game is SOOOOO ****ing good. Even when you get alittle depressed and walk into the Train.

Does this game change the shooter genre? It looks pretty but from what I have read it rips off form Res 4 and Kill Switch game play wise. Before I spend any money on a new console I want a game that changes a genre or creates a new one like GTA 3 did on the PS2.

My rental of Gears is supposedly on its way now... my luck it will show up a week late, cracked in half because they're test-shipping games without the cardboard protectors in my area.

The Game Rocks "Balls Deep", if any of you know what that means.. It is Awesome. Single Player or Co-Op is Great, but Multiplayer is a little weak, because of the small maps. You start the game in Multiplayer, and within 8 seconds the other team is right in front of you. If they had larger maps like in Halo 2, GRAW, etc, it would make it even greater. I would definately recommend this game.

Ok, so now I've beaten the game twice on Hardcore. Once solo and once co-op, and co-op is really easy compared to single player. Having another competent person on your side instead of your halfway retarded teammates really helps. I've also started a new co-op game on Insane and it really isn't much harder than hardcore.

I think Danny T's review was a bit over the top as far as saying Gears is the pinnacle of gaming and that no new games are needed but it certainly kicks a lot of ass. Can't wait to see whats going to be coming out in a few years.

So.... I made the mistake of asking my husband to join me in co-op mode. So now I'm restricted to only playing through Gears when he can play, which kinda sucks with his job.

If I do accept a multiplayer invitation, just remember, I WILL suck. I can't stand not having crosshairs while fully mobile. Unless there's some setting I'm missing?

My wife just suprised me with a xbox 360 and gears of war. i was so suprised! I have a 50" hi def dlp tv and this game looks AMAZING. ive only played for 20 minutes or so cuz i got family coming over but hey.. i got all tomorrow to kick some ass. i cant wait. Nothing will top halo but im sure this game is gonna be in the top 5. shooters are my favorite.

Well then my gun seems to pull high and to the right. I swear I'm aiming right at something and it isn't even over the plate, so to speak.

But Danny is right about the chainsaw.... very satisfying. I haven't tried curbstomping yet. I tend to want to keep moving.
