... just curious. If this runs too close to self-promotion, feel free to close and delete it.
I'm considering starting up a free CJB forum. Fairly low quality, but it's basically just to test the water before starting a whole website at some point down the line. Just want to see if anyone would be at all interested in joining. Basically just don't want to start anything that won't have any sort of following.
Who's in? Thoughts, ideas?

Dude, 7000+ posts means we can trust your judgment when it comes to not spamming the forum. Knock yourself out...

Nothing special. They allow you to make a free forum through them, so long as they can run the ads on it. You can go ad-free if you pay.

So, what is the main topic of the forum?

The forum itself will be about nothing in particularly. The problem is, anytime I've started a website or anything I neglect it because absolutely no one visits it. So, before I start a website to house my stories, blog, etc. I want to see if I can get a forum off the ground without forgetting about it in a week.

What are you going to offer that keeps people coming back and that sets it apart from other forums? Sites like Digg and Rev3 offer the users something unique and something to keep them coming back and talking about and you're gonna need some such thing to keep people coming back.

It's basically going to be friends or people from here. Just to see if I remember to keep up with it. If things work out there will be a better forum, working around the website itself. At that point I'll look for "something unique".
For now, it's just a fun sense of community, light moderating, and hopefully a lax atmosphere.
Edit: Or did you mean with the website? Sorry. I was talking about the forums.

Exactly. That's what brought me to the Rev3 forums-the fact that I watched Rev3 shows gave me a common starting point to share thoughts and ideas with people who have watched the same shows. People have a tendency to join forums with a main topic that they're interested in, so that way they have something to talk about. Sure, there are always going to be "General" sections which usually get way O/T, but there's still a common point to start everything off and attract new visitors.

Forums can be the same way... just look at the NIN board Echoing the Sound. That place has thousands of asshol... i mean members all there to bitch about whatever is on their mind at this moment. And as far as I know that place was started by just a handful of random NIN fans who took phpBB and re-worked the entire thing to make it their own. All they offered was a topic and a common interest and boom, it became an alternative to The Spiral (the for-pay NIN fan club board). Not saying it happened overnight, just giving an example.

Make it black text on a black background, and pitch it at emos :)

Your idea works too.

Just make sure that it can be skinned in different shades of grey (with splashes of red) ... because nothing is more unique and individual that the angst felt by an emo.
