I got this all tenacious D's official website. I heard about this little ad that Jack Black did about stopping piracy is not hilarious. I see it now, but I can't link to it without linking directly to tenacious D's front page. But here is embed if you want to put it on your myspace page or whatnot. some of you tech geeks should be able to figure it out

My views on piracy are the same as Alex Albrechts. I download shit I would never pay to see, ever. It's usually for curiosity and not entertainment purposes or simply because I'm bored. 9/10 times I end up deleting it without watching it anyways.
If movies or other media like video games ever lived up to the hype the ad agencies create it might be another story. If they marketed less than average products as being less than average products and charged a lesser price for them I would be more enticed to go see them as I'd be getting what I payed for. They don't/can't though, they lie to us "tricking" us into buying their products under false pretenses. Every movie out there spins the same "...Best film of the year" bullshit regardless if it's Braveheart or The Benchwarmers. **** Hollywood, I do by downloading films I don't feel like getting ripped off on.
Companies like Netflix and Gamefly are the way to go for people like me. The more innovative services that come along that offer reasonable content for a reasonable price the less piracy there will ultimately be. Direct legal downloads are just around the corner and I think they'll change a lot of things about the distribution of media. The picture quality will be top notch, the selection will be huge, and the price will be fair. For people like me that's all I really want. Until I get that I pirate, proudly.

I TiVo'ed a couple of episodes but haven't watched them yet. The quality looks pretty poor as far as production value goes, doesn't mean I won't like it but, any guys want to let me borrow the DVDs for the first season?

Production quality and production values were actually really high for a SciFi show.

I never steal games, there's tons of reviews out there so you can make sure you 'll like a game first. I can count on one hand the number of movies I've watched as downloads and even those I will rent. TV programs are the only thing that I download. I can't wait for this stuff to go on line for sale so I don't have to feel likeI need to do that just to watch the programs I like.

I'll still pirate music and movies. I don't care, and on certain occasions, I like to call myself a pirate. It makes me feel kinda bad ass. And for witty rebuttals, I say "I prefer to be called a Buccaneer American."
Seriously, though I honestly see NO problem with downloading music and the like. If I was an artist, I'd be happy that people want to listen to my music and download it. Same thing if I was an actor in a movie, I'd just be glad that people are watching my shit.

I hardly ever buy CDs anymore only if the band is incredible. And I never download movies as they just look like shit. The last one I did was Lilo and stitch I ****ing love that movie and bought it.

The CD is pirated like mad but it doesnt sell very well in the stores. That's gonna make it a little hard for your label to want to let you make a second cd.

if the CD is "kickass" it will still sell better than other CDs that aren't... hence the record label would rather put out your second CD than some other band's crap.
i say support your favorite bands by going to lots of concerts and buying t-shirts instead. if you want to buy some CDs, buy the cool indie bands you can't torrent so easily because they are not well known enough.

The point is that as things stand now record sales and box office numbers do matter whether we think they should or not.

My understanding of the record industry is that when they release an album they go through allsorts of trouble to get them to chart well, but the real money is concert sales.
For instance a Madonna Album costs $20, but to see her live probably will cost an avarage of someting ridiculous as $300. There is going to be something like 20 thousand repeat customers at this venue and they'll buy Madonna branded shirts, merchandise and join the Kabala religion. I would say CD sales don't reallycount as the major source of income. If I download the latest Madonna Album for free, pay to go to her concerts I think she'll forgive me, because if she doesn't I'll pay for a Nritney Spears concert and she's OK with me downloading her music.
Another example, my fave Band is Reel Big Fish, and I see them everytime they are here in OZ, bought all their Albums, even Favourite Noise, because my copy of Why do they rock so hard didn't have 'Take on me' and I buy a shirt et every gig.
On the contrary Another band I'm really fond of is a Spanish Ska group called Ska-P. I want to buy their stuff, but they just plain don't sell them here in Oz, my Alternative record store gives me weird looks and never orders anything for me, and I have credit card problems so I can't order of the web. So I just copied 30 tracks down to my iPod from the columbian guy at Uni who introduced me to them.
Anyways, I find it unconvincing that rich people need to preach to me that they need the money, as probably my pirating ways indirectly got them money through somebody else. It's not like Jack Black has trouble paying rent, or for that matter any band member from Metalika.

That's exactly what I do. There are some CDs I think I need to buy, just to have them in my collection, and one's I can't find to torrent I sorta have to buy them.
And to what madripper said, I'm the same way with movies. I'm a little obsessed with director commentaries, so if I really enjoy a movie I'll buy the DVD for the commentary.
I usually only resort to downloading movies when they just open. For example I downloaded Half-Nelson cos I couldn't travel down to Manhattan to see it, if it comes out on DVD and there's a commentary, I'll definitely buy it or rent it.
Sandstone, when I download movies I usually get a DVD screener version of it, so the quality is pretty good. But every few scenes a black bar comes shows up at the top, but that doesn't really bother me.

Read this and think about what you just said. This is a speech given by Courtney Love regarding proposed reform of Bankruptcy laws for artists when their record labels screw them out of every dime, and then claim they actually OWE the record label money after an album.

Don't screw the artists... screw the music industry cartels. You may end up doing the exact same thing, but lets be doing it for the right reason.

She is an active activist (the best kind) on artist copyright reform, and is a huge thorn in the side of the RIAA.
