I heard Dan talk about how he likes film scores a lot and how he can draw inspiration from them so I was wondering: what are some of people's favorite scores for film? Also, try to steer clear of obvious ones like Star Wars, LotR, Spielberg etc.

I love pretty much every Danny Elfman score, but my favorites of his are Spider-Man (the first one more than the second), Mars Attacks!, Men In Black (again, the first one), and Planet of the Apes (the 2001 version...terrible movie, awesome score). His theme for Fable is pretty neat, too.
Some other great scores that I like are Alan Silvestri's "Back to the Future" (all three movies, actually), Don Davis' "The Matrix" and "The Matrix Revolutions" (2nd score, not all that great), David Newman's "Galaxy Quest," Michael Giacchino's "The Incredibles," John Williams' "Jurassic Park II," Jerry Goldsmith's "Star Trek: First Contact," and Silvestri's "Van Helsing." And if you wanna go really vintage, Sergei Prokofiev's "Alexander Nevsky" score is pretty awesome, too.
EDIT: Almost forgot John Powell's "X-Men: The Last Stand" score. Awesome, a lot of Elfman influence. His "Dark Phoenix" theme is so beautiful and tragic. The "Dark Phoenix's Tragedy" and "Phoenix Rises" tracks are so emotional and intense.
Ok, I admit it, I bought the soundtracks to Star Wars episodes II and III.

Here's the old thread about this:

It doesn't have the fancy style of the revision3 forums, but the content is there

So are we going to keep talking about our favorite film scores here? I think we should for those of us who werent a part of the old forums. Might just be me though oh well.
My favorite film score is for A Clockwork Orange. The movies main track is amazing and gets stuck in my head every time I hear it. The rest of the soundtrack is pretty great to listen to. Also, the score for POTC 1 & 2 wasn't bad, but it's so freakin repetetive.

The soundtracks for Heat & Snow Falling on Cedars are good for chillen out/sleeping

By all means keep talking about it here. But if you're curious about what some other people have said previously, check out the link. I'm sure some people don't want to re-post their thoughts.

I really like the soundtrack to The Shining. From Walter/Wendy Carlos' haunting synth music to the use of Krzysztof Penderecki's compositions or Béla Bartók's "Music For Strings, Percussion and Celesta". It's all creepy stuff.

I'm a huge fan of what Clint Mansell and the Kronos Quartet have done with Requiem for a Dream and The Fountain.
I also love Jon Brion's stuff (Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, I Heart Huckabees, Eternal Sunshine).
And, of course, just about anything John Williams does.

Anything Ennio Morricone did for Sergio Leone, especially The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in America. Untouchables wasn't bad either.
All of Joe Hisaishi's stuff for Studio Ghibli is incredible.

I'm really liking the Cowboy Bebop movie soundtrack. The series has an awesome soundtrack too.

I'll agree. I'm not into anime at all, but I love that show (which I know a lot of people say). And the soundtrack really helps you get into it.

Two pop to mind: James Newton Howard's Signs score. I love the credit sequence to that movie! And the other is Elliot Goldenthal's Alien 3. Say what you like about the film but that's an awesome awesome score.

Shakespear in Love on that baby! ;) That score was so good it gave me chills. To me a score is so essential to a movie it can really elevate it from a good movie to an excellent one.
Let's see I think I already posted my love for Hans Zimmer's Green Card score and of course Elfman's scores are great.
The other day I was watching Batman Begins and I really liked that score.
X-men
The Shawshank Redemption
There are others that I'll post when I remember.

So, it feels like I post these every week or so on these boards, but hey it's fun!
-Last of the Mohicans -- Randy Edelman and Trevor Jones
-The Village -- James Newton Howard. Yes, I know the movie isn't good. However, the score is fantastic, probably one of the best to be produced in the last five years.
-The Good, the bad, and the Ugly -- so recognizable.
-Big Fish -- Danny Elfman
-Rudy -- Classic score.
-The American President -- Most underrated score of all time, especially considering it was recycled for other movies and a countless number of movie trailers.
-Love Actually -- surprisingly grandiose score for a romantic comedy
-Rocky -- Bill Conti. I still run to this score. It friggin gets you pumped.

I see the movie "Rudy" showing up on may lists. The movie soundtrack is a personal favorite of mine. I wanted to make a few observations about it.
1. The soundtrack is pretty repetitive. The same themes are repeated pretty faithfully.
2. The soundtrack actually elevates the entire film.
I also wanted to float a comment about my favorite soundtrack "Last of the Mohicans." A few years back they released an extended "Director Cut" on DVD. They added a few cut scenes, but didn't spend the money on rescoring. The result is almost painfully unwatchable. The soundtrack fades in and out inappropriately and some scenes seem to drag-on without direction.
I's also like to add some music scores that are interesting, even if they don't make the "best" list. Film and TV music composer Basil Poledourous recently passed away. He's responsible for three soundtracks of note: The soundtracks to "Conan the Barbarian", "Lonesome Dove", "Starship Troopers", "Robocop" and "The Hunt for red October."

I actually found the movie sound track to be nothing like the series sound track and it was very lame in comparison.

Great choice!
1. Requiem of a Dream - Clint Mansell; Kronos Quartet
2. Rocky
3. Edward Scissorhands
4. Donnie Brasco
5. LOTR - Return of the King

Starship Troopers has an awesome score! Thinking about it made me wanna watch it again. So I did. Michael Ironside is such a goddamn pimp!
What about TV shows? Favourite theme tunes and scores?
I think the best TV show scores I've heard recently have been Prison Break (British here! No season 2 spoilers please!) and I really like the music in Boomtown. One of my favourite theme tunes is the one to Millennium in season one (before they messed with it a tiny bit). Really gets the tone just right, unlike, say, the end credits music on The West Wing which drives me flippin' crazy! Love the show and all the other music but the end credit music is irritating, especially after a really dramatic or downer ending.

I also have the DVD - original cut. Glad I didn't wait for the extended Directors version.

TV themes?? I love the Doctor Who theme ... and think the current version is particularly well done. Oh yeah ... Prison Break ... the final fight scene in the season finally when Lincoln gets implaed on the fence post and dies is kinda anticlimatic. All that work escaping, and his brother dies WTF is up with that??

OK here is one of my favorites, avoiding the obvious John Williams and Danny Elfman stuff.
The Crow!
The soundtrack is great, but yes I am talking about the score. I think a lot of people overlook this score, because the soundtrack was so good. http://www.amazon.com/Crow-Original-Motion-Picture-Score/dp/B0000014UL/sr=1-3/qid=1165973759/ref=pd_bbs_3/002-6373046-4589632?ie=UTF8&s=music

Here's an idea. Instead of talking about sound tracks, lets talk about composers.
The big six?
1. John Williams
2. James Horner
3. Hans Zimmer
4. Howard Shore
5. Jerry Goldsmith
6. Danny Elfman
any others? Basil Pouledoris, Randy Edelmen,
