I feel like I'm being blasphemous here but I cannot get into this game. I feel like the controls are totally unworkable and as far as the story... Its like watching Japanese tv...huge WTF-is-going-on

its too bad, since I used to love fighting games back on the day. Killer instinct, mortal kombat, etc

besides cutscenes SSE is bleck.(since you mentioned story I can only assume this is what you mean since other than that the game has none)

What controls are you using because pretty much everyone uses the Gamecube controller but the other ones are not great.

Get friends and also get friends online the game was made first and foremost for multiplayer like the other 2 games.

Oh and to get Sonic you can do it other than SSE by playing classic mode 10 times..though won't get wolf or toon link that way....have to finish SSE then go back.

I dont get the complaints about the controls.

I'm using the nunchuck and the wiimote and it seems perfectly natural. I played today for like 2 hrs and my hands weren't even cramped. Most games I can't play for more than 45mins with out stopping for a bit. When I was playing Oblivion on the 360, I would have to stop every 20mins it seemed.

Even my wife said it feels natural to her.

The way people are talking you'd think the thing made you strap tack strips to your palms...

It plays a lot more like the N64 game than the Gamecube one to me... Playing online is fun, (and free (awesome)) and the vast amount of customizable game options makes me wish it had come out when I was in high school and could get 4 of my buddies over everyday to play.

You don't buy these types of games for the single player game, but I liked it. Mindless but fun...

How is the gamecube controller better than the classic controller? I'm wondering if I need to bother picking one up or not.

I just didn't feel like I was in control in any meaningful way.... I feel like I'm always moving in slow motion compared to the enemies. This is the wrong game for realism.

I'm a big wii fan... But This isn't really a good game for the wii, I'm sorry to say. If you have to use the gamecube controller to make of pallatable... Theres something wrong.

You made a big mistake if you were expecting a realistic fighting game starring Mario and friends.

I never feel like I'm in slow motion at all, if anything it feels like I'm moving a little on the fast side. Perhaps you're experiencing some sort of problem with your Wii?

I had always assumed that the reason the gamecube controller was the most popular form of control because most people are coming into this having played Melee for years and are used to that particular controller for this game. If others think there is a different reason for this I am interested to hear about it.

Not every controller style is best suited for every game type and every person. There is a reason some people prefer the keyboard and mouse combo over a standard controller for first person shooters. Nintendo was smart to offer a control system that would work with the controller everyone got by default with their Wii, and then giving other options for people that wouldn't be happy with that configuration.

I tried classic first and the button layout for the actions and the analog feels awkward..I love the classic controller for VC games but not for SSBB.GCN controller you just pick up and play it,it just feels like this game was designed for it.

As for slow mot to the OP...if anything this game is fast and realism..um it's Nintendo ..since when did Nintendo go for realism esp with Sonic and mario or link kirby and pokemon etc etc..

totally agree. classic controller is much harder to use. but the thing is this isnt really a fighting game. its a party game where you just together with a bunch of friends and have fun with it.

i should clarify - i didn't expect realism - quite the opposite. in other games, mario can jump and move quite supernaturally. in this game, however, all the movements seem slowed and limited to the point of frustration.

and i feel like there are 8 buttons for movement but only one for attack.

i know it's a popular game, but i expected bouncy fun dynamics and got limited movement which yielded in limited fun :/

I didn't really enjoy the first two entries in this series during the limited number of times I played them. I always felt like they were half-assed fighting games and lacked any depth. This time I bought it for the online abilities so I could play with my friends across the country and I gave it more of a shot, and somehow it clicked for me.

This isn't really about mastering the button combinations for special moves, it's about frantically trying to beat on everyone else while avoiding the obstacles on the board, and dropping everything to be the first one to get to the super power up when it appears on screen. It doesn't play like anything you'd normally have defined as a fighting game. So far I'm having a lot of fun with it.

I will agree that I don't really get the love for this game. It's ok, but at the end of the day it's just a chaotic button masher. People will argue that if you practice and learn all the combos that makes it not a button masher, but I maintain that while you CAN learn all those combos, someone just button mashing can still beat you while you're trying to one him or her up with your "skills"

I much prefer a more refined fighter such as Killer Instinct (props to the OP for mentioning this...to date still my favorite fighting game probably). I also prefer games like DOA or Tekken or even Virtua Fighter to this.

Not that I'd discredit anyone for liking it, just not my cup of tea.

It's not as technical as other fighting games, but if you can't beat a button masher... then you don't have "skills".

i find the game very fun and addicting. played it at my friends house and went through some of story mode. i haven't played it using the gamecube controller because the wii-mote and nunchuk felt fine for me. i gotta find a Wii

I think the idea that the Gamecube controller is best really comes from people who played a lot Melee. The classic is fine and if you don't like the button placement you can change it for any controller you choose to play with.

I think this is where you differentiate the people who 'get' Smash Bros and the people who don't.

Smash Bros is one of the deepest fighting games I've ever played given that there are no fancy combos or button inputs to perform some sort of attack. It's simply A or A +up, down, left, right or B or B+up,down, left, right. But the more you play and the more you start to use these moves not only for attacking, but for using them to save your ass when you get knocked out at high percentages, the game changes completely.

When you start looking into things like attack priority charts you'll realize this isn't that simple of a game. That being said, Melee was more complex with wave dashing and wall techs .

Get together with some friends who 'get it' and it's the most complex and fun game on the wii. Otherwise single player isn't that great after you unlock everything.
