3 clever hacks: save on gas, use Mentos and Mt. Dew to create an emergency light and a way to harness the power of photons to create free energy.

My jaw is sore from trying to extract the hooks you two set in there with this episode! :o I guess I'm lucky I bothered to watch all the way to the end instead of clicking off as soon as the credits started.
I was fully preparing to run out and find some Mentos and Dew. :p
And, yes, I tried the peroxide and Dew trick when I saw it on youtube. But I thought, "Patrick would never try to scam me."
I hope you make up for all this with a fantastic show next week.

Damn that had me duppped good, I was contemplating trying out the Moutain Dew thing, too. I was skeptical but figured it was worth a shot, it's a good thing I saw the end, otherwise I would have been pretty sticking and wet by the end of the day.

You guys got me on the glowing Mt. Dew. I'm studying biochemistry and it seemed plausible. The free energy machine tipped me off though. My skepticism kicked in high gear when I heard free energy.

Out of curiosity, how did you do the mentos and dew? I assume a glow stick?

04-01-2008, 12:58 AM
Your all muppets. I realised pretty much as soon as they refused to turn off the lights to see the "glowing mountain dew" thing. They did okay for nerds, but Patrick kept saying "So you're telling me.." which gave it a way too. And they refused to look directly at the camera.
Good effort though.

i always pretty close to running to the grocery store for some Mountain Dew and Mentos, but the free energy part gave it away for me. The increased MPG boost from the Right Guard also was obvious to me, being a car nut.

Pat & Dave; you bastards! :)
Like everyone else, I was ready to hop out and grab some Mentos and Mountain Dew. The P.E. stuff had me skeptical, but not April 1st skeptical. I just figured that Dave wasn't taking into account some net energy loss, and that the LED would die after awhile (just like with a Faraday flashlight).
Having no mechanical sense, I fell for the Right Guard gas mileage thing easily. Though it was at this point that I started questioning the integrity of Systm and Pat's "HSN" like personality change.
This was way better than Alex and Kevin's attempts. That's rather sad when you think about. Alex is the professional actor, and he couldn't keep a straight face, yet there's Patrick Norton and Dave Randolph acting completely normal with these "discoveries."
The only question I have now is in regards to Flight of the Phoenix.
Should we assume that Pat's glowing recommendation for the 60's version was also an April Fool's prank?

Heh, While I admit I didn't think of april fools till you said it: I noticed something was odd about this episode, there was something in your voices, and I found it odd that all three projects were much shorter on the How this works bit.

Oh, how you have betrayed my trust you evil, evil wizards.
Yes, Yes I bought the Mentos. I have no chem background, so that was easy.
Yes, Yes I bought the LED trick. But I knew an explanation was to be found.
Yes, Yes I bought the Right Guard. But I wondered how much it gunked the engine.
You will have to work hard, (Hard I Tell You!) to win back my trust.
But at the same time, pretty fikin funny!

same here .. and i second the perpetual energy comment - in that you guys seemed to be making a point that this was not actually a perpetual motion machine but an 'attempt' at it.
in a way i thought you guys just had created some kinda 'zero resistance' loop between the nes gun, it's sensor and the LED. Liked the Tesla reference. God knows Tesla was working on some crazy sh*t himself too. (hint: tesla == show ideas ??)
come to think of it, something tells me mentos DO emit some kinda radiation when you put 'em in dew. this one just makes sense..

I completely fell for all of the fake inventions...damn you Dave for being so trustworthy in all of the other Systm episodes that I didn't question it when you invented something that scientists can't do with unlimited funds...with a NES Zapper!
On a side note, I reckon the NES Zapper is one of the best looking gadgets from the 80s, although mine was the later orange and grey model, not just grey.

Less than a minute into the video, (noticing that the entire feed was reversed) I knew it was an April Fools Spoof. I was unfortunately disappointed with this episode. I had hoped that it was beyond Systm to try such a thing, maybe Diggnation or Internet Superstar or at least do it as a Tekzilla Daily, but the whole Systm Episode. I look forward to these things every week and now I'll have to wait till they do another real episode... still waiting for updates to the wireless truck?
The Mountain Dew thing was somewhat convincing, but perpetual motion? Come on!

I guess I can't speak for everyone out there, but I was definitely LOL toward the end of the episode.
The funniest gag to me was when they showed how Patrick tricked that woman into thinking her cycle was getting 100mpg as Patrick would poor gas in the tank while she was busy at work.I just thought that was awesome how Patrick and the systm team must have spent weeks building up that gag for April fools.
I do have some mechanical know how, and I just wasn't thinking about the diesel and gas engine difference and it was obviously bunk. I just couldn't believe a little arousal can of deodorant would give a 40mpg increase in millage and she would never have to change the deodorant can.
They definitely had me fooled with the mountain dew and mentos.
The whole free energy gag actually had me going, but I was pretty sure that was bunk.

Damn! Had me all the way! I heard about the Dew and Mentos thing before so I thought it was possible. I didn't know that it wasn't. I mean I could see it happening. It would just be some chemical reactions like lighting bugs have. The free energy thing I was a little sketical about. I though that they really believed that they had created it, but someone would have a scientific explainations why it worked and why it wouldn't work on a large scale. As for the motor cycle thing, I know that there are full boosters you can add to cars so It would seem reasonable to rig some sort of machine. I mean, if you added just a few drops of some other fuel to your gas, then surely it wouldn't screw anything up, wail at the same time still give you more fuel. It all seemed theoredically possible. Great joke guys. To bad I didn't watch it til April 2nd. But, thanks, you really had me. I wondor how many wikipedia pages were edited for april fools?

Good show, bit of a give away with the perpetual energy, but hey.
At least in the UK we don't have Mountain Dew (or mentos very often for that matter) so couldn't make a mess of my desk trying that one out.
Also not all Diesel engines are 2 stroke, in fact in Europe where 60% of new cars are diesel all of them are 4 stroke, can't remember the last time I saw a 2 stroke diesel to be honest.

Like others have posted, you completely had me on this show. I figured someone would explain away the perpetual energy one, but I though that was just because we were missing something. I didn't even suspect it was a hoax. It helped that the show date was March 31.
Ironically, I avoided Digg and Slashdot all day on April 1 for this very reason, but didn't suspect this episode of Systm at all.

This guys 1 of the best and watc his you tube Smack University videos
He is the creator of the booster its called SMACK .Simple to build and install.
Thanks For doing what all you old school tech tv guys are doing Im impressed .
Before catalytic converters, backyard ( shadetree) mechanics would drop a mist of water down the carburetor to help knock the carbon in an engine. Sure made things run better.

Yep, and Patrick and David would be so rich if the LED trick were real. The oil companies would jump all over each other to hide that one!!

Or maybe the oil companies secretly used big hollywood effects and hacked the Rev3 servers to playback a fake April fools addition to the end just to cover up the fact thats it works. :D

Or maybe the government sent a message on this board to say that the oil companies added the end to the show to hide the fact that this is possible...but that the oil companies didn't want us to find out....I think i just got lost in the 4th dimension, some were east of Route 40

You got me! I just wish I would have waited till the end of the show before sending the link to my engineering buddies after seeing Dave Randolph's lightgun project. I hope my physics professor has a sense of humor :)

great episode... I didn't realise it was an april fools until I decided to check the PDF while watching it... I was really interested in seeing how the free energy worked. I thought it took a while to load what I thought was gonna be one page of text and diagrams, instead I ended up with that image... you had me going until then...

bad form. If your show is not released on apr. 1, you dont get to do an april fools episode.
SHAME ON YOU!
[Edit]
And shame on revision 3 in general. Its not April Fools Season, its April Fools Day. Get it right or dont do it at all.
Yeah it's hard to play a joke on a specific day when you are a weekly show.

I know this was an April fools day episode. But, It was hard to take it seriously when Dave botched the percent change calculations.

I think his point was, if you aren't coming on that day then don't do ANY jokes. Though, they always could have done the jokes and then had a real project.

This is my first post, and I wanted to ask Patrick Norton and Dave Randolph if they increased the amount of 'nintendo guns' would it mean that you also get more power for the LED to shine up more?
Think about it. You have a single light source, but have multiple power production, therefore a brighter LED.
It is worth the try.
But then again... it just sucks as an april fools joke T_T

Wow, it pays to watch the entire episode.
Just tried the Mountain Dew trick tonight. Very bummed when nothing happened. Even told my friends it 'worked' just because I saw someone do it on the internet. I immediatly got on the forums and figured out that I'm a sucker.
I watched the beginning of the show back when it was released. Needless to say, I've been swamped with school work and just now got around to trying it. Next time ill be watching till the end...
Thanks for the mentos thing guys....! Really, my wife overheard me listening to my geek stuff and immediately tried this. Well, my laptop is sticky and her new HP one is dead and I'm probably going to get ants on the brand new porch... thanks for spending my next paycheck.
Not cool.

Though there was that one time when I was much younger, that I was throwing a foam basketball back and forth with my dad, and I accidentally nailed a can of cherry coke dead on....and it promptly dumped all over the telephone. :P That phone never once worked right since then! http://www.bakercountyonline.com/md-2389/icon_laugh.gif

Good luck with that.
This was an episode that is over three years old ... and was released as an APRIL FOOLS JOKE.
And if you believe the scam that is Bedini ... I suggest you invest all your money in the fabled Bedini Circuit/Motor. Better yet, send me all your money, and I'll build you one. I guarantee that what I build you will generate as much free energy as the Bedini model.
