Whether your in retail gaming or actually make games for a living, post it!

I currently work in the "R-Zone" at Toys "R" Us and am pretty much the go-to guy for gaming info.

i think it would be cool to get into the gaming business. i work in criminal law now but to get into a game company - or other tech - legal department would be cool.

I used to work for gamestop as one of the managers in the store for over a year but after seeing all the shady shit and how the corp treated customers and employees and fucking with everyone I could not take the place anymore(people I worked with were fine...it was the corp of EB games/Gamestop that is run by asshole douchebags) I finally quit.

I will never set one foot in that place EVER EVER again.

Took my business to a better franchise Gamestore that..Gamestops competition. I get that same 10% card for free, cheaper prices no predorder pushing (but can preorder of course but no limit to how little or how much)
They let you try games in the store before buying..sell older stuff and often get rare PSone games sometimes even new..sell new games and systems as well as retro stuff and repair systems..and Gamestop can't buy them..they are franchised. http://playntrade.com/locations/

I love gaming and may work in the industry again one day but it won't be in retail but something much better.

I've most certainly always wanted to. I have been literally gaming since I was 2 and still do.I've done a lot of map making and small modding here and there.

I applied for a few places at gaming stores, but ended up getting a job at a cinema.

My advice is don't go for a job in an industry you like but at a low position doing menial tasks - it's kills the magic. I loved cinema, and still do, but I can't go to mine even though we get free tickets because it feels too much like work. It has lost the magic. I've been to the projector room, I've cleaned hundreds of sessions, scrubbed carpet of vomit, made popcorn - and it's just killed it for me.

Before I knew how crap a job it was I was tempted to be a games tester, but testing business software is far more enjoyable and pays better. I did however work at Future Zone, before they were bought by Electronics Boutique, which in turn was bought by Game (in the UK this is). It wasn't a bad job, but it wasn't exactly stimulating either and you had to deal with some seriously smelly customers.

I I get that same 10% card for free,)

I flirted with the girl behind the counter when she offered me that card, I said no way, but she gave me the card anyway.

So you were charged the 15$
since the only way to give it away is to scan it and enter the pin...esp with managers counting the receipts and tills and they would find out if she gave it away and fired her the next shift.

Possibly. I haven't been back there since to see if she still works there. Her workmates saw her doing it and teased her about it. What good is the card to me anyway? Why do I want to be part of the 'edge' ? Do I get discounts after I do a certain number of trade-ins or something ?

I work on X-Play for G4. I'm the guy that has to digitize the video of people playing the games being reviewed. Some times you can tell when it's an intern and they have no idea what they're doing, especially when they play Wii. I haven't gotten to play any demos myself though, they have a secret lair located miles underground for that.

Yeah, I kind of got that impression. It's understandable, I was a big TSS fan back in the day so I know TechTV would beat G4 in a fight.
But it's the best geek job for production in LA, if I was in San Francisco I'd try to work for REV3.

Indeed would be awesome to work for Rev3 and while I hate the network G4 can't blame someone esp since we are close to the same age getting hired by the company behind the scenes..I'm sure it pays well and has some nice benifits.
Hopefully Rev3 gets a video game show soon and you can apply then :)

My brother works for CBS since 1989 and going in and out of that place....turns out to be quite a average place to visit with my bro.
Then again seeing the same sets over and over loses it's appeal quite fast.

I'm just glad that X-PLay stopped being SUPER SARCASTIC. Adam and Morgan seem more "real" now.

I liked super sarcastic Adam and Morgan, but I think it's a little more realistic and true to their actual personalities now. Morgan's less bitchy and Adam's less downtrodden, but you still get the flashes of great sarcastic humour. I like it this way too.

I don't work in the computer gaming industry, but I am currently doing some freelance writing work for a couple of roleplaying games. It's not my main career, but my full time job is quiet enough that I can do them both at the same time. Kinda.

The closest I can claim is that my good friend Keaven works at EA Mythic on Warhammer Online (he's even credited in this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCj56gz4mtQ) of footage from the beta). When he got the job last summer, he was promptly informed by all of his geek friends that we would be living (or at least working) vicariously through him. Although now that I think about it, I probably wouldn't have already pre-ordered the Collector's Edition if he didn't work there...

All the geek stores wouldn't hire me because I wouldn't bs. And because I knew more than all the managers. Sucks having knowledge and not just being a silly peon.

I wouldn't have guessed Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer actually worked in criminal law.

I worked a year at a apple store and sold one game....the Sims...
I didn't give really good advice because the guy surprised me when he asked me where the games were

Well, I was a manager at Blockbuster for 8 years, up until this past summer.

I know it's not a game specialty store, but I did get my grubby little hands on some good deals for previously-played games (my 15% employee discount, plus whatever sale was going on, like 2 for $20)! Thus, I have a fair amount of PS2 games. I even got to use the re-surfacing machine, to make sure I got clean discs.

You know, come to think of it, I STILL haven't played some of those games! I guess I've been sucked into the HD universe of PS3...

Anybody want to buy some PS2 games? (half-kidding) ;)
