Am I the only one who feels a little weird about it? I always loved that Rev3 has kinda stayed off politics, so its odd to see this sponsorship.

A military career SHOULD be an apolitical decision. I was this >< close to being in the RAAF as an aeronautics engineer - not for political reasons, but because it is an awesome career choice.

Well, you have to consider that the air force really isn't politics. The only real political connection is your commander in chief is your president (I'm a Canuck). But a lot of innovations came from the air force. NASA actually owes a lot of their progress if not their existence to the air force.

The Air Force needs geeks to. I'd be more worried about the aggressive religious promotion in the Air Force before I'd worry about politics. Joining the armed services is both honorable and proper. People should let the current state of politics discourage them from a promising career. Most careers in the Air force for the technically inclined are not combat positions.

OK, I had none of the "political" questions about the Air Force ad on Systm.

I was just wondering whether that was really a shot from outside a real rocket and if so, was it sped up?

Probably so, because I don't believe we can break orbit in under 30 seconds.

But then again I'm not a "rocket surgeon." lol.

Yeah no political quips from me, just me getting excited every time i hear them thanking the Airforce and going "Ooooh! Rocket time!"

If it hadn't been for my vision keeping me from joining, I'd be in the Air Force to this day. My grandfather and cousins served, and after hearing a few of the stories... I wanted to check it out for myself. So many opportunities out there, people are missing out on!

The US Air Force is willing to spend $$ sponsoring a tech show. Their ad shows technology in use. They are looking for people interested in technology. It is a simple and clean ad. I haven't seen any mention of politics in that spot.

It's a tasteful ad and not pushy at all. It helps keep Rev3 going so I say, Cool!

Besides it's a cool rocket video!

The only thing missing is the stargate. ;) (Seriously, the air force LOVED SG-1.)

We need pilots to drop million dollar missiles. Who better to do it than someone who watches SYSTM. :)

Considering that the military is moving to unmanned remotely piloted vehicles, YES, kids who grew up playing video games should make great pilots in a few years. The only issue would be discipline.

We also need those who have minds like some who have posted on this forum. Never know if someone from this place might be Academy material.

Where's my chocolate milk? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jl3rfV__v50) ... yep. I fear for the military of the future.

No, someone that watches Systm would figure out a way to make said missile do some crazy shit that would serve no practical purpose....like turning it into a giant FM transmitter which would bombard the enemy with boyband music. :D

edit: You know, I wonder if Dave could control one with a show controller. :D

If you let him play with one, yes he can.

(Note, all my assertions are based on direct questioning of my brother, PVC Walters, ANG (He's in signal corps...he got a geek job. I'm so proud.))
Politics is the furthest thing from mind in the military. Its a job. Its a cool job. Its a dangerous job. Its a job that some people appreciate you for and some hate you for. The ones who hate you for it (in his opinion) are the ones who treat these employees like elected officials.

The ad doesn't try and change anyone's opinions on the orders they take from the civilian leadership. They just are looking for people to fix planes, run cables, and chant unintelligibly in marching cadence.

In the real-world Cheyenne Mountain complex, there is actually a security door with blacked out windows labeled "Stargate Command". Behind it is a broom cupboard. From Stargate Wiki (http://stargate.wikia.com/wiki/Cheyenne_Mountain)

So at least the US military have a sense of humor ;)

as a Rev3 fan who is in the AF i thought it was pretty cool to see.

BTW, they really helped me out by adding the flash player to the shows. Last time i was in iraq i had to do some shady torrenting to get the shows since the direct downloads were blocked.

Everybody is off subject I don't see were it matters that they have a Air Force ad. Either if your for the war or not.... that wouldn't make the Air Force wrong just the Pres.(If you see a problem with the war. Don't wanna start a political feud in the forums) We need the air force army navy...etc and i think most people that think about it can see that regardless of Operation Freedom Fighter or what ever we are calling it this week(By that I mean no disrespect)

They actually interviewed someone that works there that brought that up on the "Ark of Truth" dvd.

The Air Force picked a great place to advertise. You all are the people that they want and need. Having been in the Air Force for 10 years I can say there is nothing political about what you do for a job. Well, theres the office politics, but you find that everywhere and the OP wasn't talking about that. ;)

btw - Check out the RC-135, it's a Systm episode waiting to happen. If they let you get close to it....

Definitely sped up, and quite a bit. Hate to bring up bad memories, but the Challenger exploded a full minute and 12 seconds after launch, so 30ish seconds wouldn't be anywhere near orbit yet.

I'm not sure, next time nasa does a launch, look at the live stream on their site. There is a very simalar video from the shuttle. Thie thing is, it actually gets very high very quickly, hten the last bit of ascent takes ages...

I don't see what the issue with an Air Force ad is. Even if it was pollitally related, Systm really has nothing to do with politics, anyways. Seems to make it a non-issue.

About half the professors at the CS department of my college have US Airforce or Navy heritage to their background, leading to very rich careers in their field of study. Many of them had never left research labs in their areas of study.

There are many reasons they chose this route. Some just wanted to serve, or to go to officer academies for one reason or another out of high school and winded up gravitating toward technology. Others always wanted a technical or engineering education, but were not so blessed as I am to be able to afford a Bachelor's or Graduate level education, which was provided to them by the military. Other people actually had research interests that the military also has, especially in the areas of artificial intelligence. Many of these applications are actually for more or less peaceful purposes, like making AIs that can optimize human designed circuits beyond human ability.

This being said, I have extreme ethical concerns as an engineer personally in the study or design of technology with only harmful applications and therefore would never personally work in such areas. But I have no desire to impose my not entirely logical or scientific beliefs on others. I can clearly see the need for a military and defense, one that is as advanced as possible at that, I just do not wish to participate, at least at this time. But that being said, I really think the Airforce could provide an excellent career opportunity to certain individuals, especially those into science and technology who society has overlooked in terms of opportunity.
