Question about RTSes (inspired by Diggnation #143)

When the discussion of Red Alert 3 came about, and Alex's gripes with RTSes in general, I immediately thought of a freeware RTS that I've been playing lately: TA Spring.

Spring is a freeware recreation of Total Annihilation, a classic RTS from Cavedog (Who later went on to make Supreme Commander, which was just released in stores, IIRC). I dunno, something about building robot armies and blowing up other robot armies..........it just works for me. :)

The game is available at http://spring.clan-sy.com/ , Windows and Linux versions are available.


Does anyone here also play freeware RTS games? I'd like to know what all is out there (I know I've missed a few here and there).

Not to drag this off-topic, but Supreme Commander is definitely the ULTIMATE RTS. Quite frankly, I'm amazed that Kevin doesn't play. (And Kevin, if you're reading this, I will gladly challenge you to a game!) SC is definitely what C&C3 should have been. (Unlike C&C3, SC is actually STABLE and the gameplay isn't radically altered with each patch to make it even more sucktastic.)

When Alex said that the last RTS he played was he thinks Warcraft II, I instantly thought "And that's why he doesn't like them." Not because of Warcraft II, but because he hasn't experienced any modern RTS. It'd be like saying you don't like FPS, and the last one you played was Quake 2.

one of my employees plays company of heroes, and I've played the Battle For Middle Earth games... There's also C&C, but eveyone already knows about those.

Age of empires was also cool IMO.

Not sure whats Free...I also run Mac so i dont play like anything now(wow here an there but thats not rts)

Sadly i can't remember seeing any awesome freeware rts-games. Someone should start an opensource rts project.
