NOTE: i realize it's April 1 but i promise this is not a rickroll.

it's called "The Ascent of Man"

This is a 14-part series from (i think the 70's) BBC, hosted by this guy Jacob Bronowski who seems to know everything there is to know in the world. I have re-watched it a million times just to hear his insights into science, philosophy, religion, etc. in one episode, he talks about how he knew Einstein and his contemporaries personally.

This is a link to all the videos on google video. they're out of order, but if you watch them in order he goes through man's history in order.

this is a 2 minute, particularly powerful excerpt:

one of my favorite quotes from it is an episode where he's standing on easter island among the statutes, and says "people ask all kinds of irrelevant questions about them - who built them? how did they get here? how did they make them.

the real question is...why are they all the same?"

i promise, watching only one would be worth your time.

Damn. I was hoping it was going to be the video about flying penguins they posted today. This sounds interesting though.
