My brother and I would both proudly call ourselves geeks. However, to look at our lifestyles I think you might find it hard to call them very similar. Our common interests are quite broad; We love our gadgets and technology, such as our MP3 players, computers, internet, etc. How do we differ? Well I'm a soda geek and he's a wine geek.
I kinda made up these terms to describe two different geeky lifestyles. To properly describe them I do need to use stereotypes and I realise that you can't very well tar everyone with the same brush. But I think it's an interesting way to think about things anyway.
Basically, wine geeks are more into Macs, going abroad, obscure indie films, cutting edge bands, a nice glass of wine, fashion etc etc. Soda geeks are more into PCs and consoles (and of course, video games), gaming, pizza and soda, TV shoes, popular movies and may not be so into the newest look.
I'm not trying to say that one is better than the other, just that they are different. :) And of course, there is bleed over. I'm not saying that liking video games precludes you from being fashionable or that just because you watched Die Hard 4.0 that you don't like a glass of wine after work. They're just things that seem to go together.
So I was wondering what you guys thought of this? Is it true or is it a load of bollocks? Would any of you describe yourself as a wine geek or a soda geek, or perhaps as somewhere between the two?

I guess outwards I'm really a "soda geek", but like you said, there's just so much outside of that to note it really doesn't hold much weight as being an accurate description of me.

I guess I am more of the beer geek then ...
I travel - domestically, and internationally.
I am more into PC's (built my own watercooling rig many years ago), but have Mac envy.
I have no sense of fashion.
I like wine.
I like softdrink.
I like beer.
I like food in general - from a chef's sampling menu with wine pairings, down to pizza by the slice.
I love TV.
I like popular movies - but stray into the indie and foreign films ocassionally.

I should have read this thread before voting. I like soda more than wine and voted accordingly. D'oh!
I am into Macs, indie movies, cutting edge bands, consoles, gaming, pizza and soda, popular movies and may not be so into the newest look. Where's the choice for me? Oh, it was right there the whole time? D'oh!

I can't just pick one because everything there applies to me except for Mac <3.

Really? I'm the first person to vote Wine Geek?
I guess I'm "cheap" wine though. Still can't afford a mac, as much as I would love one.

I would so buy those!! I bet they would cause neck problems though, staring at your feet all day. :p
I can see what your saying and know people who would fit more into one category then the other, but I find I'm a pretty good mix of both.
ME:
*Love my MAC, but spend half my life on a PC and supporting other peoples PC's
*Enjoy traveling (when I have the cash)
*Not a fan of wine...and not a huge coke drinker either.
*Try to eat healthy, but love a good pizza everyonce in a while
*I like popular movies, but enjoy seeing some indie movies as well. Hell I can find something I like in just about any movie. I can watch some pretty cheesy stuff and still enjoy it.
*I try to look decent, but am far from fashionable and really don't like shopping that much.
*Love video games, though I wish I had more time and money to spend on them
*Love some good Television, though I've found from watching TRS that my TV habits don't necessarily line up with many other peoples. Does anyone out there actually watch Bones on FOX? Stars: David Boreanaz (aka: Angel) and Emily Deschanel

I guess I am majority soda geek. One, I am a hardcore addict of caffeine and I rarely drink-I really can't handle Anakin if not sober, though there are times were I think a good stiff drink might help :)
But ultimately I am a pop culture addict. Though I will watch obscure indy films nothing is better than a big blow 'em movie. And if Bruce Willis is it, well hell, pass the popcorn. I do like wine though, on those rare occasions when I do have a drink.
Oh, and by nature I dress in the classic style. Well cut suits or polo shirt and khakis. I am a preppy for the most part. Unless I go dancing, then, well, I won't describe those outfits.

Been watching since the previews before the first episode (have it on DVD too.)
That said, I don't think I fit into anything. Maybe "Water pseudogeek"...'cause I seem to go along with a little bit of everything but I'm not a geek in regards to anything.

I'm more of a beer geek...or even a coffee/tea geek, but not Soda or Wine :p
I do like Wine alright, but don't know enough to consider myself knowledgable.

I do like Wine alright, but don't know enough to consider myself knowledgable.Secret to being a wine geek is knowing what you like, and not letting so called experts tell you what you should be drinking or why what you are drinking is crap.
I have two particular favourite wines (both red) - Wynn's Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, and Banrock Station Shiraz (Syrah). One costs over $30 a bottle if you can get it in the US, the other costs $5.99 ... and both are equally enjoyable. Of course, you should occassionally try what the experts are telling you to expand your experience .. yo might find something you like even better (try the Banrock Shiraz over summer, but throw it in the fridge for 30 min or so before opening it to bring it down to cellar temp ... which is about 16C/64F ... which is NOT room temp).

Hmm. This is an interesting theory, but I definitely don't fit into an exclusive category...
Let's see,
I am a:
-Mac girl
-love video games
-don't like wine or soda. (boring water for me!)
-enjoy some mainstream movies, love indies (especially foreign)
-Love, love, love to travel! (just back from London! yay!)
-I actually love clothes and fashion, not a crazy shoe or bag girl though.
-Eating is one of my favorite things! Especially amazing food. I'll try anything though.
-Would have to say comic books too. My dad is a C.B junkie and I used to love going to the C.B shop with him and reading comics with him when I was little. I don't buy my own, though.
-Umm...I also tend to like older men.. ;) ;) (who are also a little geeky, but totally rad!) Which side would that be? :D

I didn't realise Bruce Willis did porno, good for him.
I really fit into both categories;
-I have a PC but being a designer, I'd really like a mac. I pretty much only play games on console (though I have a PS3 which is certainly the fine wine to the 360's cheap beer, flame on!).
-I love travelling to strange foreign lands, but also love to veg out on the couch.
-I find most blockbusters are terrible (loathed transformers) and would rather some indy action (struggling with southland tales though).
-Most TV is crap, I enjoy weird stuff like adult swim.
-I like finding new bands and hate most of the stuff they play on the radio, love to see live music.
-Don't like wine, love beer but I'm snobbish about it (American=Fail, Belgian=Win) and also love me some soda.
-Love all sorts of food from Greek to Indian, Italian to Middle Eastern, though nothing tops a pie with sauce.
-As far as fashion goes, well I have a clothing label so, you know, I try...
I guess looking into it, I lean more towards the wine geek side. There is a band in Australia called TISM (it stands for This Is Serious Mum) who had a song called "Whatareya?" which asked the question "What are ya? Yob or Wanker?" this poll kind of reminds me of that.

I don't drink much wine or soda (No soda, I do drink wine on occasion), but I think that's irrelevant to everyones choices. I'm not sure I understand all this "coffee geek" and "beer geek" talk. Are you going to give some qualifications? The liquid is just the name.
Minus you, of course, Token. Hilarious beer geek description.

I will try to sum up why I probably would be considered a "soda geek", or just post some info on part of who I am. Here are some bits and pieces:
- I love programming. I love the feeling of creating something that works, and even more so the feeling of creating something that works really well, or perhaps is extremely original while still retaining application and usability. Most of the time I don't have to show my project to anyone or even use it much myself to be satisfied. Creating is the important part.
- I love figuring out how stuff works. It can be useless information that will never make anyone's life easier, and it can be stuff that is good to know. The fun lies in exploring the system and seeing what it's all about.
- With my love for figuring stuff out comes my love for applying it in competitive activities, mostly computer/video games. I grew up playing games very seriously and though I have left the most serious avenues behind me I don't think I will ever be able to leave it completely.
Though I am not sure this is something you'd associate more with "soda geeks" than the other categories...
- I like to amass knowledge. It can be about a wide range of stuff. I really like learning, mostly out of my own will and while doing my own searching for the knowledge. Together with this comes a tendency to want to perfect my language, writing more so than speech, both Swedish and English. Even though I can occasionally brush a correction off with "Hey, English is not my native language.", I always try to make note of what I did wrong and work actively to avoid making the same mistake again.
Art...
- I find more abstract art (or at least what I have seen of it, which admittedly isn't much) to be boring and most of the times without any meaning to me. I just have problems seeing it, I guess.
- I love movies, and what I expect (or demand) from movies changes a lot with my mood, like I imagine it does for most people. I rarely go away unsatisfied from a movie with what I perceive to be a real and honest message I can agree with and get on at least one level. A big action movie is usually a gamble with fairly bad odds for me liking it, if you take the whole spectrum of moods into account.
- I listen to pretty much all kinds of music. I'm not usually in to the latest, very hip stuff. I usually get music by recommendation or usage in media. One particular genre I'd say I have a special love for is chip music (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiptune) (or "chiptunes"), with emphasis on keeping the feel of the genre alive; not necessarily the technology.
