I just wanted to make this thread so that we could talk about the actual show and not our differing opinions about the show.
So say anything you want about the story, characters , whatever of The Wire. I want to hear it from all of you. I'll start off with something that I've been wanting to talk about.
[SPOILER]
Omar's Downfall
I wanted to talk about the way Omar is portrayed. The show is supposed to be very realistic, but I think that that doesn't mean that the show can't have sort of...plays into literature.
I think Omar is a very...magical being. What I mean is, what killed him wasn't little Kennard from early on in the series who used to shout in the middle of the streets that he wanted to be Omar.
What killed Omar was the fact that he broke his word.
Omar has always had this supernatural aura to him. He was a badass who always stood tough and he managed to rob some of the most powerful drug dealers in Baltimore.
Omar respects Sunday as a day of rest.
Omar never swears.
Omar always keeps his word.
When Bunk gets him out of jail, he makes Omar promise him that he will never kill anyone again. And Omar makes that promise.
Certain events happen that make him want to break that promise so he comes back to very much break it.
After this, Omar jumps out of the building. Breaks his leg. His aura is gone and he just looks like a sad ass man. He doesn't even really resemble Omar anymore. After he murders someone, he gets killed the next episode in quite a dishonorable way.
I think that even though Omar had to die sometime or another, he was made to have a sort of supernatural quality to him for the sake of analysis.
And not only did we have our favorite character taken from us- someone who became really important to us, someone who we thought really mattered- he was taken away from us and then shown to us that he didn't really have any worth.
Just a stick-up boy.
He wasn't even thought important enough to be put in the obituaries.
So unimportant that the name tag on his body bag was mis-labeled.
It was really powerful.
