From nowhere, you produce billows of smoke out of your mouth… it’s like you’ve manufactured smoke in your lungs.

Watch and download here. (http://revision3.com/scamschool/pilot/)

Hey guys, not to try to screw you over, but this effect was marketed by Daniel Garcia under the title Warning. You might want to check out who owns the performing rights as it is a very testy subject in the magic community. This effect used to be sold at www.ellusionist.com but was soon pulled because of the potential health hazards that were never fully verified. Hope this helps.

so... post some youtube vids of you guys trying the human chimney, and I'll help you get it to work as big as possible!

Rainwolf
04-07-2008, 08:30 AM
I've gotten it to work rather well, but the primary dangers seem to be burnt finger tips and that initial kick when you inhale it efficiently. It also seems that having your lungs as empty as possible when you inhale it helps.

Camera isn't in here and it's pretty damn late or I'd Youtube it.

Edit:Also the first few matches my ceiling fan slowly spinning was pushing it all away from me, but the setting was so low I couldn't feel it... so try to avoid any drafts people!

shwooddotcom
04-07-2008, 08:38 AM
yeah, that's a good point that we didn't have time to address in the episode... even the smallest draft will blow the sulfur-shit away from you. Pretty much, if it isn't burning, it isn't working.

Rainwolf
04-07-2008, 08:45 AM
Also, as far as the workings are concerned I think you may be looking at sulfur dioxide turning into sulfuric acid when it comes into contact with liquids in our lungs. Potentially hazardous, but you've been doing this the longest Shwood, so if you die we can all... you know.. cut back.

Edit: I'm so bored and can't sleep.. hehehe. >.o

That's not so good a scam, though, since it can be legally treated as fraud. Last month, LAist had a story (http://www.laist.com/2008/03/19/youtube_del_tac.php) (which was Dugg, of course) about the guy who scammed Del Taco and ended up serving 30 days. He got lucky, they could have given him 7 months. Plus, it shows absolutely NO creativity and I know 'Shwood is gonna show us much more educational stuff!

P.S. Shwood, remember that late night video chat with Zack last week? That was my living room. I'm the guy who needed to shave. The show does indeed look great.

4/7/2008 - 75th Anniversary of tThe Repeal. In celebration, Anheuser Busch sends a case straight to the White House, ATTN: President George W. Bush (yeah, cuz there's a recovering alcoholic who needs a drink!), AND the world famous Revision3 internet television network kicks off a fantastic new show dedicated to the procurement of libations through trickery, social-engineering, and good old fashioned sleight-of-hand. W sees the pilot episode, in which the host seemingly blows smoke from nothing, and craps himself in amazement.

Coincidence? Oh no, I think not. I do believe that the host worked very closely with the folks at Rev3 to pick this very date. And I salute them! Drink up, gang! Why? Because we can! (well, those of us of age in our respective countries)

As to if it's healthy or not...

Here's some info on what a match is made of http://www.madehow.com/Volume-3/Match.html

And I think they people that'd usually have matches just lying around in their pockets are dieing from much worse smoke inhalation every day.

People inhale sulfur hexaflouride (there's sulfur in the matches) to make them talk deep (the reverse of helium). http://msds.chem.ox.ac.uk/SU/sulfur.html

Potassium chlorate will irritate the lungs. http://ptcl.chem.ox.ac.uk/~hmc/hsci/chemicals/potassium_chlorate.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antimony
"Antimony and many of its compounds are toxic. Clinically, antimony poisoning is very similar to arsenic poisoning. In small doses, antimony causes headache, dizziness, and depression. Larger doses cause violent and frequent vomiting, and will lead to death in a few days."

Thats funny, after seeing the show I grabbed some matches and tried it multiple times (I emptied a box of 32) and didn't cough once. I don't smoke anything, never have. The worst part is the taste, but it goes away after a few drinks.

I loved the first episode..

Someone on here said that this guy was fake..... Although I like this show a lot I will have to agree with this statement. Before I get flamed please let me explain...

I went to the live Diggnation in St. Louis where he did a preshow with fire and Mr. Happy Pants. During the Mr. Happy Pants section he brought a girl from the audience onto the stage. There he starting saying stuff. However he would say something that would make him stop and laugh. Almost like catch is breathe and stop laughing. We all thought it was hilarious.

However when I got home, I went to look him up on youtube. I found one video of him with Mr. Happy pants, but it was at some other place (not St. Louis.)

While waiting I noticed that he stopped and did his fake laughing in the same point in the show as he did in St. Louis.

That is when I realized that it was all an act from the beginning. I was bummed out. But then I remember that this is a guy who wrote a book about how to scam drinks in a bar.

So anyway, that is just a little information for everyone to ponder on.

Still, this guy rocks, and I look foward to seeing future episodes.

While waiting I noticed that he stopped and did his fake laughing in the same point in the show as he did in St. Louis.

I, too, realized this when I checked out his site. However, I don't think this makes him a "fake." That's a pretty accusational word. Recognize it's a part of the act. Have you ever seen Jeff Dunham? He's praised as a great ventriloquist (and Brian, I hope you don't think I'm comparing your art to ventriloquism), but do you think he's ever surprised by what the puppets say? You can't tickle yourself, and you can't be surprised by what your own puppets say.

I had fun seeing the show, and being faced with the video showing that it was an act doesn't change that.

shwooddotcom
04-09-2008, 06:06 AM
That's a nice parallel, Astx813... and accurate, too.

Yeah, it's in the script that whenever possible, it should be tough to get through the Mr. H routine without cracking up. But I promise that the laughs aren't fake. (I tried fake laughing and it doesn't take. People can tell an insincere laugh from a parsec away)

Instead, I just lock eyes with the girl volunteer, and try my damnedest not to smile. Like we're in church and one of us just farted. Like even though we both know how ridiculous the setup is, it's some how very important that we get through this without cracking up.

...and then I lose it. I totally lose composure, and at that moment it's totally sincere.

I don't know how to describe it... It's like some kinda hypnosis thing... I just look, and try my damnedest not to crack my shit up, and before I know it, I'll have tears in my eyes.

Now it doesn't work every time. Sometimes I just have to move on at a decent pace, or occasionally, fake the reaction (as I think it might have been in the youtube clip, which may look insincere...) But in those times where everything's right... when me and the crowd are all feeling that same vibe (as it was at diggnation), it's like magic to me.

So is it in the script? Yes. Is it fake? God, I hope not.

man, I'm trying but I don't get near the amount of smoke that you do. The 2 ways I have for recording video don't seem to capture smoke too well so without a large amount of smoke it just looks like I'm making my "O" face.

This is great stuff! I'm loving the show so far, I can't wait for more episodes.

For anyone wondering what exactly causes that 'smoke' to form, I'll present my little theory based on a science experiment that looks eerily similar to what's going on here. As I was watching the human chimney episode, I recalled something I saw many years ago. I used to watch Bill Nye The Science Guy religiously back when I was a kid (15 or so years ago? Jebus, I'm starting to feel old :P ). Anyway, it was an episode about the atmosphere, and he conducted an experiment to create a cloud inside one of those large water cooler bottles. He struck a match, dropped it into the bottle, and used a pneumatic gun.... thing. I'm not sure what they're called, but I know it's a tool used by plumbers to unclog drains. He used it to quickly pressurize and depressurize the bottle, which causes a "cloud" to instantaneously form inside the bottle. It's cool to watch, the cloud just literally pops into existance before your eyes. This page (http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/features/columns/?article=bnclouds) explains what goes on in that experiment. I'm guessing this trick and that experiment both use the same principles of cloud formation to create the effect, but use different ways to coax the water droplets to condense on the smoke particles.

Loved the show, huge fan already. Have you ever tried it using some bigger matches like those extra long matches? I tried this morning and although it was a bit dicey I think because of the way they burn (there's so much phosphorus that the phosphorus doesn't ignite instantaneously) if you get it, you get a HEAP of smoke. Also, when I do it I don't really feel much of a burn.

Keep up the great work

-Nik

Yeah, it's in the script that whenever possible, it should be tough to get through the Mr. H routine without cracking up. But I promise that the laughs aren't fake. (I tried fake laughing and it doesn't take. People can tell an insincere laugh from a parsec away.)
here's me and brian on oct. 4th last year. it LOOKS like when he was laughing. hahaha.

This is awesome, I smoke cigars so I try to always carry a small box of matches with me, I just tried the chimney and the jack-o-lantern tricks, burned my lip a bit on the jock-o-lantern but I'm getting better at it.

I can pull of the chimney but I've got to get used to the burning in my nose when I inhale. I almost flinch when I do it so it kind of gives it a way. O well, I'll have to work on it some more later.

For me, it's the opposite. My first time I used some long matches (http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/6018/matchboxpiclongstrikemapr9.jpg) and it was impossible to not make it obviously that it stings when you light it. I tried it later with some matchbook matches, and not only could I hide the initial sniff, but the smoke looked way better.

Guess it's just a matter of personal taste ;D

I have a ide or a twist for this trick. Maybe its been done but anyway.

You start by saying something like:
Does anyone have a pair of matches? Good. And Anyone have a cigarette? Good.
Talk to the smoker: Do you want to help me with this. Im gona let you light up the cigarette for me.
Talk to all: Im not really a smoker cos my mom tells me that she will kill me if i even put one cigarette to my mouth. So I have tried som other ways and it works. Look
Do: Put the cigarette in the smokers mouth. Strike the match and inhale as the original human chimney. Let him get a good fire in the cigarette and take it from his mouth and show it to all. then we have some alternative, take your pick or make up your own.
1. put the cigarette in your ear (not the hot end in your ear.......)
2. put the cigarette in your ass or just the crack up to you (not the hot end in your ass.......)
3. open your fly and let you johnsson smoke (not the hot end in your pants.......)

And ofcourse breath out the (dangerous) smoke from your mouth.

Fun? ok.

I have a second twist. Strike the match and pull put your pants if you can and drop the ligting match in your underwear. breath out.... I havent tried this but i dont think it would burn you :-) Who is first to try?

Good or bad?

Good. Very good. Freaking epic, if someone would post video of this. I can virtually guarantee an appearance on scam school to whoever gets good video of this take on the trick.

I have been working on this trick with the cigarette modification....I tried it out live for the first time wed night.

I set up the back story telling them my mom smoked when she was younger but stopped when I was a baby, she told me smoking was bad and that she would kill me if a cigarette ever touched my lips.

I then asked a friend for a cigarette, and told him I was going to light it for him. I wanted him to get a few puffs off of it and hand it to me.

I then did the strike and inhaled the cancerous material into my lungs (it still burns a little), and lit his cigarette, he took 2 puffs, I then grabbed the cigarette put it next to my ear (looked like I stuck in in my earhole and shook my head.

I then handed him back the cigarette and exhaled the smoke.

It went over well, I still have some hitches to work out, but It is a great variation!!!

by the way, I happened up on bar none, the ULTIMATE matches to use for this trick a few weeks ago. I'll take a picture of the package and upload them. The smoke was RIDICULOUS.

I saw that! But the effect was so subtle I couldn't decide if it was a real human chimney, or if the effect was just supposed to be her putting the match out with her fingers... Would love to get a judges ruling from this crowd as well..

Wow, tough call, coulda used a different angle. I'd say it's too much like she's inhaling the smoke AFTER she puts the light out, not before.

How I stumbled across here was a night of random clicking on YouTube. I watched a bunch of SS videos and started reading older posts on the forum. Now I'm enrolling in Scam School for my degree in Social Engineering.

Sorry for doing a bit of necromancy but I figured I might as well start from the beginning and proceed to the end, trying trick after trick.

I found out about Scam School about a week ago, viewing the archives I found that most of the tricks use props like cards, coins and matches. Since then I never go out without any of them.

I've used up countless of matches watching them burn and just getting used to the smell of sulfur. A couple of minutes ago I worked up the courage to actually try this trick and succeeded on the first try, although it brought tears to my eyes the amount of smoke coming from my mouth was amazing.

The matches I used were from the swedish brand "Solstickan". A note, the matches I had were probably a couple of years old, I don't know whether this had an effect on it or not.

Cheers
