We all hate Wizard magazine, OK. I get it, but rather than lament the "lack" of a good comic book magazine I implore you all to grab the recently released issue two of The Comic Foundry (http://www.comicfoundry.com/). A magazine that's quite simply everything that Wizard's not.

What I think makes this mag special is that they've taken the lad mag-esque format that Wizard tries to apply to comic books and actually applied it to comic books.

So what you get is a music section that dissects/reviews comic artist's album covers. A fashion section that shows you how to put together a Jimmy Olsen-style wardrobe and a video game section that interviews comic-creators about their favorite games.

Oh, you want comic book coverage? Well, this magazine has some of the best interviews I've read and some great, creative ways of framing the articles (an Ed Brubaker mad lib? Check. A Gabriel Ba/Fabio Moon interview where the twins answer questions for the other? Check and check.)

Support this mag, please!

I'll see if my LCS can get it in. They mention on their site that they are shipped through Diamond shouldn't be a problem.

Its a really great magazine, I got the first issue a few months back and I've been hoping they were going to do more, lots of potential and its the magazine that we need to have.

It could probably use more Humphrey Lee...

I say this because I'm a whore, and hope someone that works on the thing happens to read this forum. :D

Do you think we can just pick this up in Borders and whatnot too?

I'd be a good addition to any mag, except maybe Playgirl. The horror, the horror.

And just looking at the art style they chose to print on the cover of that magazine is already more "ballsy" than anything Wizard has done probably this decade, so I can tell I like this periodical already. I'll have to see if I can find an issue somewhere. Is it monthly or quarterly or what?

It's quarterly.

I don't think it's available in bookstores... at least not nation-wide... maybe a few here and there.

It is distributed through Diamond though, so go request it at your LCS.

Reading everything the website itself has to say tells me I'll really enjoy this magazine. Good stuff.

It's quarterly.

Not to knock the mag because they are self publishing but the first issue was out for San Diego last year and the second one is out now so it's more like slightly more frequent than annual at this point.

I picked it up at the shop today just so I can review it. I'll offer up my thoughts on it soon.

This is true. It's my understanding, though, that the first issue was a "test the water" type of thing to see if there would be interest and that issue 2 is the first kind of official issue.

From their website:
"It’s a quarterly magazine — We’ll be out in April, June, September and December"

"And Issue 3 is available for pre-order in the April Previews: APR084254"

i talked to my LCS about this today, they had never heard of this mag (but that doesn't mean anything, they don't carry too much stuff). Anyway, they said they would look into it for me and they will order an issue for me if they can.

I can't wait to hear if you guys liked it. I really want an alternative to Wizard and this looks like a great change of pace. the creator on the cover, rather than comic art, really sold me. it looks more like a music mag than a comic mag

I picked it up at my LCS today. I really liked the interview with Grant Morrison about Final Crisis. It's just fueling my excitement. :)

Does anyone read any other magazines (besides Wizard)?

Like Geek Monthly or the Comics Journal? I was curious about both of these.

Any others?

From what I've seen this looks to be as much a "geek lifestyle" magazine as a comic magazine (complete with drinking games). From what I've been hearing, Wizard is undergoing a major overhaul next issue (#200). Could what Wizard is doing make this mag obsolete?

I checked for it at Boarders and they didn't have it in, I think Comic shops are the only ones getting it since it is Diamond distributing it.

It's alright. Some more substantial articles would be nice. Aside from all the fluff pieces and sidebars.

I think it may be time we need a general Magazine thread so we can discuss our favorites, like Mustache Aficionado and this one. Granted I think it would be dominated by Wired Mag, but still I think it would be a good idea.

Do you mean comic magazines or magazines in general? As far as comics go, I recently picked up Comics Now, which seems to be pretty content heavy, if limited in scope. I think it was put together by the guys who do the Comic Geek Speak podcast.

Non comics: Wired, Games, Knucklebones, Cooks Illustrated, Bon Apetit, Gourmet, New Yorker, San Francisco. Sometimes the Economist, but it's pretty expensive.

Sounds like it might be cool. I'll check for it at the shop on Wednesday. They should have it. My shop carries a pretty heft mag selection.

It was just announced that The Comic Foundry was nominated for the Eisner for Best Comics-Related Periodicial/Journalism. Wizard was not.

I bought a subscription to it and I got the first two issues pretty fast, really fast. I'm checking out issue one right now, it has an Interview with Kristen Bell about Veronica Mars in it and well I like that. Also looking at the cover of the second issue, didn't know Matt Fraction was so sexy, must be that beard he's sporting.

Just finished pecking my way through both issues of it, I have to say I like the first issue far more then the second one. Issue one had a couple really meaty articles in it, the biggest being Sex + Superheroes. The second issue seemed to be just filled with blurbs and interviews, there is one thing about LARP'ers (Live Action Role Players for all who aren't on the down low) but really that’s not something I really want to read about (but will here in a bit).

Overall I think if they spend a little less time on the fashion, which the should keep in there just not as much, and do one less interview I think they could actually pull off a dynamite mag here. Glad I subscribed to it.
