In honor of Dunder Mifflin's grad re-opening it's a whole new week of general discussion. And this week, each post is either:

A. slathered in innuendo.
B. filled with hilarious work stories

So here's the thing ... I just discovered that my work birthday party is planned for tomorrow (April 11th). My birthday is May 19th. This is two years in a row where they missed my birthday by at least a month. What the hell do I have to do ... hang up copies of my W-2 with the birthdate field highlighted? They totally have no idea what month it's even in. I appreciate the thought and all ... but goddamn. I feel like Charlie Brown or something.

That is really some fantastic work! I would have never thought the bizarre fluidity of the Scud art would have been able to translate into CG.
Nice stuff.

He actually had some thoughts on that in his previous post:

As you can see, Schrab's not a huge fan of symmetry or staying "on model," which is part of what makes his drawings so kinetic, but gets a little confusing for someone trying to build a model of the character. I referenced a lot of different drawings to make sure everything was in the right place, most of them from the new books and the end of the original run, as the look of Scud changed a lot over time while Schrab's style evolved, and I prefer the newer "flat-top" Scud design. My one change was in the cylindrical joints at the elbows, knees, and ankles; I wanted to build them in such a way that they would actually "work" in reality so I interpreted them as real hinges. Another interesting thing is that Schrab, somewhere early in the run, appeared to have abandoned the illusion that Scud's head and arms are actually attached by anything to his body, which I always thought was really cool because it means there are no real laws regarding how those parts of his body deform. I built the model to reflect that as well.

I made a car paint shader for him. For some reason, I just always pictured him that way. It gives him a cool, like... "chrome action figure" look. I also took this opportunity to finally learn a little more about global illumination, since that was long overdue, and I think the end result here looks a hell of a lot more believable than my previous work. If only it didn't take twenty minutes to render one frame.

I know nothing about animation and compositing, so I find that stuff really interesting.

Wait.... Saskatoon is a real place?

I thought it was a made up place. You know, like Metropolis, Gotham, LA, or Eternia. The more you know, kids. The more you know.

From Wikipedia:

Saskatoon is located in central Saskatchewan, Canada, on the South Saskatchewan River, with a metro population of 233,923. Saskatoon is the most populous city in the province of Saskatchewan, and has been since the mid-1980s when it surpassed the provincial capital of Regina.[3] Residents of Saskatoon are called Saskatonians.

Saskatoon is often called the "City of Bridges" for its seven river crossings (it is also occasionally referred to as "The Paris of the Prairies", for the same reason). The name Saskatoon comes from the Cree inanimate noun "misâskwatômina," which refers to a sweet, violet-coloured berry which grows in the area. A long-time nickname for Saskatoon is "Hub City", while the name is also commonly abbreviated "S'toon". Following the release of the film Who Framed Roger Rabbit in 1988, the city became popularly known as "'Toontown", after a similarly named location in the film, although the nickname "'Toontown" had been in use in Saskatoon prior to the film's release. Another, less commonly used nickname is "POW City". POW stands for Potash, Oil, and Wheat.[4]

Saskatoon isn't real. It's located north of Metropolis. Superman can often be seen flying overhead. He once landed a falling 747 in the middle of Downtown Saskatoon's Route 35. He was heard to exclaim, "Who cares about Saskatoon? Metropolis' highways are more important."

Aquaman has a summer home located on the Eastern shore of Saskatoon. Spider-Man once webbed a bank robber to the famous, Saskatoon Squirrel statue in front of the local Municipality building.

Little Orphan Annie was gunned down on Saskatoon's South Main Street in 1974. She was involved in a Civil Rights protest that turned violent. April 18th was made into a Canadian Holiday in honor of the fallen Civil Rights activist.

Oh man! He just got Rick Astley on the phone. "How do you feel about this?" "I have to be positive. I have to take it as a compliment. I mean, I have a 16 year old daughter and this is getting her all sorts of 'street cred', I guess."

This just in: Chiang better than Cassaday, the people have voted.

But, apparently those people are insane. Personally, I'm just crazy so I don't know if I can support their claims...

I need something Comic Book-y to blog about. Suggestions people, suggestions...

What about the Michael Chabon article on superheroes and comics from the March issue of the New Yorker, entitled Secret Skin: An Essay in Unitard Theory (http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/03/10/080310fa_fact_chabon).

From an article entitled, Sex, Pot and Comic Books (http://www.cannabisculture.com/articles/2012.html).

Popeye the pot-head

According to Harry J Anslinger – director of the US Federal Bureau of Narcotics from 1931 to 1962 – Popeye was a pot head, and that wasn't just spinach going into his pipe!

Popeye was originally created in 1929 by Elzie Segar, as a new character in an already 10-year-old strip called Thimble Theatre. He immediately became America's favourite cartoon character, heralded as single-handedly saving the US spinach industry.

Yet Popeye's use of a pipe to consume the green stuff, and his resulting super-human powers and violent behavior, convinced the paranoid Anslinger that something sly was slinking around behind the scenes. It fit perfectly with Anslinger's delusions about the effects of smoking cannabis. Anslinger believed that "Marijuana is the most violence causing drug in the history of mankind," and in 1937 he testified with these exact words before US Congress, resulting in the United States' first prohibitions against pot.

It may have aroused Anslinger's suspicions that Popeye was also a sailor. Mariners had contact with the mighty marijuana herb since the dawn of sailing, preferring it over all other fibers for making sails and ropes. Sailors were also the original pot pipeline of the British Empire, bringing smokable cannabis to foreign and domestic shores, if for nothing else but their own use. Through cannabis, sailors had a long-standing relationship to the early jazz scene, especially in places like New Zealand, where grass was largely imported from foreign shores in the 20's and 30's.

It's unlikely we will ever find out for sure what was going through Segar's mind when he created the spinach-sucking sailor, but he did have a reputation as a bizarre satirist, and portraying cannabis as spinach would have fit well with his modus operandi.

In 1938, one year after US pot prohibition, the famous jazz band Julia Lee and her Boyfriends recorded The Spinach Song, which was regularly performed in clubs thick with cannabis smoke. The Spinach Song contains lyrics that likely fed Anslinger's suspicions. Especially the chorus "I didn't like it the first time, but oh how it grew on me," and lines like "now somehow I can't get enough." That same year, Elzie Segar, Popeye's creator, suddenly died.

By the time The Spinach Song was released, "spinach" was already a jazz-industry code-word for "cannabis." So it seems likely that Segar intended his readers to know that Popeye the Sailor Man gained his super-human strength from tooting back more than just a mere garden vegetable.

Maybe it isn't unruly, so much as we've just never had this before. The front page generall consists of Netflix, Movie, Videogame, TV, General, Trades threads. Now we've got a lot of extras. I don't mind it just seems so foreign.

Yeah, I tend to just check those threads, if it's a good topic I'll post and keep it going, if not I just hope it dies and stops cluttering the main page

Oh, clutter. Yeah, the iFanboy shirts, introduction and rules threads don't need to be pinned.

However, the POW, video show, minis and the recco threads should stay pinned. Those see a lot of traffic. The recco thread actually cuts down on the clutter.

Glad the Netflix thread was un-stickied.

That we're getting some weird threads? Or that we're starting to argue too much in the different threads?

I meant getting a lot more threads. When I said unruly, I didn't mean it as a bad thing. I jsut meant branching off from our typical "The [BLANK] Thread". It's odd. We all seem to be getting along, and some of the new threads have made for fun topics. Wasn't trying to complain, just noticing the trend.

I'm probably responsible for at least some of the unwieldiness of the board and threads. After all, I did post several new threads yesterday - particularly the one about Popeye being a pot head (which was later folded into this thread).

On a whole other topic, I was in a car wreck today. Mostly a big fender bender. No one was hurt. But the other guy probably has a couple of thousand in repairs. Fortunately, I have good insurance. I hate accidents. Bummer.

I think it was more of a bad statement on my end. So far everyone who has replied has interpretted it to mean something different. Oops.

You have the strangest way of revising your own history. I'm not trying to be a dick about it, but it's funny.

"When I said "is" I didn't mean..."is". I meant "helicopter."

You do it all the time.

Unruly has a negative connotation.

Unruly has a negative connotation.Let me try putting it this way...

You have a garden. It's a small box just off the side of your house. Flowers grow in it, year round. One day you walk outside and see that the flowers have trailed out of the garden, and across your lawn. You still love flowers, but you can't help notice they aren't where they used to be. By definition, those flowers are being unruly.

Unruly (Adjective) - not submissive or conforming to rule

I guess it isn't so much a "rule" but we have always seemed to keep threads fairly contained within there own groups. Comics, movies, TVs, etc. Right now they don't seem to be doing that way. Rosa Parks was unruly, but I don't mean it in a negative way.

If I was revising my own history I probably wouldn't be saying the exact same thing I said here:Maybe it isn't unruly, so much as we've just never had this before. I promise the next person who hits me will rue the day!! The last accident I was in has made me very angry and I am saving all of my anger for the next person who comes along. Hopefully there will be no next person and then this force will be contained. If there is, it might make the evening new or at least youtube from a camera phone or police dash cam!

Once I get a chance to read that, I believe I might. I've kind of wanted to talk about the "essence of a superhero" or something along those lines for a while. Instead, I think I may go with a little ditty on supporting casts before I do anything else. Have to wait til tomorrow though, reviews need done tonight. :(
