View Full Version : What Are You Going To Buy With Your Tax Refund?

Assuming that we are all getting refunds on our state and federal taxes due this week, what are you going to spend the loot on? Comics? Graphic novels or trades? Hardcovers?

At least part of my refund is going toward the new Iron Man Omnibus that comes out this month.

It's going back into my bank account after buying a new drum set (http://i32.tinypic.com/2lsa1pz.jpg) recently.

Edit: And I bought a Sound Mixer (http://i30.tinypic.com/rua8ia.jpg).

Edit2: And a couple of pairs (http://tinyurl.com/6nun95) of shoes (http://tinyurl.com/5s6f37) for my girl.

Edit3: I have no impulse control.

HAHA first year doing my own taxes...it wasn't fun. Probably won't make the same mistake next year.

Anyhow, not a big refund this year, but oh well. I got my vacation pay and profit sharing checks from work last week so that has gone mostly to paying off my credit card debt. As for my actualy tax refund when that comes in...I might put it towards the MGS4 PS3 bundle or the desktop PC I'm going to be building this summer...probably no comics.

Disclaimer: I really don't mean to brag with this post, but it's been far too long since I've been in a position to spend money on myself and I'll be damned if I don't try to make the best of it.

Most of my tax rebate went into a security deposit for my new shag pad, but I spent some on Amazon and e-bay. I got:

Captain America: The classic Years (Golden Age) Vol. 1-2 hardcovers w/slip case
Essential Spider-Man vol. 3-4
Fell vol. 1
Powers vol. 2-3
Batman: The man who laughs Hardcover

Got a loan with my Thrift Savings to pay off credit cards and will have enough left over for:

42" Vizio LCD 1080p HDTV
refurbished 80gb PS3
Rock Band

and with my tax relief check in May I'll be getting a new tuner to round out my entertainment center because my old one barely works anymore.

Whatever I have left over from all this is going into my savings for a rainy day. Promise. :D

That was me, last year. When I first did the taxes I came up with a pretty hefty refund. Then I was given a second earnings statement from the "Gifts and Prizes" I had won earlier in the year. After I factored that in, I owed. Hated that!

It's going towards my new car. Probably a Honda Fit.
Nice choice.

Hurts to pay, I know, but I find it helps to realize that most people with huge refunds are just cheating themselves out of money that they could have had sooner. Basically, they're just giving the government a little interest free loan out of each paycheck, that they can only get repaid on by filing a return.

You're implying that all people have a huge say in how their company's take out their taxes. I know of a few company's that have HORRIBLE accounting departments.
A friend of mine found out for some reason that she was listed as having 3 kids. She was 21 with no kids. She ended up owing the Government a hefty chunk.

Um, I wasn't implying anything of the sort (or at least it wasn't intended). I was just saying that this is an alternate way of looking at what it is to pay taxes/receive a refund that might make paying seem a little less painful.

Regardless, I will say that, yes, the vast majority of people have a large degree of control over their withholding. Are mistakes sometimes made? Of course. Is it common? I'd say no, based solely on my own personal experience. Plus, that's the kind of error that you can catch if you pay attention to your paystub.

I'm in total agreement that it's catchable. Sadly, in my experience people see the word Taxes, and rather then arguing they just except whatever amount they're told.

Edit: Enclosures are $13-20 bucks!

Not exactly with my tax refund money, but I plan on going to the bank tomorrow to use both my vacation pay check from work, and profit sharing check (also from work) to completely wipe out what's left to pay on my credit card. I'm excited!

However, that won't wipe out my student loan debt that is building, but one problem at a time.

Still thinking my tax refund money is going away towards my PS3 fund for that MGS4 bundle.

Well, you're going to need a time machine and a free week to get one of these. Damn the Robot Registration act of 2019! Five or Six replicants run a muck in Los Angels and you have to register everything above a A.I.Q. larger then 40.

What's the point of getting an extension? You have to fill out forms and pay by today anyway.

you usually only have to pay a portion with an extension and it's a lot easier to do then a full return if you have a bazillion K1s, Schedule Cs and Rentals. Those are the people filling out extensions and sending them today. Tonight was awesome at work I took 4 phone calls in two minutes. All of them were, "Can I E-file an Extension in this state." Canned Response, "You can only E-File in four states, which your state is not one of them, NEXT!"
