I'm a New Zealander and I have to admit I am sometimes envious of you North American folks. You see, the largest beer we have generally available are long-necks and we're lucky if those get to 25oz. Sure we have your usual magnums/champagne style bottles of Heineken or a 3 Litre Can of Asahi. But sometimes you don't want to throw down 50 bucks on a bottle of beer.
You just want something large and cheap.
And a 40oz sure does fit that desription.
Now, I'm not a fan of cheap-ass malt liquor. It has a time and a place, to be sure. But I'm curious as to what is the best, readily available 40oz beer. The one I can grab at the local corner store when I'm on the east coast (or in the south).
Your advice will be greatly appreciated!

Stick with the good stuff.

Since everybody is deriding the faithful 40, I'll offer a 40 that might compete with foreign beers...on the alcohol content level.
Steel Reserve.
Funny thing about ol' Steeley, it tastes like ass when it's cold but tastes yummy when it's room temperature or slightly cool. And it boasts an 8.1% alcohol content. Not bad for a generic-american 40 oz. Most 40 oz. taste like ass. So which ass do you want to taste? I usually go for Steel, sometimes OE, sometimes Mickey's. They all taste about the same, except mickey's which is particularly soft and very easy to drink.
But like always, if you want a quality beer you have to buy local breweries. I'm in San Diego so here it's Alesmith, Stone, and Ballast Point. My favorite being Arrogant Bastard Ale and Double Bastard Ale from Stone Brewing Co. If you're in NY, you might be able to find some. Not a true 40, but they come in 22 oz. bottles so it's a decent amount. :)
