Ive never put one together, just did applications.
Im wondering about things like my eduction. Basically i have spent the last 8 or 9 years strictly in computers, but before that i have worked as a mechanic for about 2 or 3 years, spending time getting certified and i went to vo-tech for that too. I also went for carpentry and graduated that vo-tech training. I ran cable for about 2 years at this company before i worked my way up tot he PC department here too.
Should i put that stuff in if im not going for a job not related to them? As a 33 year old does that show i cant stay in one place or that i am versatile. Or is it in how i frame it on the resume thats important.
If anyone is bored and wants to help, i would appreciate it. Thnx.

I think you should. I don't think it's the best idea to list every single job you ever had but all of this seems fine to me. Be sure you spend a lot of time on your cover letter. Really research the company/job you're looking for. Wow them with your cover letter.

Ok, incoming n00b!
Whats a cover letter.
Also, you think i should use a office template or go from scratch ? Right now im using a template i found online, but it even feels weak as im doing it.
Thnx phat.

A buddy of Jobs and Woz put mine together. With no education at all aside from high school, which I technically didn't finish, and only work experience being my own endeavors, using the resume he put together for me helped land me the job I have now.
When do you need a resume? If you can wait for the weekend, I can put something together for you.

I try to keep my resume up to date and under 2 pages.
While it remains fairly generic, in the two times I needed to apply for work, I tweaked the resume for each job I was applying for to emphasise key interests for the job listing. I kept all the extraneous stuff out of the resume (the fluff that many so called "professional resume builders" put in) and included it in a cover letter (that is most likely ignored and thrown away).
Ok. Used to doing everything on my own, with zero help from anyone else. I guess i can try this " help from others thing " i keep hearing about.
that is SO sweet :)
it is easy to do the things that are easy for you for others
so it is all supergood
on the jobs you list:
list the jobs where your impact was siginificant or vice versa
to give them a clear 'image' of who you are
i don't have a resume
i do have a college transcript (thank the powers that be)
but if you tell me what kind of job it is i can give you style advice for the interview :D

Ok i got my adium up and working. Im on AIM network under Litgruv.
Good advice token, thank you. See i didnt even think to find the job tweak it for that job and submit it like that. Seems so simple in retro though.
What kind of job am i looking for? Hmm..
Anything that pays a respectable wage is primary. Maybe its working for myself soon, if i can find a way.
I would like to deal with people a lot less then i do now. For 10 years i have been going into peoples houses and looking at how people live and treat each other and treat me. No respect, mean, you know where im going. Honestly i would like to find a way to work for myself, but im having problems finding a legitimate way to do that, where i can see a sustainable future. So a environment where the people arent mean, where i can take some time to think and be myself instead of having to be a fake person or pushed to frustration so people higher on the food chain can reap the benefits of my life being drained from me, would be just fine.
Im not a cubical dweller though thats for sure.
Im trying to start a new life basically and how its done is not as important as how i live, ya know? So im trying to be pretty open. But for my whole " career " in the workplace, its been about bending my life for the job and i would like to spend the rest of my life working to allow what i do to make a living, help free myself so i can grow as a human being, spiritually, mentally, socially and just learn to be who i am. I been forced to be something im not for so long out of pure survival that i dont even know truly what that is anymore.
Dont know if that was too much info, but at least you know where my head is at and my direction is, for better or worse.

Sounds like you have a really varied work history and not necessarily a lot of focus on one area. I don't think that is a bad thing at all. In some ways my work history sounds the same.
Put everything in. Try to avoid gaps in your work history. Potential employers would rather see an unrelated job than a gap of 6 months. When I'm between jobs I always try to do something like design a web site for someone, or whatever so I can have that as a filler.
One tip I can offer is that when you decide on a type of job you want visit the job boards like monster and career builder to see what keywords recruiters are using in their job postings. Often actual people aren't reading resume submissions but rather they are using software to find the keywords for the skills they want. If you don't have the right words, your resume could get overlooked even if you have the exact skill set.
Cover letters are a good tool, but spend more time on the resume since that's what will really get you in the door.
Good luck with the job search. Think of your resume as a work in progress all the time. :)
