So I got a few life choices to make here. I got to pick a career. Now I'm looking for something in computers or anything thats remotely close to it.

Any fields in mind? Courses I should do?

Ideas?

Why do you have to pick a career?

I'm in computer science right now. Its a good choice, because its broad enough that I can really do whatever I want with the degree after college, but I expect I'll be programming somewhere (I'm cranking some ideas for Rose-esque internet startups though). Basically, just pick something you like to do. I work my ass off in the computer lab day in and day out, but damn if I don't love it, and it doesn't really feel like work, unlike my other classes that I generally loathe.

I was thinking that or computer engineering. Is it really that fun? Cuz i love IT.

i'm 16

Nuff said. Some people have a hard time picking a career in their 20's let alone 16. Theres no need to stress over it now, nothing is written in stone. Find out what you love, let it happen naturally.

When I was 16 I wanted to be a lawyer. Now I want to be a software engineer.

Geez, when I was sixteen I still was entertaining the whole astronaut idea. I don't know though, maybe NASA is hiring....

I'm 18 and still don't know what I want to do.

2 years ago I wanted to become a chef. Last year I wanted to become a paramedic. Now, webdesign and digital design in general.

I wonder what I want in 6 months ;(

Kevin Rose didn't go to college, yet he's rich as hell.

Alex studied computer science, and what is he now? An actor.

Being 16 and knowing right away what you want to do in life is bullshit.
It's either not as fun as you expected or it's hard as fuck.

I'd take a year of before starting college. Apply for various internetships at various companies that are IT related.

This is the situation I am in. I have exams in a month. Depending on the field I want to go into and the results of my exams, I have to choose 3 subjects corresponding with the field I want to get into.

My choices so far are : Maths, Physics and Chem
OR
Maths, Physics and Biology

Now inorder to pursue a field in Computer Science or Computer Engineering I need Maths, Physics and WHATEVER...

What I wanted to know is, whats a good solid, promising field in IT and should I do Computer Science or Computer Engineering?

What I wanted to know is, whats a good solid, promising field in IT and should I do Computer Science or Computer Engineering?Your school system is similar to what mine was. At 16, I finished my School Certificate (minimum level of highschool education) then went onto years 11-12. At that point we needed to pick some specialisation. At a minimum, we had to have a math level, a science subject, a humanities subject and a phys.ed (these last two for only 12 months).

My choices were 3U (3 Unit) Maths, Physics, Chemistry, 2U English, 1U General Studies (the most basic of humanities subjects - I just didn't care), PE, Engineering Science. The courses were pretty much the equiv of 1st year college courses in the US (which is why Australians do not take gen ed courses at college level - we got that in high school). Notice there is no Comp Science in that list?

The classes I took were setting me up for a career in Engineering or Physical Sciences. To be honest, I wanted to go into Engineering - either as a materials engineer (I was this >< close to going into RAAF as an aeronautical engineer) - in my final year I picked up an extra unit of Engineering Science. It turns out that I went into Computer Science (Software Engineering - and there is a huge difference between someone trained as a Software Engineer and someone trained as a Computer Programmer), and not a physical engineering discipline (and I'll include Computer Engineering - ie chip design and electronics in that).

But, the key thing here was mathematics, problem solving, and analysis. That pretty much sets you up for anything in the "hard" sciences. I had friends that wanted to go into medical areas, so they swung towards chem and bio course, and others that were targetting legal and accounting - so they did more humanities like economics.

You don't need to know what you wanted to do when you left high school. You just had to think about it enough that you knew which direction you were going so that you would get into university.

I will say don't ignore a formal English class though. I could have done the basic English class, but I took the classic English class - which was more analytical, had us reading Shakespeare, English lit, poets, etc. Don't ignore them - they teach critical thinking and analytical writing, both of which are vital skills at university (and become increasingly important as you progress in your career).

What do I do now? I have over 20 years full time experience in the IT industry - as a software engineer, a project manager, and now as a solutions architect. In that time I have only worked for 3 organisations - a global conglomerate with 65,000 employees, a startup with 6 employees, and now with a software company of 350.

Sixteen is too young to be picking a career. That's half-ass incompetent guidance counselor bullshit. You're no more qualified to pick a career right now as getting married or starting a family. Shit, you're not even doing growing yet. That is, your not the person your going to be for the rest of your life. You should spend this time exploring your interests and see what your talents are. If you're good at something and you love doing it, a career will follow. Making a life plan now is pointless. Maybe, just make a plan until your 20.

I'm taking an undeclared year in college. The courses I've signed up for are transferable to an education degree (what I want to do now) but I'm setting myself up to go wherever I decide next year. Realistically, I have my foot in the door, and my high school classes aren't going to matter as much when I ask for a transfer next year.
