Marty, I love your show, am a big fan of Obama, AND I hail from small town America. That being the case, I completely agreed with everything Obama said in San Francisco. Unfortunately it wasn't WHAT he said, but the WAY in which the words were TWISTED that upset most of my kin. It isn't that he claimed such people cling to guns (or whatever) out of bitterness, its that Obama was portrayed as looking down on those that do. It would be like me saying people in San Francisco cling to homosexuality out of bitterness toward irrational conservatism. In both cases, a community is replacing a more ambitious issue (fixing the economy) with a relatively mundane one (same-sex marriage, or Firearm licenses).
Now, my previous statement makes it look like I hold myself above those who practice or condone homosexuality. Nothing is further from the truth! However, you can begin to see how such a paraphrased, blanket statement would alienate me from various communities in San Francisco. My point is that your rant in episode 41 portrays the twisted version of Obama (right though he may be), instead of the literal version of Obama (who actually chose his words rather well and non-discriminatory). I know your show is a comedy not meant to be taken seriously, but I highly doubt you intended to cast Obama in a negative light. And yet, I feel like this episode does so for the same viewers who were originally offended. I'm sure small town, gun-totin', God-fearin' folks aren't a huge part of your audience, but every viewer counts. And every votes gotta count if America stands a chance of voting in our first black president.
Sincerely, Nathan79
