As far as I can tell, he has pretty much single-handedly turned Rev3 into a professional broadcaster - and he's not half bad in front of the camera either.

Thanks drandolph.

Wow, When I heard it on this week's Systm I actually had a tear in my eye! I think that David is one of the main reasons Revision3 is what they are today. Anyone remember the fantastic tour he gave of the new studio? He will be missed, but good luck to him for whatever he does next.

On the side, did anyone think when Patrick first started talking something horrible had happened to David? I was *Knock on wood* thinking Patrick was going to say David was involved in some horrible accident or something. :o

Seems like a big game of multi-company musical chairs going on for the last few months. Patrick and Roger leaving DL.TV for Rev3, Jessica leaving Rev3 for wherever she went, Veronica leaving Mahalo for Rev3, now Dave leaving... and these are just the shows *I* watch... awful lot of job changes going on.

Is the grass really greener on the other side?

masherscf

Dave accomplished something tremendous at Revision3. It stands to reason that his skills would be in high demand. I don't think his leaving reflects at all on Revision3.

You are the new Revision3. Period.

You took it from tripods in Alex's kitchen to serious production value. I can tell that when Dave talks, CEOs-on-down listen.

"dumbed down"? Its not like this is the most intelligent show on the web, i mean 90% of the stuff they do on here takes 25 tries before they get it right, or is just read from extremely well documented things other people have already done. Its a fine show, but geez dont go putting it on a pedestal like its some amazing source of knowledge.

Seriously, we don't know if Dave got fed up with Rev3, Rev3 got fed up with Dave? Maybe Dave burned out and needs time off? Maybe another firm saw Dave's work and offered him a package that Revision3 couldn't match. Maybe the next studio Dave builds he will have a staff to do the work while Dave oversees the build?

Dave. You are the man. We will miss you. I can't believe you are leaving after everything you did and had to go through to build Rev3 to be what it is and will be.

Will you let us know what you are doing for sure?

I don't understand, you built that studio with your bare hands and you still had stuff to build. Like the sound patcher and stuff you said that you built a lot of things to be forwards compatible.

I wish you luck to all the things you do. You are the best at what you do and I know you will continue to do great things. I just wish you could stay with Rev3.

There are a lot of things that I have been noticing in the last several episodes of everything. Things don't make sense to me and a few things are suspicious...

I hope you are leaving on YOUR terms... not someone else's.

No offence to Patrick, but I really hope the show doesn't take a nosedive now. Dave have always been the one with the interesting electronic hacks which are really at the heart of what Systm is about IMO. Rev3 is the house that Dave built...literally.

Somehow, he spent very long hours at the studio, making sure everything went well, and STILL had time to build a sweet MAME cabinet.

I hope this wasn't a case of "overworked/underpaid", although I doubt JLou is like that. If he was, he wouldn't have all of Rev3's staff working with him again.

Good luck, Dave!! Wherever you are!

I can't believe he would leave unless the offer was pretty tempting.I know. Considering in a PM he sent to me once he told me he took a massive pay cut to go to REV3, but he said he REALLY wanted to be there. It almost makes me feel like after he practically built everything he opened his hand, and REV3 just gave him a high five.

This seems weird and unexpected. Patrick seemed "off" in the latest episode of Systm - he had his kid with him, didn't look like he'd shaved (he always looks clean shaven!) and just looked differently. Maybe Dave was scheduled to be hosting the latest Systm episode and he backed out - or whatever happened - at the last minute.

Also - something I just noticed. The show was recorded around 8:30pm judging from the time on the computer they were overclocking. Seems a bit late.

Well, Dave actually went into this job knowing that it was all about the passion for the trade. His usual stay at any position is about a year or so and with Rev3 being a start up, his stay was right on par. There is definitely no hard feelings at all and everyone at Rev3 acknowledges that Dave was literally the hardest working employee with the company. It is going to be a sad Friday this week when Dave leaves.

Also, don't knock Systm yet, because Pat is a freakin wizard at what he does and there was a reason why Dave and Pat co-hosted the show. They both have a whole lot to teach.

eh yeah good luck to david randolf - also hope to see him pop in the show every now & then for 'tips' and stuff like that.
Show ill change no doubt but it already had started to anyway.

Still would prefer longer, larger scale projects like the mame cabinet. I know this requires funds but it would make the show more interesting, increasing the audience, and thus justify the extra funds.. wouldnt it ?..

IMO systm hasnt followed the evolution most rev3 shows have enjoyed, in fact, it almost seems to stagnate if not deteriorate.

problem with that is many viewers want something they can build themselves, and most people can't build a mame cab. Personally I like seeing such projects, even if I can't build one, I can aspire. It seems though that people want smaller, more managable systm projects that you can do with a few spare things you probably already have... (like the wifi antenna one)

Best of luck David Randolph. Even a brief indirect observation of your extensive run of work done at Revision3 shows a job accomplished and successful in almost all imaginable varieties of responsibilities in a media production house, both behind and in front of the camera. I wish you the best of luck in your future prospects.

problem with that is many viewers want something they can build themselves, and most people can't build a mame cab.

I don't know if that is entirely true. MAKE magazine has a well known syndrome where for every project someone actually implements there are dozens he just observes. And its not surprising, in all of science and applied sciences down to arts one SHOULD observe more than he does. Just like in politics or philosophy one should listen more than he speaks. I would agree that the projects, however, should at least be feasible, even if not practical, for the demographic to do.(IE, don't build 5 MW lasers from bare components :) )

Thank you everyone for all your well wishes and support. I will be joining a company that sales/installs/trains on broadcast/effects/presentation equipment for high end clients. The clients are very secretive and usually don't make public that they are working with anyone so the company and clients have asked that I not say who they are in public.

The reason for leaving Revision3 is because of differing opinions on how certain aspects of the company should be handled. Depending on how you read it you can extract if it is a huge problem or a small one. But let me assure you I have a extensive background in operations models for entertainment company's and the smallest details always seem more important to me that the bigger ones. So don't read this as me saying there is a huge gaping hole in the infrastructure of Rev3 and thats why I left. It is because of small flaws that I hope they learn from and grow out of.

I still believe in the original vision that Jay/Kevin/Prager had when they first started the company and I think that original idea can grow into a successful business. However the operations side of Rev3 will need to grow and change in order to make what I believe the vision is come true.

In fact I have wagers with people in the company as to if I am right or not and as weird as it seems, I hope I'm wrong. Maybe it is my version which is the wrong operations model and I can't grasp their ideas.
I will still be stopping by the forums and might even do a few episodes of systm from time to time.

After 5pm today though I am allowed to come in the forums and bash the shows finally. :D
(Actually I can't Patrick knows where I live and has threaten the rough me up and trust me he could.)

As a guy who owns and runs his own business, I know from experience that when several super talented people get into the same room, sometimes it just doesn't work out.

Best of luck in your new venture!

Does that mean Rev3 is now accepting applications?

Seriously though. Thanks for everything you've given us, Dave. Systm isn't the same show without your classic electronics hacks. I don't think anyone will ever be able to live up to some of your projects like "Digg the Digg Button" (ep 10) or "Crane Game" (ep 8)

I can't imagine that this is any easier for Patrick. Maybe Patrick can get someone like Limor Fried (http://ladyada.net) to teach him the trade and return systm to it's roots. I just can't handle any more episodes about air cannons, laptop painting, or overclocking your PC.

Good luck to Patrick, Revision3, and especially Dave.

I think they will be looking for a broadcast engineer with knowledge of networking and servers, facilities design and installation. Hosting a show would be considered an extra.

Stay in touch though and add me around the net. If a client will let me I'll be posting about that.

I know the feeling Dave. Us lowley tech people are always put down by the higher ups. Not listening to our advice and it always ends up biting them in the ass. I wish you all the best.

P.S. It never gets old saying I told you so.

Si... Dave shot Systm 48 with us on Wednesday and Friday was his last day. He showed up on TWiT 140 (http://twit.tv/140) on Sunday, and started his new gig today.

He'll definately be missed: he's an amazing maker!

I wanted to come out to the Maker Faire so freaking bad this year, but I live in Okinawa Japan and I couldn't justify the $2,000 airfare. I managed to get to the show in Austin last year and it was amazing. But it would be so much more amazing to be there with all of you.

Oh well, maybe next year. (I am planning to make the trip to Austin in October again... Rev3 folks should make that trip too ;)

In other words, you haven't really left Systm. You're just "on assignment" again. http://www.bakercountyonline.com/md-2389/icon_laugh.gif :D

Good luck at the new job!

I enjoyed the shows he did, he seemed more like an engineer, than a TV/Web2.0 guy, which is what I really liked....I think the shows were better off for him being there.

I definitely will miss his episodes!

Systm is often shot late at night. There is no conspiracy here.. :)

-chuckles-

The real conspiracy is who are these companies that don't want to be named.

The real conspiracy is who are these companies that don't want to be named.

The real irony is that in asking not to be identified, the company has brought about 100-times more attention on themselves.
