MARCH 2008 SALES CHARTS & MARKET SHARE REPORT

Diamond released their monthly Direct Market Sales Charts and Market Share report Monday, this month for titles that went on sale in March 2008, and the debut of Stephen King's second Dark Tower limited series helped Marvel stay on top of the comic book sales chart, as well as build upon its leads in the Market Share categories over last month.

As mentioned Dark Tower: The Long Road Home was the bestselling comic book of the month, followed by four other Marvel titles making up the Top 5, broken up only by Dark Horse's seemingly still-growing Buffy the Vampire Slayer #12. DC's first charter - Justice League of America #19 followed in the #7 slot.

DC took the top 2 spots on March's graphic novel chart, with the new Batman: The Killing Joke Special Edition Hardcover coming in at #1, nearly doubling the unit sales of the #2 charter, Fables: 1001 Nights of Snowfall Softcover, a notewothy feat considering the sales the 20+ year-old story has racked up in is various incarnations and reprints over the last two decades.

As to Marvel Share, Marvel held serve and is up a break over last month. They accounted for 43.53% of Unit sales in March, as compared to 32.45% for DC, and 38.70% in Dollar share, compared to 29.98% for DC.

And while only slightly, many of the smaller publishers, like Dark Horse, Image, and IDW showed slight Market Share increases over February, although that pattern will be interesting to follow when both Marvel and DC's big summer events get going at the same time.

Look for more in-depth analysis of the monthly sales charts right here very soon...

So... what do you think? Any surprises?

* Surprised that Stephen King's Dark Tower was the top book of the month.

* Not surprised that New Avengers was #2.

* Very surprised that Thor was #3. It's good, but is it THAT good?

* Really can't believe that X-Force was #12, coming in just above even Captain America. One of the worst books being printed.

* Surprised that the Ultimate Spider-Man was all the way down at #27.

* Surprised that Stephen King's Dark Tower was the top book of the month.

Yeah, this really doesn't surprise me at all. I imagine that there are a LOT of people out there who were huge fans of the series, heard there was a comic being made, and figured "What the hell." I can only hope that some of these people give a few other books a try while they're slumming in the comics world. I don't know, but I would hope that Marvel is advertising the shit out of the Icon line inside of the Dark Tower books.

* Really can't believe that X-Force was #12, coming in just above even Captain America. One of the worst books being printed.

Just goes to show that a lot of fanboys (in the negative sense of the word) are sheep.

That's way down from its number one slot last month...

My most surprising/awesome thing? Buffy #12 outshipping every other DC book... That's freakin awesome....

Think this is the first time in a while I've seen Watchmen get that far down the GN list.

* Very surprised that Thor was #3. It's good, but is it THAT good?

Remember, you can't judge the sales charts by actual quality. You'd shoot yourself in the head from trying to justify some of these. I honestly have no idea how Thor is still that high. I actually wasn't surprised the first couple sold as well as they did. People were actually clamoring for the character after all the CIVIL WAR nonsense and the preview of him kicking the shit out of Iron Man right off the bat got people hyped. But now, I don't know how it hasn't slipped to about the mid-teens. I mean, it's alright. Definitely above average, but I guess it really does have an audience.

Thing is, when a book like say, X-FORCE tops out to start and starts declining it's probably from everyone finally realizing "Fuck me, I've seen this before, and it's still bad" and they slowly start to drop it. But honestly, who was ever reading THOR? That book was always as niche as they come. And now, all the hype and whatnot leading into it, now that people are finally reading it they're like "Wow, I've never really read stuff like this before" because honestly, the typical comic book reader really probably hasn't. So it's kind of a special treat to them to go along with their Tie-in books, and Avenegers titles and JLA and whatnot.

At least, that's how I just dissected it all in my brain just now. :D

I'm surprised that Countdown is that high. Impressed by Green Lantern's strong showing. Shocked by Thor. Disappointed that Flash has fallen so far. Happy that Serenity did so well.

I'm surprised that Countdown is that high.

Countdown has remained remarkably steady, sales-wise. For all the bitching and moaning people did, they still bought it. It's the way of the comic book reader. A big financial boon for DC.

Don't know how reliable it is, but here's what wiki says
Sales of Countdown began with issue #51 selling 91,054 orders from Diamond Comics Distributors, making it the nineteenth best selling comic book in May 2007.[74] After the first issue, sales steadily dropped to a low of 72,077 copies with issue #40.[75] Sales of subsequent issues briefly jumped to a high of approximately 88,000 copies per issue, before gradually declining into their current 67,000 range.[76][77][78]

Countdown has remained remarkably steady, sales-wise. For all the bitching and moaning people did, they still bought it. It's the way of the comic book reader. A big financial boon for DC.

I just wrote an article on this! :D

Yeah, I know no one cares, but I still have to try.

@Jon_Samuelson

I agree; I have had several people who don't read comics approach and talk about the Dark Tower.

Yeah, which is why you creators are wise to ignore message boards. It's all about the numbers.

There's no reason not to do another weekly next year!

While I agree that what people buy is more important than what the general internet buzz is, I can't help but feel that the lackluster critical response (by readers) to Countdown may make them a little gunshy for upcoming weekly comics.

Yeah, well it got screwed up somehow, and I figured that the Twitter-ism was less embarrassing than having code show. So lemme alone. :)
